LOGOS
Description: A company/individual approached me and asked if I could design their logo. They left it up to me to do some research for insight on what type of logo would best communicate their brand. They asked me to design three, completely different, variations for their consideration. Date: 11/02/13 Course/Instructor: COMM 130 section 06 Julie Peterson Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Illustrator CS6 Objectives: Create a variety of logos to fit a company or personal image. Use the basic tools of Illustator. Process: First I had to decide the business and their product. I used Illustrator to create some simple shapes to make the logos for Evangelines Boutique to use. I focused mainly on the typography and using that to display a good representation of the business. After making three logos I turned it in for peer review. For the second logo down I added more with the dashed lines to make it not so plain but still simple. Then I printed it off for the final review.

WEB PAGE
Description: A potential employer requested a web page of one of your logos I made earlier (Designs by Carissa). Along with a description of the design process that demonstrates basic HTML and CSS skills. Date: 11/23/13 Course/Instructor: COMM 130 section 06 Julie Peterson Program(s)/Tools: TextWrangler, Photoshop Objectives: Create a web page for a business using HTML to display a logo and content. Acquire a working knowledge of HTML and basic understanding of CSS. Process: For this webpage I first had to learn how to use HTML to make the basic structure of my website. This included the title, headings, logo, unordered list, paragraphs, links, and image tags. Then I used CSS to decorate the page. This included adding color, moving the text over/aligned, changing font families, adding borders and background colors. Once I finished this process I took it in for a peer review, in which they told me to better align my list elements. I editted the padding so they were all on one side, and the image floating on the left. I also made the text of the paragraph different from the list elements to add contrast. Then I finished by printing it out for the final review.

BUSINESS CARD
Description: Ive been asked to design a new logo and business card for my company. I want the customer to connect that a business card and letterhead belongs to the same company. Date: 11/09/13 Course/Instructor: COMM 130 section 06 Julie Peterson Program(s)/Tools: Illustrator CS6 and InDesign CS6 Objectives: Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead. Process: I created the logo by using the companys name and used the letters to create a simple logo using the rectangle tool and type tool. I then used that logo in both the business card and stationery and created a common theme with the stripes and colors. I created a draft and turned it into my peers for critique. They told me on the business card, I made the name of the company/font size smaller so it wasnt so squished in the borders I made. Then I printed the business card and stationery on portfolio paper for the final draft.

BROCHURE
Description: My employer wanted me to design a full-color, folding brochure to help promote the company product, service or location. Brochures come in all sizes and shapes. Any duplex (two-sided) folding document can be considered a brochure. Therefore the size parameters for this project are wide open. The purpose of my brochure may be informational or advertising. Date: 12/07/13 Course/Instructor: COMM 130 section 06 Julie Peterson Program(s)/Tools: InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator CS6 Objectives: Set up align a two-sided, folded document. Learn how to to wrap text around an image. Use paragraph styles in InDesign. Process: I took one of the layouts we learned called the Offset Brochure in InDesign. I found some animal images that would fit my product and posted them where I thought they would work. I took the tiger image in Photoshop and cut it out so I can put that in my brochure to demonstrate the text wrap in InDesign. In my peer review I decided to move the website that was originally in the front to the back along with the logo. I then saved brochure and printed it double sided as the finish.

MONTAGE
Description: Im in charge of creating a new and fresh inspirational poster using a composite of images and type. I created an inspirational montage by using a layer mask to blend images. I used some images from the Internet to create this montage. Date: 10/26/13 Course/Instructor: COMM 130 section 06 Julie Peterson Program(s)/Tools: Google Images, Photoshop CS6 Objectives: I learned how to mask objects in Photoshop. I learned how to use photos from the internet (with citing) to create an image. I learned how to use text in Photoshop Process: I first found my images from the Internet using Google Images. I put them together in Photoshop using the masking tool to blend them together. I filtered the background Christmas tree image using some desaturation so its not as bold as the other emphasizes. I took the draft to class to be critiqued. For the final I flipped on of my images and added a rectangle behind the text so its easier to read over the crazy background. Lastly I printed the montage on portfolio paper.

IMAGING
Description: I am applying for a job at a photography studio and I need to demonstrate good photography and image editing skills. I submitted a good quality photo with some specific editing techniques. Date: 10/18/13 Course/Instructor: COMM 130 section 06 Julie Peterson Program(s)/Tools: Canon PowerShot Camera, Photoshop CS6 Objectives: I learned how to better use Photoshop for basic editting with filters and how to isolate an object and specifically edit it. I learned some simple photography tips for taking better composited pictures. I learned how to resize and crop images, along with change their resolution. Process: For this project I first had to take a camera out to the gardens on campus for some good pictures. After taking some I reviewed what I took and chose my favorite to edit. After playing around with the Photoshops editting options I chose to do a decolorization filter with an orange tint and very slightly desaturated the background. I took the draft photo into class to be critiqued. After that I decided to add a little bit contrast to make it not look so flat, along with adding more color/saturation/hue to the leaf so its not too out of place with the background but still was the main focus. I finalized the photo editting by resizing it to 6x6 inches for print.

EVENT AD
Description: My employer put me in charge of a news flier. He gave me the information, a logo and one image to use. He asked me to create a new layout that will be attractive and more inviting to read. Date: 10/12/13 Course/Instructor: COMM 130 section 06 Julie Peterson Program(s)/Tools: Microsoft Word Objectives: That even though this was created through Word, the number of things you can do on that platform really surprised me.Be careful when scanning an image from a magazine. Sometimes doesnt have the best resolution. Mine looks like it has a bad quality. Dont be afraid to play around with alignment. I used it to contain some text boxes and I really like the look of it. Process: First of all I needed to draft out ideas. We brought in our first draft into class to get feedback. Right away I noticed the idea was similar to my Flier. So I scratched out the first draft and started the process of drawing drafts and playing around with design to have a better ad. I feel as though this design has more PARC-F and interesting factors than my other draft. Lastly we had to print off the final copy and turn it into class.

FLIER
Description: As a student of BYU-I, I was asked to help sponsor an all-day daycare for families who need it and to raise money for the school. I was asked to design a flyer (color) to promote the event. The budget is tight, and the boss doesnt want to pay an outside firm to do artwork. The only computer software at my disposal is Microsoft Word. Date: 10/05/13 Course/Instructor: COMM 130 section 06 Julie Peterson Program(s)/Tools: InDesign CS6 Objectives: Apply the design principles and the style of typography. Use the InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout. Create a project folder with images, logo, and InDesign document so the links arent messed up. Process: First I made four drafts/sketches on paper to figure out how I wanted the layout to turn out. Next I picked my favorite sketch and made it into InDesign. After consulting with my peers, I revised my draft into a final copy that fit best with the description. Lastly, I printed my final copy for completion.
