1. (a) i. Mention the names of the gases which are used in the Electrical apparatus

2. Explain the series - parallel resonant circuit and discuss its advantages and disad-
vantages [16]

3. (a) Draw a typical impulse current generator circuit and explain its operation and
application.
(b) A 12-Stage impulse generator has capacitors each rated at 0.3 µF , 150 KV.
The capacitance of the test specimen is 400 PF. Find the wave front and wave
tail Resistances to produce a 1.2/50 µsec. Impulse wave. [8+8]

4. (a) Why is a cockroft - Walton circuit preferred for voltage multiplier.


(b) Explain cockroft - Walton circuit with a schematic diagram. [6+10]

5. Give different circuits that produce impulse waves explaining clearly their relative

6. Explain with a neat diagram the Principle of operation of an electrostatic voltmeter.

3. (a) How are the wave front and wave tail times controlled in impulse generator
circuits
(b) An impulse generator has eight stages with each condenser rated for 0.16 µF
and 125 KV. The load capacitor available is 100 PF. Find the series Resistance
and damping Resistance needed to produce 1.2/50 µS impulse wave. What
is the maximum output voltage of the generator, if the charging voltage is
120KV. [8+8]
4. (a) Explain clearly the basic principle of operation of an electrostatic generator.
(b) Discuss the advantages and limitations of vande Graf generator. [8+8]
5. (a) Derive an expression for voltage efficiency of single stage impulse generator.
(b) An impulse current generator has a total capacitance of 15 µF , the charging
voltage of 125 KV, the circuit inductance is 2 mH and the dynamic resistance
is 1 ohm. Find the peak current and wave shape of the wave. [8+8]
6. (a) Compare the relative advantages and disadvantages of using a series resistance
micro ammeter and a potential divider with an electrostatic voltmeter for
measuring high d.c. voltages.
(b) What is capacitance voltage transformer? Explain the phasor diagram how a
tuned capacitance voltage transformer can be used for high voltage measure-
ments in power systems. [8+8]

7. What are the problems associated with measurement of very high impulse voltages?
Explain how these can be take care of during measurements? [16]
8. (a) How the dielectric constant and loss factor of an insulating material can be
measured under high voltage condition at power frequency ? Draw the neces-
sary circuit diagram and explain the method.

2. What is a cascaded Transformer? Explain why cascading is done? Describe with


a neat diagram a three stage cascaded Transformer. [16]

3. (a) Explain with a neat sketch three electrode gap for high current switching.
(b) Calculate the peak current and wave shape of the output current of thefollow-
ing generator.the total capacitance of the generator is 53 µF . The charging
voltage is 200 KV. The circuit inductance is 1.47 mH, and the dynamic resis-
tance of the test object is 0.05 Ω [8+8]

4. What is a cascaded transformer ? Explain why cascading is done ? Describe with


a neat diagram, a three stage cascaded transformer. [16]

5. (a) Explain any one method of controlled tripping of impulse generator.


(b) A 12-stage impulse generator has 0.126 µF condensers. The wave front and
wave tail resistances connected are 800 ohms respectively. If the load con-
denser is 100pF, find the front and tail times of the impulse wave produced.

1. What do you understand from the term ionization? What are the two main theories
adopted for ionization. [16]

2. (a) Explain why the use of series Resonant Transformers are advantageous over
A.C. testing transformers.
(b) The primary and secondary winding inductances of a Tesla Coil are 0.093 H
and 0.011 H respectively with a mutual inductances between the windings
equal to 0.025H. The capacitances included in the primary and secondary
circuits are 1.5 µF and 18 nF. If the Tesla Coil is charged through a 10 KV
d.c. supply, Find the output voltage and determine its waveform. Neglect the
winding resistance. [8+8]

7. (a) What are the conditions to be satisfied by a potential divider to be used for
impulse measurement.
(b) A Ragowskii Coil is to be designed to measure impulse currents of 10 KA
having a rate of change of current of 1010 A/sec. The current is read by a
VTVM as a potential drop across the integrating circuit connected to the
secondary. If the coil is used to measure impulse current of 8/20 µs wave and
of the same peak current, what should be R − C integrating circuit. [8+8]

8. (a) Explain why the Schering Bridge is particularly suitable for measurement at
high voltages and outline the precautions necessary to avoid errors.

(b) A sample of insulation is placed in one arm CD of the Schering Bridge. Under
balanced the other three arms are as following: AD=109 pF, BC=100 Ω and
AB=309 Ω in parallel with a loss free capacitance of 0.5 µF . Determine the
capacitance equivalent series resistance and p.f. of the insulation in the arm
CD. [6+10]
