10-16-2010 11:30 AM The first letter usually denotes the actual insulation system applied to the windings.

The second letter denotes the design temperature rise based on industry insulation class limits.

For example the H/B is a machine with a class H insulation applied to the winding but has a design temperature rise of 60 degrees C which is the specified maximum tmep rise for class B insulation.

Hope that helps,

11-03-2010 12:07 AM Actually, The insulation class decide the quality of Generator Winding and the temp rise is related to generator output rating. And if the same winding insulation class but the less temp rise, then the life of the winding is longer, the life of generator is longer. But the price is higher. If we reduce the temp rise of the generator, it could be called Oversized Generator. H insulation class is higher and better then F insulation class. Hi,

The first digit is the thermal limit of the insulation/generator which will allow it to run a predetermined number of hours statistically without failure of the insulation.

The second digit is what temp it is expected to operate at the suppliers rating (usually less than H).

H = 125 degC over 40 degC = 165 degC F = 105 degC over 40 degC = 145 degC B = 80 degC over 40 degC = 120 degC

If you have H/H (125/125) the insulation will degrade quicker than an H/B (125/80). So how to apply this, well for instance H/H for standby and H/F or H/B for cont. The bigger the diffence is, eg H/B, the larger and greater the oversizing of the generator

09-08-2011 11:45 AM Expanding on Pierre's comments:

The temperature rating he describes is a continuous rating. Manufacturers are allowed to operate alternators in standby applicaitons at up to 30C higher temperature rise.

Roughly speaking regardless of the rating of the insulation, the life of the machine will be approximately the same, as long as the insulation rating and operation/use does not cause operating temperature exceeding the temperature rating of the insulation.

As Pierre notes, when you apply an alternator at a lower temperature rise than its rating, you are effectively oversizing the alternator, which will result in longer life, better short circuit performance, better motor starting performance, and better voltage waveform when operating non-linear loads. In general, since the alternator is a small percentage of the cost of the generator set, it's a good practice to oversize a bit...for example using class H insulation with a class F temperature rise. This makes the alternator perform more like the utility, so there is less potential for problems with operating loads.

Note also that the insulation class does not imply quality in any way: You can have poor quality class H insulation systems that will not be as reliable or give as good life as class F. So, you need to look to other factors to get to whether or not the insulation system is one with acceptable quality.

09-20-2011 07:48 AM You need to look at the nameplate of the generator to determine the class of insulation that was used on the windings. Then refer to the instruction book or other documentation to see if there were any guidelines provided as to the safe operating temperature. Baring that, you can use the insulation class to back calculate the safety temperature by taking the temperature rating of the insulation (e.g. -- Class H is good for 220C) and deducting the maximum allowed ambient of 40C and the hottest spot allowance (it's 30C for transformers, I don't remember offhand what the allowance for generators is); the resulting temperature is the maximum allowed operating temperature and a shutdown would logically be set just beyond this by a sensor tolerance, say 5C.

If you're already shutting down now, I'd also look at what you can do to help either unload the unit or improve its cooling: ensure all area ventilation is running, any air filters are clean, no dampers are shut, there isn't excessive dirt in the unit, etc. The other thing to check is that the relay that's getting the temperature reading is in calibration.

Remember, temperature is the enemy of insulation and attacks it by driving out the inherant moisture that needs to be there for it to work correctly. The normal rule of thumb is that for every 10C rise in operating temperature, the resulting life is reduced by half. Message 9 of 10 (213 Views)

09-20-2011 10:32 PM This specification ( for instance class H with class B rise) became common from my memory starting in the mid to late 1960's, well before computer analysis of hot spots in winding design and VPI encapsulation ( a manufacturing method) were common.

Many independent consulting engineers and other specifiers felt it would extend the life of a generator insulation system for motors and generators because most of the major electrical machine manufacturers in the USA had presented a variety of technical papers and published data that purported to show, based on laboratory testing a 10 C increase in internal operating temperature of the insulating material above its base design temperature rating resulted in a 50% decrease in insulating material life. This premise was and is in my opinion significantly flawed, because it completely ignores the more significant insulation degrediation factors of atmospheric contaminants, moisture, dust, salts, oil, antifreeze, chemicals, etc that occur in real machine operation.

It is my opinion based on years of experience and client feedback that this requirement has never extended any electrical machine's life or overhaul frequency in the past 20 years or so, assuming the basic NEMA insulation class is "F".

Sorry for the detailed wording, but this key to the answer.

