1. What are layers & broilers in a poultry farm? 1. Generally, two types of chicken are grown in poultry farming.

They are layers and broilers. The layers are grown only to lay eggs, whereas the broilers are grown for flesh. More or less, both layers and broilers require similar type of equipment and facilities. A broiler is a type of chicken raised specifically for meat production. Modern commercial broilers, typically known as Cornish crosses or Cornish-Rocks are specially bred for large scale, efficient meat production and grow much faster than egg or traditional dual purpose breeds. They are noted for having very fast growth rates, a high feed conversion ratio , and low levels of activity. Broilers often reach a harvest weight of 4-5 pounds dressed in only five weeks. They have white feathers and yellowish skin. This cross is also favorable for meat production because it lacks the typical "hair" which many breeds have that necessitates singeing after plucking. Both male and female broilers are slaughtered for their meat. 2. Do hens lay fertilized eggs? 2. Yes, a hen lays fertilized eggs, but only if it has mated with a rooster. If a hen has not mated with a rooster the egg is not fertilized. Hens lay fertilized eggs only when they have mated with the rooster. In most of the cases in poultry farms, the hens are not allowed to mate with rooster so, the eggs they lay are unfertilized. 3.How can you obtain fertilised and unfertilised eggs? 3. Fertilized eggs are obtained after the hen has mated with the rooster, while unfertilized are obtained without mating. A hen lays eggs irrespective of the presence of a rooster (cock), the eggs are called unfertilized eggs and will never possibly give rise to a baby chick. The eggs are called fertilized eggs when the rooster has mated with the hen and the eggs hatch to give rise to baby chick. 4.Are the eggs that we get in the stores fertilised or unfertilised. 4.The eggs that we get in the stores are unfertilised. The reason that hens lay unfertilized eggs is because in large hen houses where they produce the eggs the hens live their lives in tiny cages placed in rows upon rows of other hens and just sit there for their entire lives laying eggs. They never meet up with a rooster so the egg never gets fertilized. 5. can you consume fertilised eggs? 5. Yes, we can consume both fertilised as well as unfertilised egg. Fertilised egg is more nutritious and contains more amount of yolk as compared to unfertilised egg but it will be quite sticky. There will be some meat and unborn young one in it, like a white disc-like structure on the yolk. This is the developing embryo. Sometimes if the heart and blood vessels have developed you may even see a red spot. 6. Is there any difference in the nutritional value of fertilised and unfertilised eggs? 6. Overall, nutritionally, there are no differences between fertilized and unfertilized eggs.Fertilised egg is more nutritious only in terms of yolk as it contains more amount of yolk as compared to unfertilised egg.
