UNIVERSITY OF ONTARIO INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

UOIT – A UNIVERSITY
DEGREE WITH AN EDGE
The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) is not your
traditional university. In fact, since opening its doors in 2003, UOIT
has received accolades from students and employers alike, for
providing a leading-edge education that ensures graduates will fill
leadership roles in the jobs of tomorrow.
At UOIT you’ll find everything you need to succeed in the new economy
as a next-generation professional. From sustainable energy, to the
development of clean and green vehicles, to furthering research on
environmental factors in human cancer and HIV/AIDS prevention and
more, UOIT students study in career-focused undergraduate and
graduate programs, many of which are unique in Ontario and Canada.
That means when you graduate, you will do so with the real-world
skills essential to helping Ontario take its position as a global leader
in the years to come.
Because UOIT is Ontario’s first laptop-based university, our graduates
find their high-tech skills give them a competitive edge when entering
the marketplace. Plus, our commitment to research excellence means
students have the opportunity to pursue innovative research that will
impact society by addressing socio-economic issues of provincial,
national and global significance.
We also make it easier than ever before to turn a college diploma
into a degree. Thanks to agreements with several partner institutions,
we offer college graduates advanced standing in a number of degree
programs, including Commerce, Communication, Criminology and
Justice, Health Sciences, Information Technology and Legal Studies.
But don’t take our word for it; ask our students. Through independent
surveys such as the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE),
the Canadian University Survey Consortium and others, students
consistently place UOIT at the head of the class when it comes to
their overall satisfaction, our technology base, interaction with
professors, opportunities to collaborate with their peers and others
on campus and more.
We’re proud to earn high marks from our students and their
employers.
All of this and we’re right here in the GTA, with plenty of room to
grow and room for you too!

STUDENTS FIND
SATISFACTION AT UOIT
In 2008 our students ranked us ahead of our peer groups in NSSE, a
comprehensive North American survey that questioned students at
769 post-secondary institutions, pointing in particular to its state-of-the-
art technology, academically challenging programs and collaborations
with expert faculty.

“The faculty and administrative staff at UOIT are very helpful,

knowledgeable and experienced in every aspect – from helping one
understand the course material to assisting in getting a full-time
job. My position as a research assistant at UOIT, the summer after
my second year helped me understand my desire to pursue a
future Master’s degree. The high-tech learning environment has
also been really helpful as it prepared me well for my co-op position
at Ontario Power Generation. UOIT is a great place to study and
prepare for the world of opportunity out there.”

MOBILE LEARNING
You’ve never experienced education like this before. UOIT’s national
award-winning mobile learning environment allows you to connect
with your professors and peers any time, anywhere – and puts you
one step ahead come graduation.
UOIT is a leader among North American universities in implementing
and using course- and industry-specific software for laptop learning.
You will receive a high-end laptop at the beginning of your studies
and your professors will develop sophisticated course content using
a powerful campus-wide online learning management system.
One of the greatest advantages of the mobile learning program is
that all students have equal access to the same technology,
resources and services.
Inside or outside of the classroom, you can make quality computer-
based presentations, conduct Internet research, work electronically
on your own or with other students and have seamless access to all
online resources. An annual mobile-computing fee covers the use of
your hardware learning tools, extensive technical support, virus
protection, high-speed Internet, printing services, insurance and a
wide range of program-specific software. In addition, all laptops
are refreshed with appropriate software each year and upgraded
every two years. We’re committed to giving you even more value for
your education and your investment in technology while studying at
UOIT.

“The experience I obtained while completing my undergraduate

in the Master of Science program. The hands-on research that
I was able to conduct during my undergraduate degree helped
foster my lab skills, and my ability for critical-thinking. Not only
was the faculty approachable and extremely knowledgeable,
but the state-of-the-art facilities in which I learned allowed me

CAMPUS LIFE
UOIT understands that your university experience is about more than
just the challenges you face in the classroom. From your first day on
campus, and even before, you’ll find activities and pursuits that meet
your own unique interests.
A variety of fun activities and informative sessions are planned to
welcome you to campus and assist you with the transition to university.
In addition, the Student Life office offers a comprehensive first-year
student orientation program throughout the academic year.
Many students get connected through dozens of campus clubs,
including groups that relate to your program of study such as Med
Lab United and the Justice Society. Other students may pursue a
popular interest or topic like the UOIT Triathlon Club, while
organizations such as Students Against Social Injustice and Rotaract
work toward a better world by advocating on key social issues.
We even offer a Co-curricular Recognition program that supports and
recognizes your participation and leadership in campus activities.
Leadership awards and recognition ceremonies are held for graduating
students in the spring.
E.P. Taylor’s, one of UOIT’s campus pubs, is located in the Student
Centre and is a popular spot to catch a regular lineup of great
entertainment for all ages, including comedy at lunch and Campus
Idol. It even merited mention from the Harvard Crimson, online
edition. “To realize the potential of an on-campus pub at Harvard,
one need only look at places like E.P. Taylor’s at UOIT,” wrote the
Crimson. “With comedy shows every Monday, pub nights every
Wednesday, and huge all-campus events Friday and Saturday, the
establishment is everything any student could wish for.”
If your interests run more towards the political arena, you may want
to consider the Student Association, which works hard to serve the
needs of all students. If you’re more the happy host, our Student
Ambassador program could be just your thing. Student Ambassadors
are proactive leaders who introduce prospective students and their
families to the UOIT community by leading campus tours and providing
a current student’s perspective.
We also offer student life programs, which promote intellectual and
personal growth by connecting you to existing campus opportunities
and assisting with the development of new initiatives. Staff liaises
with the Student Association, the Student Centre, residences, student
clubs, academic units and all student services to enhance your
student satisfaction.
