VDL 4 upgrades

VDL-4 was proposed to allow each vessel to broadcast without data collision.
Communicates with Ground Stations and other aircraft within its locality. VDL4 radios consist of at least 2 receivers and 1 transmitter, the additional receiver being used as a signaling channel to instruct the radio on impending changes. An autonomous management system ensures that even in the most crowded airspace all aircraft can transmit and receive data in a timely manner. While VDL-4 has been designed to meet the demanding applications of ADS-B, it can also be used for air-to-air and air-to-ground communications and, additionally, may be used to up-link data to augment aircraft navigation systems. In theory, it can support the full communication, navigation and surveillance requirements as envisaged by ICAO for future air navigation.

Applications

Controller-pilot data link communications (CPDLC)

CPDLC enables a whole host of control related applications including: ATC clearance, ATC management, Flying Plan contingency Checking, Dynamic Route Availability Botification

Pre-departure Clearance
Similar to CPDLC for semi-automated data link exchange between an aircraft and Control Tower prior to taxing and take-off

Flight Information Services

Ground generated communications that provides time sensitive weather and supporting info to aircraft. FIS-B is expected to support uplink of weather graphics, ATIS and VOLMET. The coverage of FIS-B can be extended thru ground network allowing ATIS info of destination airports.
