THE TRESTLE : HISTORY

Operations began on July 4, 1931

The McKinley Bridge served as

Route 66’s first Mississippi cross-
ing. It also played another role as a
transition between Route 66 and
an earlier form of transportation:
the electric interurban railway

The interurban rail system was

a larger, faster and cheaper
version of the electric streetcar
that helped develop industry and
connect communities on both sides
of the Mississippi

The Trestle : Current

The current Trestle structure is well-preserved,

structurally sound and uniquely appropriate for
reuse as an elevated park and bikeway.

The Trestle at Branch Street and the

McKinley Bridge Bikeway opened to
the public on June 7, 2008.

CHALLENGES

• Operations and Maintenance

• Safety and Security

• Accessibility

• Programming

©2008 Kiku Obata & Company | the HOK Planning Group | HNTB Corporation | Vector Communications Great Rivers Greenway District : Public Presentation : The Trestle : Page 39
CHALLENGES : operations + maintenance

• Posted “Hours of Operation”

• Posted set of “Park/Trail – Rules/Code of Conduct”
• Design will utilize a high degree of low-maintenance materials to
minimize the frequency and extent of maintenance required
• Recycled materials
• Low-maintenance native plant materials

• Operating Scenarios
• Friends of The Trestle
• Strategic Partnerships

©2008 Kiku Obata & Company | the HOK Planning Group | HNTB Corporation | Vector Communications Great Rivers Greenway District : Public Presentation : The Trestle : Page 40
CHALLENGES : SAFETY + SECURITY

• Under consideration as part of an overall safety + security strategy:

• Parking areas/trailhead facilities – security cameras with
signs posted
• Emergency call stations
• Trail location markers

• Lighting:
• Pathway lighting on trail
• Higher light levels at parking areas, trailhead and park facilities and
at vertical access points

©2008 Kiku Obata & Company | the HOK Planning Group | HNTB Corporation | Vector Communications Great Rivers Greenway District : Public Presentation : The Trestle : Page 41
CHALLENGES : SAFETY + SECURITY, cont.

• Emergency vehicle access from both ends

• Open, highly visible stair design

• Multiple access points

• Guardrails – 54” high for bikes, 42” high for pedestrians

• Protection of adjacent private property

with secure green screen/trellis structures

©2008 Kiku Obata & Company | the HOK Planning Group | HNTB Corporation | Vector Communications Great Rivers Greenway District : Public Presentation : The Trestle : Page 42
CHALLENGES : ACCESSIBILITY

• The Trestle will be fully accessible and will be enjoyed

by people of all ages and abilities

• At grade access to the Trestle from South Trestle Park

and Branch Street

• Elevators and/or ramps will be provided at multiple

points along the Trestle to ensure that the
park and trail are accessible to all

©2008 Kiku Obata & Company | the HOK Planning Group | HNTB Corporation | Vector Communications Great Rivers Greenway District : Public Presentation : The Trestle : Page 43

a unique opportunity exists

Only two other trestles in the world have

been successfully transformed:

The Promenade Plantée in Paris, France;

and The Highline in New York City.

The Trestle in St. Louis could be next!

Thank You
