Gou reall# need a com!uter to list all the o!erations / have had since m# $irst one be$ore 1955& )his was an a!!endectom#& /t le$t a scar, but reall# le$t me with no unusual !roblems& =ots o$ !eo!le have this o!eration and most !eo!le are hardl# aware that a !art o$ the bod# is missing& ;o it was with me, and / reall# didn t miss not having an a!!endi*& 6ut / ll never $orget m# second one( /n %anuar#, 1955, a truc" ran into the bac" o$ our car causing an in,ur# to m# bac"& A disc in m# s!ine sli!!ed out into the s!inal canal and ru!tured, or herniated& /t was swollen several times its normal si-e and was !ressing on the nerve in m# le$t leg, ma"ing wal"ing ver# !ain$ul& )he !ain $rom the sli!!ed disc went down through m# hi!, through the bac" o$ m# leg and even into m# toes& )he doctors said i$ it was not ta"en care o$ / might not be able to wal" at all& ;urger#, a laminectom# and a s!inal $usion, was !er$ormed in 1a# o$ that #ear& )he# removed the disc, too" bone out o$ the bac" o$ m# right hi! and inserted it into the

'hat is that !ain that "ee!s hitting m# s!ine5 Jrobabl# the weather& Bo, there it goes again, but this time it reall# is ma"ing m# shoulder blade hurt( / wonder i$ there s something wrong with me5 /t couldn t be, or could it5 6# 1960 / was convinced that there was something reall# wrong because the !ain in m# s!ine and shoulder blade area was becoming more and more !ronounced as / !er$ormed m# household tas"s& / went to our $amil# !h#sician and he !rescribed a high3 !otenc# vitamin 6 which / too" $or almost two #ears, but the !ain still continued& /n 1962 it had !rogressed to the !oint where / could not reach u! over m# head with both arms to hang u! clothes& / had alwa#s been a ?scrubberA in m# house, and / loved to wash windows, but washing windows was becoming ver# !ain$ul and while / li"ed to wash them on
