Primavera P6 Lab Session 1

1. User Interface
ref: Tutorial Lesson 3

Run P6 and Login

Start -> All Programs -> Oracle - Primavera P6 -> Project Management Login Name: admin; Password: admin; Database: ORAPMDB

Open an Existing Project

Menu: File Open Choose any item with a folder icon in front (NOT those with a pyramid icon, which are EPS nodes, see section 2) Make sure at the bottom shared access mode is selected (exclusive is ok, but NOT read only)

Layout / User Interface

Menu: View Layout Open. Select No if prompted to save changes to current layout Choose Classic WBS Layout Open Get familiar with those items in the UI: Toolbar; Layout Options Bar; Command Bar Activity Table (top left); Gantt Chart (Bar Chart, top right); Activity Details (bottom)

2. Enterprise Project Structure (EPS)

ref: Tutorial Lesson 4 Menu: Enterprise Enterprise Project Structure Click Add to create an EPS item named BCN4720 Use the arrows in the right panel to move BCN4720 to the 1st position in the top level Close the EPS window

3. Create a New Project

ref: Tutorial Lesson 5 Menu: File New Select EPS (select BCN4720) Enter Project ID (must be unique, use Bldg-06 if you dont have one in mind) and Project Name Keep the Must Finish By empty - - Finish Menu: Enterprise Projects, to see all your projects within EPS structure Project Details Defaults tab Calendar: Standard 5 Day Workweek w/ Basic Holidays Right click the project just created Open

4. Create a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)

ref: Tutorial Lesson 6 Menu: Project WBS WBS Root node is the project (i.e. Bldg-06) Right click Add, OR click the Add button on the right side command bar, to add new WBS items Use the arrows in the right panel to manipulate the level/position of the WBS items

5. Add Activities
ref: Tutorial Lesson 7 Menu: Project Activities On the right side command bar, click Add button, to open the New Activity Wizard Type in Activity ID, Activity Name choose WBS choose Task Dependent for Activity Type - - Finish In Activity Table (top left window), right-click Add (OR use Insert key on your keyboard as shortcut) Type in Activity ID, Activity Name (NTP), Original Duration in the Activity Table Get familiar with those items in Activity Details (bottom window): General tab: Activity Type (Start Milestone), Activity Calendar; Status tab: Original Duration; Codes tab: Activity Code.

6. Save your Project

Your progress (and mistake) is automatically saved, and cannot be undone. Menu: File Close All, to close the projects you are working on Menu: File Exit, to exit P6 Menu: File Export / Import - , to save your project to a file for backup

Create a new project named Bldg-06 if you have not done so. In the project Bldg-06, create the WBS structure as follows:
