The following examples are based on the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 6th ed. (2010). They are presented as a guide. If you do not see the one you need, consult the manual (available at the Reference Desk). A book entry consists of the following information (if available): author (inverted surname with initials); publication year of the work (in parentheses); title (italicized; capitalize only initial word and first word after colon); place of publication and name of publisher An article entry has the following information (if available): author (inverted surname with initials); publication date of the work (year, month, day; in parentheses); title of the article (capitalize only initial word and first word after colon); name of the periodical (italicized; capitalize using standard title rules) and volume number (italicized) [provide issue number only if each issue begins with page one]; page numbers. References may single-spaced; but double-spacing is required between references. The APA suggests the use of brief reference citations whenever you incorporate another person's words, facts, or ideas into your own work. A reference citation should be inserted into your text, either at the end of a quote or end of a sentence. The citation consists of the author's last name, the year of publication, and the page, chapter, figure, table, or equation reference (if available) in parentheses (See pgs. 174-179).
