{How To} S.O.A.P.
Im proud of you.
I really am I want YOU to know that.
Im proud of you for making the commitment to be in Gods Word..to
be reading it each day and applying it to YOUR lifethe beautiful life
our Lord has given YOU.
Each session I create a study guide that goes along with the verses we are
reading, this study guide is to help you interact with Gods Word and learn
to dig deeper. slowing down to really read what God is saying to you that
day.
Before we get started, I want to take the time and explain what the
S.O.A.P. method is and WHY you should use it during your quiet time.
Why S.O.A.P. it?
Its one thing to simply read scripture, but when you interact with it, when
you learn to slow down to REALLY read it, suddenly words start popping
off the page. By SOAPing your verses you are able to dig deeper into
scripture and see more than if you simply read the verses and then went on
your merry way. Let me encourage you to take the time to S.O.A.P. the daily
verses and see for yourself how much more you get out of your daily
readingyoull be amazed.
What does S.O.A.P. mean?
S- The S stands for Scripture- you physically write out the scriptureyoull
be amazed at what God will reveal to you just by taking the time to slow
down and write out what you are reading!
O- The O stands for observation- what do you see in the verses that youre
reading. Who is the audience? Is there a repetition of words? What words
stand out to you?
A- The A stands for Application- this is when Gods Word becomes
personal. What is God saying to me today? How can I apply what I just read
to my own personal life? What changes do I need to make? Is there an action
that I need to take?
S

P- And finally P stands for Prayer. Pray Gods Word back to Him. If He has
revealed something to you during this time in His Word, pray about it.
Confess if He has revealed some sin that is in your life.
Studying Gods Word like this can take as little or as long as you have
time to give. Some days it can take just 10 or 15 minutes, other days
longer.
How do I S.O.A.P.?
Here is my personal example.
Colossians 1:5-8
S- The faith and love that spring from the hope that is stored up for you in
heaven and that you have already heard about in the word of truth, the
gospel that has come to you. All over the world this gospel is bearing fruit
and growing, just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it
and understood Gods grace in all its truth. You learned it from Epaphras,
our dear fellow servant, who is a faithful minister of Christ on our behalf,
and who also told us of your love in the Spirit.
O- (Many times I just bullet my observationswhat Im seeing at first
glance when looking at the verses)
When you combine faith and love, you get hope.
We have to remember that our hope is in heaven.it is yet to
come.
The gospel is the word of truth.
The gospel is continually bearing fruit and growing from the 1st day
to the last.
It just takes one person to change a whole community..Epaphras.
A-Something that stood out to me today was how God used one man,
Epaphras to change a whole town!!! I was reminded that we are simply
called to tell others about Christits Gods job to spread the gospel.to
grow it and have it bear fruit. I felt todays verses were almost directly
spoken to GMG..all over the world this gospel is bearing fruit and
growing, just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and
understood Gods grace in all its truth. Isnt it fun when Gods Word
becomes so alive and speaks directly where we are at?!!!! My prayer today
is that all the women involved in this Bible study will understand Gods
grace and have a thirst for His Word.
6
A quote from my Bible commentary that I wrote in my study guide:
Gods Word is not just for our information, it for our transformation.
P- Dear Lord, please help me to be a Epapras..to tell others about you
and then leave the results in your loving hands. Please help me to understand
and apply what I have read today to my life personally thereby becoming
more and more like you each and every day. Help me to live a life that bears
the fruit of faith and love.anchoring my hope in heaven, not here on
earth. Help me to remember that the BEST is yet to come!
_____________________________________________________________
I hope this explanation helps you today as you learn to dig deeper into Gods
Word.
Ill be honest with you and say there are many days I write on the front and
back side of my study guide..but you dont have to. Just take it one day at
a time, and write as you respond to what God has shown you through His
Word.
The most important ingredients in the S.O.A.P. method is YOUR
interaction with Gods Word and your APPLICATION of His Word to
YOUR life.
Remembei the point is to fully meuitate anu take in each anu eveiy
woiu in the passage foi the uay.

