( Common to Mechatronics and Production Engineering)
Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 80
Answer any FIVE Questions
All Questions carry equal marks
?????

1. (a) Define and explain zeroth law of thermodynamics. [8]

(b) Distinguish between adiabatic and isentropic process. [8]

2. A cylinder fitted with a piston has an initial volume of 0.1m3 and contains nitrogen
at 150kpa, 250 C. The piston is moved to compress the nitrogen until the pressure
is 1 Mpa and the temperature is 1500 C. The work done on the nitrogen is 20kJ.
Determine the amount of heat transfer from the nitrogen. [16]

3. (a) Prove that the change in entropy during a polytropic process is given by
s2 - s1 = Cv (n - γ / n - 1) loge (T2 / T1 )
where γ is ratio of specific heats and n- index of compression or expansion. [8]
(b) A closed system consists of 1kg of air which is initially at 1.5 bar and 670 C.
The volume doubles as the system undergoes a process according to the law
pV 1.2 = Constant. Find the work done, Heat transfer and change in entropy.
[8]

4. (a) Explain : partial molal properties [6]

(b) Define chemical potential and express the same in terms of partial molal
Helmholtz function. [10]

5. (a) Compare the thermal efficiencies of Otto and Diesel cycles the same maximum
temperature and pressure values. [8]
(b) A spark ignition engine has a compression ratio of 8 to 1. assume that the
fuel is equivalent to C8 H18 . The engine uses 0.268kg of fuel per kW-hr. The
mechanical efficiency is 78%. Determine the indicated thermal efficiency. [8]

6. (a) What do understand by vapour pressure of fluid ? What is its practical sig-
nificance? [6]
(b) The velocity distribution near the solid wall at a section is given by u=5 Sin
(5xy). Compute the shear stress at points y = 0 and y=0.1m away from the
boundary. The dynamic viscosity of the fluid is 5 poise. [10]

7. (a) What do you mean by one , two and three dimensional flows ? Give examples
for each type? [8]
(b) The flow of the fluid has the velocity components u = 3x+y and v=2x-3y.
Determine whether or not the flow is irrotational. [8]

8. (a) Differentiate between [8]

ii. Friction drag and pressure drag.
(b) The air is flowing over a cylinder of diameter 10cm and of infinite length with
a velocity of 15 cm/sec. Find the total drag, shear drag, pressure drag on
1m length of the cylinder if the total drag coefficient is 1.5 and shear drag
coefficient is 0.25. The density of air is given as 1.25 kg/m3 . [8]
