1. (a) Calculate the electric field intensity that will be just sufficient to balance the
gravitational force of an electron. [8M]
(b) Determine the charge that produces an electric field strength of 40 volts per
cm, at a distance of 30cm in vaccum. [8M]
2. (a) What are the matching boundary conditions at the interface between two
dissimilar dielectric media for electric field intensity and electric flux den-
sity?Derive the relations. [8M]
(b) Obtain an expression for the capacitance of unit length of an infinite coaxial
transmission line in terms of the dimensions and ε0 . [8M]
3. Find the magnetic field intensity due to the presence of a finite straight filament
conductor carrying current I using Ampere’s Law for current element: Hence es-
tablish the relations for semi-infinite and infinite wires. [16M]
4. (a) What are the different ways to produce an emf in a conducting loop? [4M]
(b) Let µ = 10−5 H/m, ε = 4 ×10−9 F/m, and σ = 0, and ρv = 0. Find k if the
following pair of fields satisfy Maxwell’s equations.

(c) A current sheet, K = 9ay A/m, is located at z = 0, the interface between
region 1, z < 0, with µr1 = 4, and region 2, z > 0, µr2 = 3. Given that H2 =

5. (a) Starting from the Maxwell’s curl equations, derive the wave equation in Elec-
tric field for free space. [6M]
(b) Given a non-magnetic material having εr = 2.35, σ = 104 mhos/m., find the
loss tangent, attenuation, phase factor and intrinsic impedance at 2.5 MHz.

6. (a) What is the loss tangent of a medium? Derive an expression for the same in
terms of medium constants. [8M]
(b) Compute the phase velocity, attenuation, propagation constant and intrinsic
impedance for a 1 MHz plane wave in a large copper with µr = 1, εr = 1, σ
= 5.87 × 107 mhos/m. [8M]
7. (a) A wave is incident at an arbitrary angle on a perfect conductor. Derive ex-
pressions for reflected fields under parallel polarization. [10M]

(b) Show that the field existing in the second medium under conditions of total
Internal reflections is a non-uniform plane wave and slow wave. [6M]

8. (a) Discuss the significance and applications of Poynting Theorem. [8M]


(b) Explain the utility of Poynting vector. If the peak poynting vector in free
space is 10w/m2 find the amplitudes of electric and magnetic fields. [8M]

1. (a) Show that in an electrostatic field, electric field intensity E and electrostatic
potential V are related as E=−∇V. [8M]
(b) Three equal positive charges are placed at the corners of an equilateral triangle
with a side of ‘d’ meters. Determine the magnitude and direction of the electric
field at the point bisecting each side of the equilateral triangle. [8M]

2. Obtain an expression for the capacitance of a co-axial cylinder of diameters d1 and


d2 and length l.In a concentric cable condenser, the diameter of the inner and outer
cylinders are 3mm and 10mm, respectively. If relative permittivity of the insulator
is 3, find its capacity per meter. [16M]

3. (a) An infinite conductor carries a current of 2A in the Z direction . Find the


magnitude of the force on 1m length of the conductor , if the field in which
the conductor is placed is given as B = ( 0.1 ûx - 0.2 ûy ) Tesla. [12M]
(b) Explain why ∇. B = 0 ? [4M]

4. (a) Given in free space, E = E0 cos (ωt- βz) ax and B = (E0 /η) cos (ωt- βz) ay .
Determine η in terms of ω, µ0 , ε0 so that the fields satisfy all the Maxwell’s
equations. [6M]
(b) State and prove the boundary conditions on the normal component of time
varying D-field at the surface of discontinuity. [6M]
(c) Given H = 300 cos(3 × 108 t -y) az A/m in free space, find the emf developed
in the closed square path having corners at (0, 0, 0), (1, 0, 0), (1, 1, 0), and
(0, 1, 0). [4M]

5. (a) Starting from the general expression for the propagation constant γ in terms
of the medium constants, find the attenuation α and phase factor β. [6M]
(b) A uniform plane wave is propagating through a non-magnetic medium. De-
termine the relative dielectric constant of the medium if [10M]
i. the intrinsic impedance is 220 Ohms
ii. the wavelength at 10 GHz is 1.5 cm.

6. (a) Explain how materials are classified depending on relaxation time. [6M]
(b) A large copper conductor µr = 1, εr = 1, σ = 5.87 × 106 mhos/m. supports
a 50 Hz plane wave . compute α, β, η, λ and phase velocity of propagation.

7. (a) A plane wave is normally incident from air to the surface of dielectric medium.
Show that a partial standing wave is formed in air. [8M]
(b) Reflection of an incident plane wave from the surface of a certain dielectric
material of effectively infinite depth is seen produce a standing wave ratio of
2 in air. The face of the dielectric is an electric field minimum. Find the
dielectric constant of the material. [8M]

8. (a) For a plane wave with E = 4 sin (2π ×107 t - 0.8 x)az V/m. Determine the
time average power carried by the wave. [8M]
(b) Using Poynting theorem find the expression for power flow in a co axial cable
. [8M]

mine the magnetic field intensity H at a point on the axis of the coil and 100m
away from the coil. The relative permeability of free space surrounding the coil is
unity and also derive the formula employed. [16M]

4. (a) Given E = Em sin(ωt -βz)ay in free space, find D, B and H. [8M]


(b) A current sheet K= (8/µ0) ay (A/m), at x = 0 separates region 1, x < 0 and
µr1 = 3, from region 2, x > 0 and µr2 = 1. Given H1 = (10/µ0 ) (ay + az )

6. (a) Show that a linearly polarized wave can be obtained as the superposition of
two circularly polarized waves rotating in opposite directions but at the same
angular rate. [8M]
(b) Sea water at a frequency of 5 x 108 Hz has µr = 1, εr = 81, σ = 4.5 mhos/m.
Find the ratio of conduction current density to displacement current density
at this frequency. [8M]

7. Explain the phenomenon of reflection by a perfect dielectric under obtique incidence


with parallel polarization. Obtain the Brewstar angle for this case. [16M]

8. (a) A uniform plane wave with wave length 3cm in free space is normally incident
on fiber glass (σ = o, εr = 4.9). [8M]

i. What thickness of glass will produce no reflections
ii. What percentage of the incident power will be transmitted through the
fiber glass if the frequency is reduced by 10%.

1. (a) Distinguish between potential and potential gradient. Explain why in the
analysis of electrostatic fields, it is simpler to use electric potential that electric
field strength. [10M]
(b) State and explain conservative property of electric field. [6M]

2. (a) A parallel plate capacitor consists of two plates each 30cm×30cm spaced 2
mm apart two dielectrics each 1mm thick having relative permittivities of 3
and 5. If the potential difference between the plates is 5000V, Calculate the
voltage gradient in each dielectric. [10M]
(b) A parallel plate capacitor is composed of thin metal sheets 25cm×25cm with
glass as dielectric 6.25mm thick in between with relative dielectric constant=6.
Find the capacitance. [6M]

3. (a) Define and establish Ampere’s circuital Law for magnetostatic fields. [6M]
(b) State and prove Stoke’s theorem. [10M]

4. (a) In a nonmagnetic medium, E = 50cos(109 t - 8x) ay + 40sin (109 t - 8x) az


V/m, find the dielectric constant εr and the corresponding H. [8M]
(b) A conducting bar can slide freely over two conducting parallel rails. While
Sliding, the bar always makes 900 with the rails. The starting end of the first