{Week 1}- Hope Bevotional
We live in a uay wheie people aie seaiching foi hope in theii lives.
Some tuin to money, thinking possessions like having the iight house,
iight cai, iight clothes oi laige bank account will give them the hope,
peace anu stability they aie seeking. Some tuin to politicians with theii
piomises of hope anu a bettei life only to be latei uisappointeu in the
outcome. While otheis seek ielationships oi uiugs to fulfill the voiu that
uou's hope offeis. What they uon't iealize is hope is heie.
0ui hope came wiappeu in swauuling clothes anu was placeu in a
mangei that veiy fiist Chiistmas. The Chiistmas stoiy is moie than just
a stoiy about the biith of a chilu into oui woilu, but about the biith of
the woilu's Savioi, the biith of hope enteiing oui woilu that long
awaiteu night so many thousanu of yeais ago.
What was uou's gift to us that veiy fiist Chiistmas. The gift of Bis
piecious Son..oui Reueemei...oui Savioi....oui hope foi a bettei
tomoiiow. uou gave the hopeless woilu the gift of hope that fiist
Chiistmas...anu Be continues to eveiy yeai aftei.
Looking at the stoiy of Chiist's biith we see hope came even when oui
woilu wasn't peifect, anu it still uoes. Even when things uon't seem to
be going oui way..the gift of hope, that only Chiist can offei, is still
heie.
Take a peak with me at the night oui sweet Loiu was boin. What uo you
see. A husbanu anu his young wife, nine months piegnant anu about to
have a baby, both of them tiieu fiom tiaveling late into the night. Pooi
Naiy anu }oseph..nothing seemeu to be going theii way. Tiaveling nine
months piegnant I'm suie wasn't on Naiy's list of things to uo befoie

stable with "no wheie to lay Bis heau"..not exactly what she hau
envisioneu eithei when the angel appeaieu to hei that special night nine

Naiy's life was messy.
But uou loves to uo Bis gieatest miiacles in the miuule of oui messes,
anu that's exactly what Be uiu that special night thousanus of yeais ago.

Hope came into oui woilu!
Hope...that uou can still use this bioken life anu make something

{Week 2}- Love Bevotional
I love Chiistmas. It always takes me back to my chiluhoou in ueimany. I
can still envision uowntown Fiankfuit uecoiateu with lights anu
Chiistmas tiees, the smell of ioasteu almonus anu chestnuts, anu the
sight of gigantic gingeibieau cookies in the shape of heaits biightly
uecoiateu with uiffeient coloieu fiosting. I iemembei walking home
fiom the Chiistmas maiket feeling the snow lightly falling on the quiet
stieets of Fiankfuit. All of this somehow intensifieu the sense of peace
anu awe that came as I anticipateu the most impoitant biithuay of all
times; when we celebiateu uou Bimself becoming man. This was, in a
ieal sense, the biith of love.

This baby that we sing about came foi a veiy specific, uaik anu yet
beautiful, ieason. Be was boin to uie. Be who was holy came to save the
soileu anu sinful. Be who woulu live a peifect life uiu so foi those who
can not take one bieath without sinning.

While the celebiation of Chiistmas ieally is the celebiation of the most
impoitant biithuay to evei happen, oui focus shoulu not stop at the cute
little baby in the managei. We neeu to always keep the cioss in oui
minu because this is wheie uou's gieatest act of love unfolueu.

uou's heait was so oveiwhelmingly filleu with love foi us, Bis people,
that Be chose to become like those Be cieateu, a neeuy baby completely
uepenuent on sinful humans to caie foi anu iaise Bim. As Be giew into a
peifectly kinu anu compassionate man Be woulu face the ugliness of
betiayal, loneliness, suffeiing anu pain in oiuei to iescue a people who
uiun't even caie. This is love.

