INTRODUCTION

SK Kanchong Darat was established in XXXX at Jalan Besar,Kanchong Darat, Banting, Selangor. As for 2013, the school is currently attending 1000 students from standard 1 to standard 6 in one school session. In addition to that, SK Kanchong Darat also has its own pre-school institution which is built behind the schools main academic blocks. SK Kanchong Darat is a well facilitated school with a good library, canteen, classes, meeting room, hall, computer lab and special rooms. The current headmaster responsible in ruling the school is the charismatic Haji Abdul Hamid bin Haji Md Daud. Holding the school code of BBA1027, SK Kanchong Darat is already well known in the region for the improving statistics in UPSR result throughout the years. In 2012, SK Kanchong Darat has achieved a good stand in the Selangor UPSR results rank by having more than 30 students getting all As in the exam. The school aims to beat the past year record in the 2013s UPSR and thus grabs the title of the best school in Sel angor for UPSR. In order to maintain the good results, the school has came out with a brilliant initiative of organizing the Program XXX(PROMTIM) in order to improve the study and motivation of students whom not yet to acquire the basic skills of reading and calculating. The students whom are affected to join this program are specially selected by the teachers based on their overall academic performance. The students selected are the 25 students in standard 4, 5 and 6 whom are dealing with problems in basic reading and counting. PROTIM prepares the students with a specified module for each subject such that Bahasa Melayu, English and Mathematics. Assisted by four passionate teachers, the program is conducted daily for the selected students. As for this semester, the second semester, we were placed by the CAS unit in SK Kanchong Darat as our external CAS venue. Our team, comprising 12 members of dedicated males and females, we emphasized on giving motivation and increasing the students awareness for the need of studying. We were to conjoin PROTIM program organized by the school .We aimed not to be details in teaching them the syllabus but more to enhance their motivations and awareness in study. As said by one of the teachers, the students whom involve in the PROTIM program are actually low in motivation and self-esteem and thus they must be polished psychologically before going intensive in their academic. Thus, we were there for at least 5 weeks to help the school to achieve that first strategic planning.

REFLECTION
By Awatif Afzal binti Ariffin Being placed at SK Kanchong Darat for CAS this semester has really enlightened my view towards smallaged children. As a last child, I was having a tad bit of problem to communicate and interact with small children. Though I would like to be around with children, I always found myself to be clueless and awkward around them. Thus, after 5 weeks or so mingling with the students of SK Kanchong Darat, I have somehow learnt on how to deal with children and their attitudes. At first, I cant tolerate with them because they are so naughty and love to disobey on simple things that I said. On the first visit, I tried to smile more and take less control of the situation no matter how naughty and uncontrolled they get. But then, as we went there for more visits, I saw them acting out of control with me taking less control of the classroom so I decided that I should learn to approach them in a way they would listen and I can take control of the situation. So what I did was I observed the way the teachers of SK Kanchong Darat deal with the students and their cheeky behaviors. I found that the tactics were very simple, really. The teachers just let them to be in what way they are but then speak to them nicely without any anger element but ended their words with effective advices. I found this very helpful when I tried this method of communication with the students in the next visit. I think now Ive improved myself in the skills of dealing with children especially to those who wont listen. Overall, another thing that Ive learnt is how to tackle kids that are slower academically than their peers. Being the mentor for 25 students whom not yet to acquire the basic reading and calculating skills, Ive discovered effective ways to inspire them to do so. It seems that they are giving up because they are slower than their pals and they tries to escape by prioritizing games and unnecessary things rather than studying. I somehow understand what they feel because once, Ive been at their place. So what I did was I tried to motivate and inspire them first. One day, my mentees were like really lazy to even cooperate in the reading session and all, so I asked one of my mentees on what one thing that she really wants then she said a tablet and to have her own Facebook account. So I said to her that let me help her to read faster so that she can have a Facebook account in no time. Surprisingly, she was fond to what Ive said and she went straight grabbing a book and asked me to teach her to read. Another incident was when I was teaching them Mathematics. She was really distracted with the surroundings and not willing to cooperate with myself trying to help her solving the questions. I almost gave up but then I came to another approach in which I asked her to count the math questions using the candies that we brought. I clumped a number of candies in two parts and asked her to calculate the total number of candies on order to solve the addition questions. It was amazing to see on how she became more into it when I put it into a real life situation. So what small personal conclusions that I can concluded is that to attend the slow learners, we shouldnt approach them in the common way. Go different and be patient. Its not that they cant do it, just they dont feel any urge to do so seeing their friends already going far. Motivation comes first, effort comes later and fun comes all the way. God willing, we can ace them into bright futures.
