SMOOTH YOUR MOVE TO 3G

ARE YOU READY FOR THE NEXT STEP?
In todays fast-paced wireless communications arena, perhaps nothing is growing as quickly as your end-users expectations. They want it allvoice and data, business and personal communication, multi-media, entertainment content and Internet accessand they want it everywhere. In short, they want 3G, and to give it to them, you may need to develop new network infrastructure as well as a new set of management skills. UMTS, the 3G system based on Wireless CDMA (W-CDMA) technology, is very different from second generation GSM networks. Its more flexible, has more capabilities and is more complex to manage. To maximize profitability, reduce operating expenses and realize the greatest value from your capital investments, youll have to use new strategies and tools to ensure smooth deployment and ongoing efficient operation. To keep cost of ownership low and revenues high, youll need to learn how to accurately predict the behavior of your network before it is launched, then carefully plan for its continued growth and enhancement. Motorola has the tools and expertise to help you achieve superior business results.

Revenue Generation Increasing ARPU is critical to growing your businessand that means knowing what your customers want, then delivering it. Motorolas UMTS Design Validation Service makes it easy to model the introduction of new applications and services, so you can quickly assess their potential impact on both your networks performance and your business model. For start-up networks, modeling enables rapid build-out for faster cash flow generation and time-to-revenue. Established networks can add new features, while minimizing the service disruption of existing loyal subscribers. Lower Cost of Ownership Success belongs to those who choose solutions that effectively manage their capital and operating expenditures. You want to ramp up profits on current business as efficiently as possible, so you can achieve maximum returns on the minimum investments. Motorolas UMTS Design Validation Service lets you assess the introduction of new applications and features, so you can match the timing of your infrastructure investment to the markets ability to generate returns on those investments. That means significantly lower operator capital/operating expensesand significantly improved profit prospects.. Quality of Service Todays subscribers demand a high quality connection every time they place or receive a call. Motorolas quality of service solutions will help you configure your network to deliver improved voice and data performance across the network, getting the most of every infrastructure investment and often without adding any equipment at all. As you roll out new data services, you can be prepared to minimize the impact on voice call quality, and at the same time, deliver a quality experience to new data users. An optimized network performs betterand subscribers can see the difference. Youll earn higher customer satisfaction and increased customer loyalty, which translates into higher revenue opportunities and increased market share. Capacity and Coverage To deliver system and service capabilities that enable anywhere, anytime access, you need to deploy high quality, stable, well-planned and targeted coverage solutions. Deliver dependable quality and coverage, and you improve customer satisfaction and reduce churn. Motorola not only provides the tools for end-to-end optimization of your network, but also delivers RF planning, performance modeling techniques and analysis methodologies of the complete network that are designed to increase network capacity and coverage.

MOTOROLA LEADS THE WAY

Before you venture into new territory, it makes sense to talk to someone whos been there. Motorola has been a leader in wireless communication from the very beginning. We launched the first commercial CDMA (IS-95) network in Hong Kong in 1995 and have since installed more than 110 networks in 24 countries. Our expertise in GPRS allows us to bring an even deeper understanding of data packet services to UMTS system planning. By far the largest cost component of UMTS network deployment is radio access infrastructure, and thats one arena Motorola understands. Our UMTS Design Services have their foundation in our recognized leadership in Radio Frequency (RF) planning and CDMA deployment. From dimensioning, to planning, to field optimization, we have assembled a suite of activities in one service that offers you best-in-class planning and optimization tools and analysis. Whether or not your network uses Motorola hardware, UMTS Design Services leverage Motorola experience to deploy your 3G solution more intelligently and operate it more efficiently.

REACH YOUR ULTIMATE OBJECTIVES

To gain a sustainable competitive advantage, you not only want a smooth, cost-effective deployment of your UMTS capability, you also want to achieve exceptional levels of performance in daily operation and lay the groundwork for fast, intelligent growth and expansion of services. Motorolas UMTS Design Services can help you meet those objectives. Weve developed tools and methodologies that can help you improve network coverage, capacity and availability, minimize dropped calls, and enhance throughput at every stage of your networks life. Truly optimal network performance will yield a number of benefits to your bottom line, as well.

MOTOROLAS LIFECYCLE SERVICES PORTFOLIO Motorolas Lifecycle Services portfolio addresses each stage of your network growth, from design and deployment, to operations and performance, through evolution. Our approach is founded on deep technical expertise and sharply focused on your unique business objectives and challenges. It delivers cost-effective value that helps you make the most of your investments as you grow your wireless business and strive to deliver the highest quality user experiences. Our UMTS Network Design Validation Services represent a key offering of Motorolas Lifecycle Services portfolio.

The deployment of UTRAN equipment not only includes construction, commissioning and site acquisition, but also testing, validation and optimization. A network validation program should be set up to cover all pre-launch testing and optimization activities. RF planning optimization, cluster testing, as well as early manual optimization (Drive Tests, Call Trace) are included in the planning and optimization activities and are split into phases. Each phase is subject to criteria entry and exit points and, typically, the exit criteria corresponds to target Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). These phases include: Site Planning and Survey: includes RF Planning Activities, Site Verifications, Single-Cell Functionality Testing and Identification of Drive Test Routes Field Optimization: includes Drive Testing and Call Log Analysis System Performance: includes KPI Benchmarking Optimization activities are on-going throughout the process.

INTELLIGENT PLANNING AND OPTIMIZATION

UMTS Network Design Validation is a major step in UMTS network deployment. It ensures that the network is effectively up and running, and that the basic functionality and call stability can be demonstrated. This service applies to on-going deployment as well as to a deployed network thay may be experiencing performance issues. Through clever coordination of planning and field optimization activities, this service will help an operator achieve the best capacity and performance from its network.

SITE PLANNING AND SURVEY

The main task of RF planning is to support the Field Optimization activities of the second phase. The initial task is to get a snapshot of the networks performance to anticipate changes in the RF domain. After Model Tuning, the second task is to optimize the networks offline performance by modifying pilot power, antenna configuration and power levels. The RF planning activities are critical to: Defining the drive test routes Locating problem areas Providing the best configuration for the site (Down Tilt, Antenna Type, Azimuth)

FIELD OPTIMIZATION
The Field Optimization phase is an essential part of UMTS Network Design Validation. The main objective is to improve the RF performances and network stability through fine tuning product parameters. As such, this phase consists of the following tasks: Full RF coverage map (pilot scanner) compared to RF planning prediction Identification of RF coverage holes Identification and elimination of areas with pilot pollution Identification of areas which cause unnecessary cell re-selection pilot dominance problems Cell radius checks Identifying neighbor list deficiencies and optimization of neighbor ranking

SYSTEM PERFORMANCE
The System Performance phase includes all the necessary activities to cover the functional testing of the network under load. At this stage, volume calls and benchmarking are performed to establish the KPIs for the network. The exit criteria for the optimization phase will be specified by these KPIs. Benchmarking and load testing are performed on groups of cells (clusters) with similar radio properties. The System Performance phase is broken down into major test areas which include: Idle Mode Performance Random Access Procedure Optimization Call Establishment Performance Voice Quality (AMR) Data Call Performance Power Control Settings Soft Handover Settings Radio Admission Control (in conjunction with system capacity testing)