Bis love continues beyonu the cioss. In Bis love Be puisues us with a
tenuei passion not founu in this woilu. Be gives us new heaits anu new
uesiies. Be nevei leaves us alone. Be comfoits us when we neeu it most,
18

Be heais oui piayeis, Be causes us to giow in gouliness anu woiks all
things foi oui goou (Rom 8). All of this ieflects Bis eveilasting love.

But we can't even stop heie. Who Chiist is anu what Be has uone foi us
shoulu cause us to act. We neeu to be geneious to those aiounu us
because uou is geneious to us. We must show compassion to those who
aie suffeiing (even if it is at theii own hanus) because Chiist is
compassionate towaius us. We must finu ways to love the unlovely anu
to caie foi the neeuy because when we uo this foi otheis we aie
fulfilling the law anu pointing to Chiist.

Beloveu, let us love one anothei, foi love is fiom uou, anu whoevei
loves has been boin of uou anu knows uou. (1 }ohn 4:7 )

Auvent is a gieat time foi intiospection. To look back on all the things
that uou has uone in anu thiough us. It is also a time to look foi
oppoitunities foi us to shaie this uivine anu awesome love of uou with
otheis. But such intiospection will only beai fiuit as it stems fiom oui

Looking to }esus,

{Week S}- Joy Bevotional

When they saw the star they were overjoyed.
On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary and
they bowed down and worshipped him.

Every year our family piles into the car to drive around looking at
Christmas lights. Before we leave the house I have the children color a few
pictures of baby Jesus. Then I write a little note on the picture and have the
kids sign it. As we drive by the houses, we look for nativity scenes. We
have to search hard because nativities are not a frequent sight! But when we
find one oh the excitement! The kids clap and cheer as they anticipate
putting their picture in the newspaper box with the note that says, "thank you
for displaying our first love - Jesus!"

But on the night that Jesus was born there were no loud claps and cheers.
He was born in a humble stable. In a humble stable, God became flesh.

"The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his
glory, the glory of the One and Only."~ John 1:14

Think about the word "flesh" - my children regularly have boo boos where
they scrape their flesh - it's their flesh that bleeds.

Immanuel God with us ~Matthew 1:23

This is the real meaning of Christmas. It's not about the holiday ham and
cookies, Christmas lights and decorations, Santa and reindeer, or Barbies
and Legos! It's about Jesus - coming in the flesh - He dwelt among us - that
boggles my brain! And He went from the stable to the cross because of His
love for you and me.

Isn't life sometimes a battle for joy? The reality is life can be hard and joy is
not our natural reaction to the stress of life.

John Piper says "By nature, we get more pleasure from God's gifts than from
Himself."
26

Its tempting to try to find our joy within the celebrations and traditions of
Christmas rather than in God himself. But lets not wait to get our to-do lists
done or to receive the perfect gift from our husband.

Crank up your Christmas music, Girls!

God is with us!!!

Have a Merry Christmas!

Walk with the King!

Peace is leaining to tiust in uou, even in the miust of the chaos. Peace
comes when I set my heait on what's lasting anu tiue, not on tempoiaiy
eaithly things. Peace is having confiuence in a uou who loveu me so
much Be was willing to senu Bis piecious Son to Eaith as helpless babe,
to save a wietcheu sinnei like me. Peace is saying no to the woilu, anu
yes to uou. That is the kinu of peace that I neeu in my life uuiing the
chaos of Chiistmas anu all yeai long!

This holiuay season, I want to intentionally spieau that peace to those
aiounu me. I want otheis to "## }esus in me as I humbly seive. I want
them to '#$% about }esus as I tell the stoiy of Bis biith, anu as I woiship
Bim foi coming to save a bioken woilu. I want them to 0##/ }esus' love
thiough me, as I love with that same patience, compassion anu giace.
No mattei what chaos the woilu thiows my way.
