can imagine how a visit to the Stomp can make you do two things stomping angrily through Forum Value Mall trying to find the place and on finding the place, I can easily imagine, people stomping happily. Stomp has a small alfresco section, but the rest of the ambience immediately reminded me of Richard OBriens Crystal Maze a Medieval zone, with some large induspipes. Add to this a gothic touch, and the picture would be almost complete. Almost, because music is an integral part of the pubs character as well. I loved the church-like stained glass windows featuring Ozzy, Hendrix, Morrison and so on, and the quotes by famous artists that pop up at a few places. With all of that as the backdrop, we were mildly disappointed when we walked into James Blunt crooning on the giant screen. But that was quickly redeemed with a blast of Floyd, Dire Straits, Guns N Roses, The Police, Bon Jovi and music videos we hadnt seen in a long time! A hark back to the days of my youth, but as the night progressed, the playlist became younger. Avicii woke me up to the fact that I was older. The food proved to be a good distraction, and I let the nonveg mafia croon Dont you worry child, in their own comforting way!

our favourite non-veg starter with a mildly spicy masala and finely grated coconut for texture. Baingan Burani tha was quite good and in appearance and flavour reminiscent of chaats. The Chilli Pork was the last of the starters to arrive, and except for the animal involved, was a replica of the beef dish we had eaten earlier. But we had been forewarned, so I wouldnt really complain.

though heavy, according to her, but we were preoccupied with the superb Chicken Farfalle in Makhanwala sauce thick, flavourful and an example of a happy cuisine marriage.

Entree: Appetiser: The menu is mostly Indian,

and even when they do stray towards Continental and Mexican, theres an Indian touch to it. The good news is that alcohol is relatively cheap and there are some interesting cocktail options. We tried the Purple Slurple, made from cabbage juice and white rum, and the strong and frothy Whisky Lass-y. The white wine Sangria was also different from the standard, apparently using a pulpy soft orange. The complimentary Guava Martini wasnt bad either. Solid consumption began with the Beef Chilli Fry, which was tasty well-cooked meat and spicy. A house special Ghaati Chicken Sukha was up next, and it reminded us of the coastal sukka dishes. This was

Understandably, this section has fewer options compared to the starters, but what was disappointing was that quite a few dishes were unavailable. All dishes are served with Indian bread/rice variations. We had to go with the Dal Gosht because the Dabba Gosht, Maamsam Koora and the Sri Lankan Beef Stir fry were not available. Unsurprisingly, this bland dish proved to be the least favourite. The Prawn Chilliajo made up for it with juicy, brilliantly cooked prawns in a delicious onion and pepper based thick gravy. The only vegetarian in the group tried to interest us in the Pesto Penne, which was good,

Afters: There are only four options and the house special wasnt available. The Gulab Jamun turned out to be good but not extraordinary. The shocker was the Shahi Tukra. Though they werent stingy with the milk sauce, it wasnt really rich, but the bread was the kind that could be successfully used for interrogations. You must pray that the tooth prevails! In all: I had to wonder how many people coming to Forum Value Mall would be interested in this kind of an offering. A pity because once you find your way in, the only thing that could piss you off is the lack of a toilet you have to use the malls common facilities. (minus one for that, and the missing dishes). Despite all that, I think the combination of good food, excellent ambience, and different and interesting meal-deals through the

BM SAVEUR: CUPCAKE GRANDMA

Leela Thomas, a retired teacher, decided to turn her hobby and passion into something that would help children create memories

hen architect Shema John was a young student, she was the envy of her classmates. Her mother, Leela Thomas, would send delicious baked goodies to school. Her cakes and chocolates were a hit, reminisces John. Forward to present. After Thomas retired as a school teacher in Nigeria and returned to India, she decided to help take care of grandchildren. With lots of time on hand, she started baking once again. Her grandchildren were now the envy of their classmates. As a way to help her mother channelize free time better, John decided to open a small place where kids could come in and buy cupcakes at a reasonable price. I pictured a confectionary shop with a cheery ambience where children could create delicious memories of school days and cupcakes, she says. Thus began Cupcake Noggins with the 67 year old

Thomas as its star baker. The first investment made was a heavy duty baking unit. Thomas mainly bakes cupcakes made from her recipes. My first cupcake recipe was given to me from a relative long back, says Thomas. All the rest that I now make are from my observations. It is important to understand the chemistry of baking. The rest will follow. Her small confectionary in Koramangala started off with making 1000 cupcakes a day. Knowing that cupcakes are not just lopsided school-bake affairs, Thomas incorporated art and technique to them. Most of her cupcakes are eggless, some even gluten free. But the charm lies in their appearance and names, as Thomas points out. So you have, Elvis Likes em chocolate, banana and peanut butter concoction with peanut butter frosting, then there is Chilli

Chocolate Oreo Chocolate chocolate cupcake flavoured with chilli and covered in ganache with pepper flakes, and Chocobeets, good for the heart a chocolate-beetroot combo made with the goodness of brown sugar. There are

the regular flavours like chocolate, red velvet and some unusual ones the like marshmallow fudge. (The cupcakes are priced at Rs.45 plus) A selection of 7-8 flavours is made on a day-to-day rotation. Thomas eleven year old granddaughter is her quality advisor and the first to taste the new flavours. Her inputs are incorporated with the seriousness that they deserve for she is very finicky. Improvisation is common, like the time when the granddaughter suggested pouring white chocolate on meringue. Yes, Thomas makes meringues, chocolates and now, even full cakes. Not surprisingly, two more branches have opened. For a grandma with free time Thomas has made a lot of kids happy with her cupcakes and other goodies. Jayanthi Madhukar
