1. (a) What are Non-linear bias circuits? Why do we need this circuit?
(b) Explain any one Non-linear biasing circuit. [8+8]
2. (a) Explain in detail the need of rectifiers and filters in power supplies.
(b) With a neat circuit diagram explain the principle of operation of series type
regulated power supply. Enumerate its design procedure. Why this type is
called so? [8+8]
3. Sketch a 723 IC voltage regulator connected to function as a positive voltage regu-
lator with V0 > Vref . Write an equation for V0 in terms of Vref , and briefly explain
the required supply voltage. [16]
4. Design a general SCR pulse-trigger circuit to obtain a range of conduction angle of
90 to 180 degrees. Assume 60 Hz ,115-V rms (163-V peak) line operation, and a
trigger device firing voltage of 40 V. [16]
5. (a) Derive the expressions for the following performance factors of a single-phase
fully controlled bridge converter
i. Input harmonic factor
ii. Voltage ripple factor
iii. Active power input
iv. Reactive power input.
(b) A voltage source e = 100 sin 377 t supplies a resistive load of 100µ through
a thyristor, which performs half-wave controlled rectification. Calculate the
average power in the load, if the firing angle is fired at 450 with respect to the
supply voltage waveform. [8+8]
6. Draw and explain the simple SCR series inverter circuit employing Class A type
commutation. Draw and explain the relevant waveforms. Explain its limitations.

7. (a) Explain a simple SCR battery charger.
(b) Explain the operation of an SCR universal motor speed control circuit. [8+8]
8. (a) Explain the principle of and theory behind induction heating.
(b) Compare induction heating method with conventional methods of industrial

1. (a) What is meant by ‘Drift’ ? Give the main reasons for the drift of anode current
in D.C amplifier.
(b) Give an amplifier circuit by means of which drift can be Minimized. [8+8]
2. (a) Compare series and short voltage regulator circuits in all respects.
(b) Design a series voltage regulator with the following specifications Vo =20volts,
Vi n=22-30 volts, Il oad(max)=50mA. [10+6]
3. (a) Sketch a regulator circuit that uses an LM237 IC negative voltage regulator
and explain it.
(b) Explain how the differential output of a regulator improves its performance.

4. (a) Explain the basic requirements for the successful firing of thyristor in detail.
(b) With the help of a neat diagram, explain the operation of resistance firing
circuit for a thyristor. Also draw and explain the associated waveform. Show
the relation between the firing angle delay and the resistance. [6+10]
5. (a) A single phase fully controlled bridge converter supplies an inductive load.
Assuming that the output current is virtually constant and is equal to Id
=3A, determine the following performance measures, if the supply voltage
is 230V and if the firing angle is maintained at (Π/6) radians. i) Average
output voltage ii) Supply fundamental current iii) Fundamental power factor
iv) supply harmonic factor v) voltage ripple factor
(b) Explain the effect of freewheeling diodes in converter circuits. [10+6]
6. Draw and explain the simple SCR series inverter circuit employing Class A type
commutation. Draw and explain the relevant waveforms. Explain its limitations.

3. Explain the principle of operation of shunt voltage regulator using integrated circuit.

i. Latching current
ii. holding current of SCR.
(b) A thyristor whose latching current is 25mA is connected in series with a resistor
of 20 ohms , an inductor of 0.5H and a DC power supply of 100V. The duration
of the firing pulse is 40 microsec. Will the thyristor get fired?
(c) Why is a gate-to-cathode resistance required for sensitive gate SCRs. [4+8+4]
5. Explain the fully controlled single phase bridge type phase controlled rectifier circuit
and give the expression for the average dc output voltage. [16]
6. Draw and explain the simple SCR series inverter circuit employing Class A type

quadrant chopper.

7. Draw and explain the simple heat control circuit for resistance welding with the

8. (a) Explain various direct ultrasonic methods used for optical image detection
(visualisation).
(b) Explain how separation of mixtures is possible by ultrasonic waves. [8+8]
