Brochure Project
Class: COMM 130 Sec-02 Instructor:Julie Peterson Date published: 12/07/13 Description: A duplex(single-fold) brochure showcasing a paranormal photo-scavenger hunt. Objectives: Set up and align a two-sided, folded document. Create an original company logo and use it in a brochure. Incorporate quality images. (Incorporate at least four quality images (Not including the logo). One should be clipped in Photoshop and text-wrapped in InDesign so the text follows the cutout shape of the image. Write at least 250 words of original copy with at least three paragraphs. Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex (two-sided) color. Process: I first set up the document as a landscape document in Adobe In Design series CS6 with the size at 11 x 8.5. I then drew two black boxes using the shapes tool to make the entire brochure black. I then opened Adobe Illustrator series CS6 to create a whole new logo. I designed the logo by drawing various shapes using the shapes tool and then using the group selection and eye dropper tools I made a flashlight, a ghost and the ray of light coming off the flashlight. I then used the type tool and eyedropper tools to type out and color two separate boxes one to go above the image and the other to go underneath. I then saved the file in Illustrator and then re-opened it and place it on the far right side so that it would be on the front of the brochure. Afterwards I typed up my text to explain the purpose for it and the event happening. I then dew one huge text box on the left side of the second landscape document using the type tool. Afterwards I placed part of my text in there explaining the event. I then opened up a photo of myself looking for ghosts and following the tutorials provided by the instructor refined the picture using the feathering, selection, and refining tools in Photoshop series CS6. I then took that picture and placed it below the first text box where the majority of my text was. I then added a text wrap to the photo so that the text would go around my head and right shoulder. Afterwards I added various other pictures that I had gotten off of the internet and place two on the landscape that was the inside part, and then the other two on the first landscape document that would later be the back. I then went back and added corresponding text boxes using the text box tool with the text regarding each location for the scavenger/photo hunt. Afterwards using the paragraph styles tool I set up all of the text for the entire brochure to indent form remembering to not indent the first paragraph, and setting up a separate style box just for the first paragraphs in each box and changing the color of the text to a dark purple. To make sure that nothing would be ruined by the fold I set up a ruler guide in the middle at 5.5 inches on both landscape documents and using the move tool moved everything accordingly and aligning all the pictures with the correct text box.

Webpage Project
Class: COMM 130 Sec-02 Instructor:Julie Peterson Date published: 11/21/13 Description: This is a web page designed to showcase my logo. Objectives: Size (300 500 pixels ) and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page. Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it appeals to a target audience. (Write a minimum of 200 words to describe the process of creating your logo, including rationale for color choices, appeal to target audience, design skills, and other pertinent information.) Design a web page using HTML to display the logo and content. (Use TextWrangler (Macintosh) or NotePad++ (Windows)) Process: This was my first time ever working with code. The only program that I used was text wrangler, and I later validated this website using the site http:// www.W3.org HTML validator. It was difficult at first because I discovered that there were some problems with my HTML so I had to make some other corrections. After inserting my image I changed the text explaining the process of my logo and how it was done(311 words) and then later attached it to a premade CSS. document that was provided by the instructor. I then changed both of the headings to Impact style text from the sans-serif category using the website http://www.w3schools.com/cssref/css_websafe_fonts.asp. wI was able to back up the fonts using this site but left the body copy as Times New Roman from the Modern category because it worked better with my project. I also left a comment that I knew it had been provided beforehand on the original CSS. document. I then used the color swatches and eyedropper tool to change the colors of the background, the second headers text, and also the first header. Afterwards I re-sized the webpage and took a screenshot. I then opened a new document in Photoshop 8.5x11 inches at 150 ppi resolution. I then set the rulers at .5 inches and inserted the screenshot re-sizing it ti fit within the rulers. Afterwards I saved it as a JPEG and uploaded it to my blog. Design principles used was that the text as well as my logo and header 2 were aligned. Also the use of different fonts and colors to show contrast.

