2009 Sandalford Prendiville Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

VARIETAL BREAKDOWN - 100% Cabernet Sauvignon REGION - Margaret River VINTAGE 2009 will go down as one of the best ever vintages in Margaret River. The cool and slightly wet conditions during the initial growing season led to some yield losses. However, the summer months were again dry and warm without any overtly hot spells. Classic Indian Summer conditions then prevailed through in to the autumn months giving perfectly ripened and disease-free fruit with some of the most balanced acid profiles ever seen. In a word, superb. WINEMAKERS COMMENTS After crushing and de-stemming the hand-picked Cabernet fruit was inoculated with a selected yeast strain and fermented in small 10 tonne static fermenters. The traditional methods of rack and return and pumping over were employed during fermentation to optimise colour, flavour and tannin extraction from the fermenting must. Nearing the end of ferment the wine was pressed and transferred to oak to complete primary fermentation. On completion of 20 months barrel maturation the best 30 barriques were put aside for Prendiville with the balance going to Estate Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. At the end of barrel maturation the Prendiville was blended, fined and given minimal filtration prior to bottling. Each bottle is individually numbered and comes in a lay-down prestige six-pack. VITICULTURE The Sandalford Estate vineyard in Margaret River is the largest and oldest vineyard in this famed region having been originally planted in 1970. The vineyard is located in the northern sub-region of Margaret River known as Wilyabrup. This sub-region is some 4 degrees Celsius warmer on average than the southern parts of Margaret River. This ensures optimal ripeness and generosity in the wines produced. There are twelve Cabernet Sauvignon blocks on the Estate. Three of these blocks are utilised each year to make the Prendiville and in fact this wine is only made in great vintage years. OAK TREATMENT 20 months in 30% new French oak barriques (and 70% older oak). TASTING NOTES COLOUR - Dark ruby red with an unmistakable cherry hue. NOSE - This wine just oozes both the varietal and regional expressions of Cabernet and Margaret River. Classic leafy red berry fruits with subtle cedar-like oak. PALATE- In days of yore this would have been classified as a fine Claret, such is the elegance and style of this wine. The flavours are of cassis with some rosemary and bay herb characteristics. The oak is beautifully integrated lending cigar box, camphor and chocolate nuances whilst the mouthfeel is one of balance. The finish is soft and long with velvet-like tannins filling in a sense what is a medium bodied wine. Whilst a remarkable wine now, the Prendiville is certainly a wine which will benefit from careful cellar maturation for 15 years or more. A harmless deposit may form in the bottle during this time and decanting is recommended prior to serving. WINE ANALYSIS Alcohol 14.3% TA 6.43g/ l pH 3.69
