0. 2 Thi s st andar d is one oI a series oI I ndi an
St andar ds dealing with t he accept ance tests Ior
cent ri Iugal , mi xed Ilow and axial pumps.
These st andards would correspond t o t hree
classes oI tests A, B and C; t he use oI Class A
and B is restricted to special cases when t here
is a need to have t he pump perIormance more
precisely deIined. The Class A is t he most
accurat e whereas the Class C is t he least accu-
rat e. It should be borne in mi nd t hat Class A
and B test require mor e accurat e apparat us
and met hods whi ch increases t he cost oI such
tests.
0. 3 The st andar d arrangement s and procedures
descri bed are those to be empl oyed Ior testing
a pump individually, without reIerence to its
Iinal installation conditions or t he eIIect upon it
oI any associated Iittings, these being the usual
conditions in which a pump is tested at the
manuIact urer' s works.
0. 4 Pump perIormance may be aIIected by
conditions oI t he Iinal site installation, and
procedures are described Ior carryi ng out
' st andard tests ' on certain types oI instal-
lations oI which an overall perIormance is
requi red.
0.5 The conditions i n which t he pumps are
Iinally installed, however, oIten do not permi t
reliable test measurement s, and r ecommenda-
tions are made concerning t he procedure t o be
adopt ed where the layout precl udes tests in
conIormity with t he st andards, or wher e t he

NOTE Attention is drawn to the Iact that
in this St andard, the type number is based on the
total head oI a multistage pump, and not on the
head per stage, and that it applies to the guaranteed
Ilow rate, which is not in conIormity with the
common practice where K is calculated Ior the Ilow

stated are not guarant eed but are i ndi cat ed
on t he basis oI prior tests or are given in
pri nt ed curves ( I or mass produced pumps )
( see Appendi x A ).
For a combi ned mot or - pump uni t ( Ior

9

IS : 9137 - 1978
A chieI oI tests shall be appointed, possessing
adequate experience in measuring operations.
Normally, when the test is carried out at the
manuIacturer's works, the chieI oI tests is a
staII member oI the manuIacturing Iirm.
All persons charged with eIIecting the mea-
surements are subordinated during the tests to
the chieI oI tests, who conducts and supervises
the measurements, reports on test conditions
and the results oI the tests and then draIts the
test report. All questions arising in connection
with the measurements and their execution are
subject to his decision.
The parties concerned shall provide all
assistance that the chieI oI tests considers
necessary.
5.5 Test Programme Only the guaran-
teed operational data shall Iorm the basis oI
the test; other data determined by measure-
ment during the tests shall have merely an
indicative (inIormative) Iunction and it shall
be so stated iI they are included in the
programme.
5.6 Testing Apparatus When the measur-
ing procedure is being decided on, the measur-
ing and recording apparatus required shall be
speciIied at the same time.
The chieI oI tests shall be responsible Ior
checking the correct installation oI these
apparatuses and their perIect Iunctioning.
All oI the measuring apparatus shall be
covered by reports showing by calibration or
by comparison that it complies with the
requirements oI 5.12. These reports shall be
presented iI required.
5.7 Test Arrangements
5.7.1 Standard Test Arrangements Ideally,
the Ilow through the inlet head measuring
section should be such that:
a) the velocity is uniIorm, and axial, across
the section; and
b) the static pressure across the section is
uniIorm.
These are the conditions Ior the standard
test arrangement, but they are impossible to
achieve completely, and it is impracticable to
check them Ior the class oI test covered by
this standard.
However, signiIicant maldistribution and
swirl can be avoided by keeping bends and
combinations oI bends, and divergences and
discontinuities oI cross-sectional area, Irom the
proximity oI the measuring section. In
general, the importance oI inlet Ilow condi-
tions increases with the pump type number,
and Ior type numbers greater than 1.5 it is
more meaningIul to reproduce site conditions
than it is to use a standard test arrangement.
For such non-standard conditions an agree-
ment shall be reached in the contract (see
Appendix B ).
5.7.1.1 Inlet pressure tappings In general,
the pressure tapping shall be placed in a section
oI equal diameter to, and concentric with, the
inlet branch oI the pump. It should under
normal conditions be located two diameters
upstream Irom the pump inlet Ilange. More-
over it shall never be placed:
a) in a diverging section, or within Iour
diameters oI straight pipe downstream
Irom the divergence;
b) within the plane oI a bend, either in the
bend itselI or within Iour diameters oI
straight pipe downstream Irom the bend.
It may, however, be agreed to site a
pressure tapping in this region at right
angles to the plane oI the bend; and
c) within Iour diameters oI straight pipe
Iollowing a sudden contraction, or other
discontinuity oI cross-sectional area.
When interpretation oI readings in non-
standard conditions is being negotiated,
consideration shall be given to:
a) whether the value oI inlet head itselI is
important (Ior example, Ior NPSH
tests ); and
b) the ratio oI inlet velocity head to the
pump total head.
II this ratio is very small ( less than 0.5 )
and the value oI inlet head itselI is not impor-
tant, readings Irom a tapping in the pump inlet
Ilange may be used in the inlet total head
equation given in 3.2.3.6 (Ior ratio ~0. 5:
2 D upstream ).
5.7.1.2 Outlet pressure tappings Under
normal conditions the outlet pressure tapping
should be located two diameters downstream
Irom the pump outlet Ilange.
For the pumps oI type number equal to or
less than 0.5, the outlet pressure tapping may
be located directly at the pump outlet, provided
it is at right angles to the plane oI the volute
or any other bend Iormed by the pump casing.
For the pumps oI type number greater than
0.5, the straight parallel pipe shall be coaxial
with the outlet pipe oI the pump and have the
same bore. The tapping shall be located in the
pipe wall in a plane through the pipe axis at
right angles to the plane oI the volute or other
bend Iormed by the pump casing.
5.7.2 Pumps Tested with Fittings II speci-
Iied in the contract, standard tests shall be
10