Montage Project
Class: COMM 130 Sec-02 Instructor:Julie Peterson Date published: 10/24/13 Description: This project was designed to use two different photos and put them together as one picture or montage. Objectives: learn to manage Photoshop layers. Learn to blend images together smoothly, using masks. (Two or more images) Apply appropriate typography. Choosing good quality images. (Note background should be at least 16501275 pixels) Apply typography principles (titles, quotes, events or scripturesyour choice) Unifying a piece with a consistent theme Process: First I got my two pictures one of the moon that I had on my Facebook page, and another of a raven that I got off of a website. I then started a new project with the dimensions at 8.5 x 11 and placed the moon as the background image holding shift to ensure that it would not pixelate and hitting enter to give it a full-bleed effect. I then cropped the raven out of its original photo and placed it on a separate layer then from the moon layer. Afterwards I set the opacity to 26% and the filter at 74% to give it its ghostlike effect. I then made two separate text boxes with the quote being the body copy Times New Roman at 18pt font from the Oldstyle category of type. The second box is a Script font called Zapfino at 18pt font with an Arc text warp vertical style with the Blend at 50% and the horizontal distortion at 15% and vertical distortion at -10%.

Imaging Project
Class: COMM 130 Sec-02 Instructor:Julie Peterson Date published: Description: We were assigned to take a photo and then distort it using a filter. Objectives: Learn basic photography skills. Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it. Size and crop the image. 6x6 resolution 150ppi and then adjust image brightness, contrast, hue and saturation levels. Use a selection tool to isolate a portion of the image. Desaturate the selected portion of the image. Use a filter or colorize a portion of the image. Process: In this project we were required to take a picture of an image and then desaturate and also add a filter to the object. I took the picture on my Kodak digital camera, and using photoshop resized it into the 6X6 image and then desaturated the background using the quick selection tool in photoshop and afterwards added a neon glow filter to the background turning it a pale purple color. The settings for the glow filter were 2 for the size and 19 for the brightness.

Event Project
Class: COMM 130 Sec-02 Instructor:Julie Peterson Date published: 10/10/2013 Description: A design for an event flier. Objectives: Find, scan and import a high-quality image. Create a full-bleed design Use textboxes, layout and images edited in Word. Process: This is an event flier that I did for my COMM 130 advertising for a mock concert fundraiser at Idaho State University. First I scanned the picture from a guitar magazine from Wal-Mart. Then after opening it in word I re-sized it to make it a full-bleed image, and added a marker filter to the picture to give it almost a cartoonlike look. I then inserted two text boxes one on top first in Times new Roman and then another Decorative font called Chalkduster for the title. I then used Times New Roman for the body copy to better explain the fundraiser. Programs used were Microsoft Word, and the scanner machine.

Flier Project
Class: COMM 130 Sec-02 Instructor:Julie Peterson Date published: 10/02/13 Description: Using the desig principles desgin a graduate flier. Objectives: Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography. Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout. Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep links intact. Process: This is a project done in my Comm 130 Visual Media class, for a flier advertising a graduate meeting. Using the elipse and fill tools in In Design I created three separate ovals and then using the fill effects and text box option I changed the text from black to white. I then places the logo and picture resizing them using the place tool. The body copy is Times New Roman and comes from the Old style category, and the title is Apple Chancery from the script category.

Logo Designs Project

Class: COMM 130 Sec-02 Instructor: Julie Peterson Date published: 11/02/13 Description: These are some logos that I designed using adobe illustrator. There purpose was to be used as a new brand for my wordpress blog. Objectives: Create a variety of logos to fit a company or personal image. Do not imitate existing logos or use your previous designs. Use only the tools of Illustrator. (No photos on logo page) Setting up a professional display for the company. Arrange three logos on an 8.5 x 11 vertical page / .5 margins and add the company name in simple type at the top of page. Get feedback from outside sources ask ten people to select their favorite logo. Process: For the top logo I drew a series of rectangles and then using the eyedropper tool changed them different colors. I then created two forms of text the one on the top being Admiral round tip bold at 33pt font from the old style category, and the lower text being Berthold Akzidenz Grotesk at 22pt font from the new style category. I then took both texts and alligned the bottom text directly below the other. For the middle logo I typed out the phrase in Apple Chancerey from the decorative font category that was then put at 59.7pt font with a bevel on the outside of the lettering. The same was done for the second line of text but only in Bernard MT Condensed font at 23.25pt font size from the modern style category to give it contrast. I then used the shapes tool to draw a thin black rectangle, and then grouped it to a small black triangle to make it appear as a pen writing the first group of words. Continuing with the pen tool I then drew an ink bottle and quill to put at the end of the second line to show contrast of both the pens and give it a time-changing look. It looks I then alligned the texts and used the group selection tool to put them all together. The last logo took the longest by far. I first had to draw different shapes. First I drew a circle using the shape tool and then did two small circles for the eyes, drawing an extra black circle for one eye and drawing a blue star for the other eye. Then I drew a red circle for the nose, and for the mouth. The mouth I changed using the delete anchor pen tool to give the clown an excited look. I then used the artistic calligraphy brush to give him dimples. I then drew a green triangle using the pen tool and then very carefully drew yellow squares and triangles to give it a checkered look. I then went back to the shapes tool and drew a purple circle for the top of the hat afterwards I used the group selection tool to keep everything that I had done up til that point together. I then drew the neck using the shapes tool which consisted of drawing first a green triangle, two yellow right-angle triangles for the bow-tie, two circles to complete the bow tie, and then three green rectangles to complete the rest of the neck. After that I then typed my Ejournals part in Myriad pro at size 12pt from the old style category and placed it above the bow tie. I then wrote the phrases philosophy, &, and Comedy separately in Times New Roman from the modern style category and then re-sized them using the selection tool remembering to hold down shift as I did. Afterwards I used the group selection tool to group it all together and then using the selection tool re-sized it and placed the rulers so that all the logos were not touching the margins.

