Cyproheptadine Brand name: 1. Periactin 2. Peritol Cyproheptadine is a first-generation antihistamine with additional anticholinergic, antiserotonergic, appetite stimulant, and local anesthetic properties. Cyproheptadine - after oral ingestion, peak plasma levels occur after 13 hours. Its half-life is approximately 8 hours.

1. Cyproheptadine is used to treat allergic reactions (specifically hay fever). 2. A long term use of the drug can stimulate the appetite and may lead to weight gain, which is helpful for underweight people. 3. Cyproheptadine hydrochloride has been found to improve sleep, calmness, as well as mood and energy levels, and to improve both negative and (sometimes even) positive psychotic symptoms in chronic schizophrenics who do not respond (either completely or sufficiently) to other therapies. 4. Cyproheptadine is used as an adjunct to antipsychotic treatment in patients with schizophrenia and an improvement in negative symptoms can be seen. 5. Cyproheptadine may be helpful to treat schizophrenia 6. Cyproheptadine may improve akathisia in patients on antipsychotic medications.
