DURIS P 5 Quality of the LED General

The DURIS P 5 is a high quality LED component.
The quality of DURIS P 5 is ensured by a high-quality product design a high-quality production line concept comprehensive inspections and quality tests during production. OSRAM OS is the only LED manufacturer who can offer a mid-power LED which is resistant against corrosion.

Note: The full reliability report is available on request.

OS SSL | II

DURIS P 5 Corrosion Resistance

In a lot of SSL applications LEDs may be exposed to corrosive gases. DURIS P 5 is the mid-power with the best-in-class corrosion resistance.
In SSL applications LEDs can be exposed to corrosive gases (indoor and outdoor luminaires). Today's mid-power LEDs employ a silver reflector. LEDs which have silver reflectors may be especially damaged by those corrosive gases. Luminous flux decreases strongly. DURIS P 5 employs a corrosion resistant leadframe and is the mid-power with the best-inclass corrosion resistance.

Rubber gaskets or adhesives may outgas corrosive gases.

Latin America | Page 41

OS SSL | II

A typical silver reflector SSL LED after a corrosive gas test. The silver is corroded.

DURIS P 5 Quality of the LED Corrosion Resistance

DURIS P 5 is the only SSL mid-power LED worldwide which is resistant against corrosion.
SSL mid-power LEDs from competitors have a silver reflector inside. Silver corrodes in a corrosive gas atmosphere. Then the reflectivity decreases which causes a strong luminous flux decrease of the LED. DURIS P 5 employs a corrosion resistant leadframe and is the midpower with the best-in-class corrosion resistance.
A typical silver reflector SSL LED after a corrosive gas test. The silver is corroded.

DURIS P 5 Why Is A High LED-Quality So Important?

Quality issues increase in the LED world. This will lead to a higher demand for high-quality LEDs in the future.

Next Portfolio Steps First available CCTs will be 3,000 K, 4,000 K and 5,000 K (CRImin > 80) and 6,000 K (CRImin > 60) The availability and timeline of 2,700 K, 3,500 K and 6,000 K (CRImin > 80) is not determined yet. Further options (e. g. CRI > 90) and color portfolio (blue, true green, amber) are under discussion. There is no decision yet.
*) Values refer to a typical forward voltage of Uf = 3.2 V and a forward current of 100 mA. An improvement of the luminous efficacy of more than 10 % is expected till mid 2012.

DURIS P 5 Positioning against Other LEDs

Main Arguments against other mid-power LEDs Best-in class corrosion resistance and long lifetimes At the moment no other mid-power LED seems to be able to offer both the efficacy, the lifetimes and the corrosion resistance compared to DURIS P 5. Corrosion resistance: Feedback from customers First luminaire manufacturers already insist on LEDs which have no silver leadframe inside. Example 1: One of the largest luminaire manufacturer in Asia only accepts corrosion stable mid-power LEDs without silver leadframe for his huge 2012 indoor lighting programme. Example 2: One lighting OEM used LEDs with silver-plated leadframes for his outdoor luminaires. After some time the return rate of the luminaires due to field failures was 1 %. 90 % of the defects were caused by a corroded leadframe.

Improvements implemented in the package

More than just an OSLON package with 2mm chip

2 mm chip in same package doubled lumens out of same package Chip soldering improved thermal resistance (3.8K/W)

Reflective layer higher reflectivity of LED package

Improved CLC Layer improved light extraction and efficacy (+5%)

SECOND BOARD RELIABILITY: Simplified Model of Stress Condition in TC test

Only considering thermal expansion of different materials:
T 25C Al2O3 MCPCB LED

Stress is related to the elongation of parts (CTE) and the stiffness of the materials (Youngs Modulus) The mechanical stress is increased by:

T-40C Al2O3 MCPCB L( Tmin) T125C Al2O3 MCPCB

bigger temperature difference (T). higher maximum temperature (Tmax). larger device dimensions. larger stiffness of materials

Long longer cycle durations is accelerating the crack growth. L( T)