Stationery Project
Class: COMM 130 Sec-02 Instructor: Julie Peterson Date published: 11/09/13 Description: In this project I was asked to design stationery for a fictional business using Adobe Illustrator. Objectives: Use The basic tools of Illustrator & InDesign. Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Do not imitate existing logos or use your previous designs. (Dont use photos or live trace in your new logo) Letterhead: 8.5 x 11 (full-bleed optional, but trim only .125) Process: I first opened up a new document in adobe illustrator 8.5 x 11. Next I used the pen tool to draw three separate triangles with a golden-yellow color from my eyedropper tool. I then used the ellipse tool to draw several gray circles and then grouped them together using the group selection tool. Afterward I drew a text box and typed the Words Olympus Mountain in the Myriad Pro at 9.9pt font later changing the text to white. In the same text box I type Theme Park in Times New Roman 9.9pt font which was also later change white using the selection and eyedropper tools. I then made two text boxes and typed two gold lines and aligned them together at the top and bottom of the document. The first line I placed a little after 1.5 inches, and the bottom one I placed at 10.125 inches and then aligned with the top one using the green ruler guides that popped up to help me. After that I drew two more text boxes one for the name of the manager of the theme park and the other one for the address and contact information. The name was done in Myriad pro font 16pt and changed to gray using the type tool to select and eyedropper tools to change from black to silver-gray. The contact information was done in Times New Roman pt 12 font and also changed to gray using the type tool to first select and then use the eye dropper tool to change the color to silver-gray as well. I then used the selection tool to move the name and contact information above the top golden line at the top.

Buisness Card Project

Class: COMM 130 Sec-02 Instructor: Julie Peterson Date published: 11/09/13 Description: In this project I was asked to design a business card for a fictional business using Adobe Illustrator. Objectives: Use The basic tools of Illustrator & InDesign. Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Do not imitate existing logos or use your previous designs. (Dont use photos or live trace in your new logo) Business card: 3.5 x 2 (print above center on a vertical page) Process: I first opened a new document at 8.5x11 and then using the shapes tool I clicked on the document and then typed the dimensions for the business card twice. I then selected them using the selection tool and then using the eyedropper tool I change the color from white to light blue. I later used the selection tool and aligned both boxes together. I then used the shapes tool to draw first pillars on the box representing the back of the business card and a line in the center going vertically down. I then applied a stroke of 1-1.5 to the shapes. I then used the same effect on the box representing the front of the business card and made a complete building drawing a triangle and circle and applying a stroke of .5-1 on the shapes then positioning them to give it a Greek building look. On the front I then drew a text box and typed Olympus Mountain in Myriad pro bold at 16pt font. The words theme park and the parks operating hours were then typed in Times New Roman 12pt font with no effect added. I had originally done all of this in white but then later switched to black because it was difficult to see using the type and eyedropper tools. On the back of the card I then drew several gray circles and grouped them to give them a cloud shape adding the name of the manager and contact information in Times new Roman 8.5 font and then grouped them together with the clouds using the group selection tool. I then drew three triangles using the pen tool and grouping them together using the group selection tool. I then used the arranging tool to send them behind the cloud.