t hat t he ( NPSH ) requi red by t he pump is
equal t o or less t han t he speciIied ( NP S H) .
In no case shall t he cavitation tests be used
to check t hat t he pump will be Iree Irom

7.1.1 Test Tvpes Ther e ar e two distinct
possible types oI cavitation test:
a) A check may be made simply to show
t hat t he pump is suIIiciently Iree oI
cavitation at t he speciIied dut y and
( NPSH ). Thi s t ype oI test is described
in 7.1.1.1; and
b) In t he other t ype, cavitation perIorm-
ance is explored more Iully by reduci ng
( NPSH ) unt i l measurabl e eIIects ar e

oI t he liquid to be pumped and oI materials
oI construction and the operat i ng conditions
to be expect ed.
7.1.2 Methods of Jarving the ( NPSH )
The Iollowing met hods may be used:
7.1.2.1 The pump is installed in a closed
pi pe loop ( see Fig. 6 ) in which the pressure
level or, by an al t erat i on oI t emperat ures, the
vapour pressure may be vari ed without chang-
ing t he pump head or rat e oI Ilow until
cavitation occurs in the pump.
Cavitation in outlet and inlet regul at i ng
valves may make this test more diIIicult and
special valves may be requi red.
Arrangement s Ior cooling or heat i ng t he
liquid in t he loop may be needed in order to
mai nt ai n the requi red t emperat ure, and a gas
separation tank may also be requi red. The
t ank shall be oI suIIicient size and so designed
as to prevent t he ent rai nment oI gas in t he
pump inlet Il ow.
De-aerat i on oI wat er used Ior a cavitation
test is necessary iI the pump is to be used in
practice wi th de-aerat ed wat er.
Stilling screens may be needed iI
m/ s, where A is the cross-sectional area oI
t he t ank.
7.1.2.2 The pump draws liquid t hrough
an unobst ruct ed suction pi pe Irom a sump
in whi ch t he level oI t he Iree liquid surIace
may be adjusted ( see Fig. 7 ).
7.1.2.3 The pressure oI the liquid ent er-
ing t he pump is adjusted by means oI a t hrot t l e
valve installed in the inlet pipe at the lowest
practical level ( see Fig. 8 ).