09-06-2011 11:29 AM Hi CAT expertsl, i intend to install 11 gensets for my plan as followings : - 07 gensets of 1600kva prime/400V - 04 gensets of 2000kva prime/400V - These gensets will be synchronized within 15 seconds then they will be stepped up to 22KV by step-up transformers 22/0.4 kV with corresponding capacity accordingly for transmission and then be downed step to feed LV load So my questions are : - is synchronizing 11 gensets like this at same time OK ? i worry busbar in synchronize panels are so big ! - is it practical to synchronize them and load within 15 seconds ? - is there any problem in case we step up to 22KV for transmission and down step to 380V for load ? does whole electrical system operate stably ? Pls advise Thanks Message 1 of 12 (1,087 Views) Reply 1 Kudos mikel Trusted Contributor

09-07-2011 12:38 PM Well, you are certainly stretching the envelope here, That will be a huge bus at 400V and the amount of time for the number of units is technically possible in the best cases, but it will likely not be repeatable or reliable.

How many transformers are you looking at having, how will you deal with the first unit to close for inrush? Maybe if you did up a quick one line diagram of what you're currently planning you may get some better answers.

09-08-2011 11:53 AM You'd be better off to provide a transformer for each generator set and parallel at 22kV so the bus bracing can be adequately designed.

If everything is designed and adjusted correctly, there will be no stability problem. I have seen systems as large as 200MW operate successfully with this type of design. Message 3 of 12 (1,019 Views) Reply 0 Kudos karu2275243 Visitor

that what can do: 1) first of all if u need that short time 15 seconds, u have to use turbine air starting motor (compressed air system) instead the normal electrical. then the control should depends on first genset to start the first unit to be on line. 2) Make the synchronizing to be done at the low voltage side using PLC without busbar collecting the power from the generators through one step up transformer for each two gensets instead of one. 3) Then collecting these transformers output to Meduim Voltage Switchgear through Load Break Switch, out of this Switchgear use Circuit Breaker(s) (with enough protection relays) to feed step-up transformer(s) to bring power to the high voltage overhead line(s). this is the most economical & reliable way, i already use before.

any comment please don't hesitate to contact me.

09-20-2011 07:51 AM Hi. I have succesfully completed a project 5 years ago using 15 x 2000 kVA 3516's to operate in either parallel to the grid or island modes. We used 1 x 33kV transformer per generator and synchronised on the LV. That way the LV fault levels are realistic and kept the magnetising current reasonable for one genset to endure. Black start with a pause for oil pressure was approximately 20 seconds to first ACB close. The other 14 synchronised approximately 10 seconds later (on steady load conditions, 6 deg window). I don't recall the system ever failing to synch first go.

09-20-2011 08:36 AM From the mechanical side of things, if you are going to start, synch, and rapid load engines, I would advise you have oil prelube, oil preheating, and heating (with possibly some precirculation) on the cooling water. My experience with engines that are required to do this type of duty is that reliability is poor and the damages that do occur are expensive to the engines and the turbochargers.

From the electrical side, I tend to agree with the poster who suggested individual stepups for each generator. It enhances reliability and the switchgear and bus will be a heck of a lot less copper. It should decrease the risk that a single point of failure will disable the whole system. Message 9 of 12 (439 Views) Reply 0 Kudos Coot-WGC Visitor

09-20-2011 09:47 AM Obviously, the dynamics of the engine/generator sets will determine the ability to synchronize 11 units to a bus in 15 seconds or less. I have commissioned one job with 14 CAT's online in 18 seconds, with at least 11 in the first 15 seconds. KW/KVAR sharing components and synchronizer selection will all be critaical, as well as proper system tuning.

Introduction of the transformer to the system may significantly impact the operation depending on when in the sequence the transformer is excited.

09-20-2011 07:13 AM We had a similar problem, but cleared it by changing the filters, when we changed the oil. When it happens now, we change the filters at the first sign that pressure is going over normal state. This allows us to run with out changing oils for longer periods. You could also try flushing out the system, before you put in new oil, as some times you get build-ups, that normal oil flow doesn't remove. This build-up usually occurs where there is a chance of settling, when the system is not in use. Message 6 of 8 (211 Views) Reply 0 Kudos DragonRailways Visitor

09-20-2011 07:18 AM FYI: All of our Cat equipment is probably older than what many dealers have on hand now, since we seldom scrap, junk, or salvage Cat equipment. We also have Cat diesels installed in some of our older EMD GPs, using Cats as replacement for GM diesels, because Cats offer less polution, than GM EMD diesels. It is our older uints which have had pressure problems in the past; but now we don't have that problem.

Have a great Cat day. Message 7 of 8 (209 Views) Reply 0 Kudos JAMES007 Contributor
