Medical applications of Thermography

1.Health cases The distribution of a healthy persons skin temperature is symmetrical. This is particularly true with regardto the head, face and limbs. The location of disease can be diagonised if there is an abnormality in this symmetry. Here wew must take some general conditions. That is, in the case of the chest, the leftside tends to show a slightly higher temperature than the right side. In women, the distributionof veins in the breasts is not symmetrical and so diagnosis of cancer of the breast requires special attention. The breast temperature of a women is normally affected by her menstrual periods. 2.Tumors In the case of benign tumors, difference in temperature with the surrounding tissues is very small, about 1 degree at most. The benign angioma shows a temperature ! degree higher than surrounding tissues to the increased blood flow. "ut lipom and the cystic struma show the low temperatures. In the case of superficial malignant tumors such as cancer of the breast, carcinoma of the thyroid, cancer of the upper #aw etc., a temperature !$% degreee higher than that of the surrounding tissues is noted. 3.Inflammation The area of an acute inflammation also shows a high temperature because of active metabolism and increase in the local blood flow. This makes the differential diagnosis from malignant tumors very difficult. This makes use of the fact that malignant tumors, although easily cooled, soon recover the temperature, while the inflammation is cured by intake of antibiotics, the local temperature drops and the observation of this contributes to a #udgement of therapeutic effects. 4.Disease of peripheral vessels In cases where the arteries are occluded, the blood flow of peripheral vessels either decreases or disappears, resulting a low temperature in that part. In reverse, the arteries venous fistula and vari& increase the local blood flow, showing a high temperature.

5. ones and !erniones In the treatment of burns and perniones, the first thing to do is deciding on their degree of severity. 'here burns are connected, first degree burns register a high temperature due to reactive hyperaemia, but third degree show a temperature !$% degree lower than the normal value because of the absence of blood flow. ". #$in %rafts and &rgan Transplantation The condition of skin rolls or skin grafts after transplantation can be detected by means of the local blood flow. In kidney transplantation, the re#ection causes a high temperature while mal function of the transplanted organ leads to a low temperature. '.(ollagen diseases ollagen disases are usually attended with peripheral vascular disorders. (r. )atsuta discovered abnormally low temperatures in the fingers of patients suffering from *aynauds ayndrome. ).&rthopedic Diseases +ractures, arthritis, bruises and sprains can be easily diagonised because the local skin temperature rises in these cases. *. rain and +ervous diseases ,eningioma tends to show a rise in temperature since it is located very near the cranium. In a patient suffering from hemiplegia following an attack of apople&y, temperature distribution of paralysed e&tremities can be quantitatively diagnosed by means of the thermogram. Immediatelyafter the paralysis, the temperature is farily high, but the chronic condition reduces the temperature -..$ 1degree lower than the normal value. 1,.Harmone diseases Thyroid glands normally register high temperatures due to their active metabolism. If a patient affected with hyper$thyrodism, the site of the struma showsa high temperature, but if a patient suffering from cyst, the corresponding area presents a low temperature.