Cavitation in the Ilow through a throttle
valve can sometimes be prevented by using two
or more throttle devices connected in series or
by arranging Ior the throttle valve to discharge
directly into a closed vessel or a large diameter
pipe interposed between the throttle and the
pump inlet. BaIIles and a means Ior extracting
air Irom such a vessel may be needed, espe-
cially when the ( NPSH ) is low.
When the throttle valve is to be partially
closed and it is situated at a distance less than
12 inlet diameters Irom the pump inlet Ilange,
it is necessary to make sure that the pipe is
Iull oI liquid at the position oI the inlet
pressure tappings.
7.2 Determination of ( NPSH) Required by
the Pump Tests described in 7.1.1.2 can
be conducted by any oI the methods indicated
in Fig. 6 to 8. However, test as per Fig. 8 is
more practicable and is recommended Ior
normal commercial testing oI industrial
pumps. By this method the measured value oI
NPSH required by the pump is generally
higher than what would be expected under
simulated conditions ( see also Fig. 9 ).
7.3 Li mi ts of Error in Determination of
Specified (NPSH) The maximum limits oI
error concerning speciIied ( NPSH ) measure-
ments shall be:
a) 5.3 oI the measured ( NPSH ), or
b) 0.2 m,
whichever is the greater, provided that the
measurements are made with a liquid column
manometer.
The case oI tests with liquids at high tem-
perature or near their critical points should be
studied with special care in the contract.
7.4 Measurement of Pump Head, Outlet
Flow Rate, Speed of Rotation, Power Input
( i f necessary ) and Vapour Pressure
The requirements oI 6 regarding the
measurement oI head, outlet rate oI Ilow,
speed oI rotation and power input shall also
apply during cavitation tests. II the test con-
ditions are so unsteady as to require repeated
readings, variations oI speciIied ( NPSH ) arc
permitted up to a maximum oI:
a) 1.5 times the values given Ior head in
Table 5, or
b) 0.2 m,
whichever is the greater.
Particular care is needed to ensure that in
the Ilow measurement cavitation does not
aIIect the accuracy oI the Ilowmeter. It is also
necessary to take care to avoid the ingress oI
air through joints and glands.
The vapour pressure oI the tes.t liquid en-
tering the pump shall be determined with suIIi-
cient accuracy to comply with 7.3. When the
vapour pressure is derived Irom standard data
and the measurement oI the temperature oI
the liquid entering the pump, the necessary
accuracy oI temperature measurement may
have to be demonstrated.
The active element oI a temperature-
measuring probe shall be not less than 1/8 oI
the inlet pipe diameter Irom the well oI the inlet
pipe. II the immersion oI the temperature-
measuring element in the inlet Ilow is less than
that required by the instrument manuIacturer,
then a calibration at that immersion depth,
may be required.
Care shall be taken to ensure the tempera-
ture measuring probes inserted into the pump
inlet pipe do not inIluence the measurements
oI inlet pressure.
8. TESTS ON PUMPS FOR LIQUIDS
OTHER THAN CLEAN COLD WATER
The perIormance oI a pump may vary subs-
tantially with the nature oI the liquid being
pumped. Although it is not possible to give
general rules whereby perIormance with clean
cold water can be used to predict perIormance
with another liquid, it is oIten desirable Ior
the parties to agree on empirical rules to suit
the particular circumstances and test the pump-
with clean cold water.
8.1 Characteristics of 'Clean Cold Water'-
The characteristics oI the water corresponding
to what is called in this standard ' clean cold
water ' shall be within the limits indicated in-
Table 8.
The total dissolved and Iree gas content
oI the water shall not exceed the saturation
volume corresponding,
a) Ior an open circuit, to the pressure and
temperature in the pump sump; and
b) Ior a closed loop, to those existing in the
tank.

GUARANTEES FOR MASS- PRODUCED PUMPS
A-1. When, Ior mass-produced pumps, t he
manuI act ur er makes reIerence in his cat al ogue
to this test code, t he curves published in his
cat al ogue shall be such t hat any pump corres-
pondi ng to t he curves gives Ior any chosen
operat i on point, aIter Class C tests, results not
di vergent Irom the values oI the published
curve by more t han:

APPENDI X B
(Clause 5.1.4)
EFFECT OF PRE- SWIRL INDUCED BY THE PUMP
B-1. Errors in t he measur ement oI pump inlet
head can occur at part capacity due to pr e-
swirl. Thi s can be det ect ed and corrected on
the Iollowing basis.
B-2. The diIIerential head is measured bet ween
the speciIied inlet measuri ng section and
anot her position Iurther upst ream where t he
pre-swirl induced by the pump is known to be
absent ( I or exampl e t he s ump) . Thi s
diIIerential head should Iollow a quadr at i c law
with Ilow; any depart ure Irom this law will
show t he amount by whi ch an inlet head
measurement must be corrected Ior the eIIect

FRICTION LOSSES
C-1. The Iormula given in 5.7.6 Ior calculating
head loss due to Iriction involves a lengthy
calculation, which would lead only in many
cases to the conclusion that a correction need
not to be applied.
C-2. Figure 13 may be used as a preliminary
check as to whether a calculation need be
made. It applies to straight steel or wrought
iron pipes oI constant circular cross section,
handling cold water. Outlet and inlet pipes
are assumed oI equal diameter, and measuring
points 2 diameters upstream and downstream
oI the inlet and outlet Ilanges respectively
( 5.7.1 ).
C-3. II the pipes are oI diIIerent diameters, the
diameter oI the smaller pipe should be used.
Then iI "no correction" is indicated, the
calculation need not be made.
C-3.1 II " correction " is indicated. Fig. 14,
which applies only to steel or wrought-iron
pipes handling cold water, may be used to
determine the value oI A.
C-4. In cases where pipes are oI other material,
or the liquid is not cold water, the graph by
Moody, given in Fig. 15, may be used, or the
Iormula Ior A given in 5.7.6 may, iI preIerred,
be solved. For the pipe roughness k one may
take the values given in Table 10 according
to the "Mechanical Engineers Handbook,
Edition 1958".
