Organized by Asian Agri-History Foundation: Uttarakhand Chapter, G B Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar, U S Nagar, Uttarakhand

At College of Agriculture G B Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar,U S Nagar, Uttarakhand

BACKGROUND History of human civilization is the history of development. Ever since stone age man has made tremendous progress in almost all stages of life. Over the centuries, innovations coupled with mans search for excellence and creativity has made such developments possible. Even today, a few communities around the globe who practice their indigenous knowledge, local innovations and creativity for their day to day life. Based on their rich ecological knowledge, they manage and conserve natural resources and biodiversity. Conserving natural resources and maintaining biodiversity to achieve sustainable agriculture by the communities take place through their traditional ecological knowledge, collective decision making process and local democratic institutions. Besides all these, peoples belief, taboos and customs facilitate sustainable farming and protect the environment. Their traditional agricultural systems are based on rich indigenous ecological knowledge gained over generations. The field preparation, choice of crop, varieties and season of sowing, intercultural operations, nutrient management, soil and water conservation, eco-friendly pest and diseases control measures, harvest and storage methods showcase their rich traditional knowledge on sustainable agriculture and natural resource management techniques. However, ever increasing population pressure necessitating increased food production tends to deplete the natural resources at faster rate and foster adverse ecological issues. In agriculture, the market-led innovations have frequently generated processes and products that affect the environment and put sustainable development at risk. Therefore, time-tested practices of traditional agriculture need to be revisited, documented and validated, and further refined for wider use for sustainable growth of agriculture. Local farmers participatory research and extension activities need to be initiated by the government developmental departments and research institutions to facilitate and foster validation and adoption of local innovations. Traditional homestead agroforestry systems need to be scientifically validated and promoted among the younger generation. Large number of indigenous food crops need to be identified , analyzed for their nutritional status and medicinal purposes and to be popularized among the younger growers. Traditional crops and knowledge gardens need to be established and maintained by the local community. Keeping above in view, Uttarakhand Chapter of Asian -Agri History Foundation at GBPUA&T, Pant nagar has decided to organize the National Seminar on Innovation in Traditional Agriculture. ABOUT AAHF The Asian Agri History Foundation (AAHF), a non-profit trust, was established and registered in 1994 to facilitate dissemination of information on agricultural history to promote research on sustainable agriculture in the South and Southeast Asia region. This region had generally provided food security to its population for several millennia, with only occasional famines in few limited pockets . Farmers in the region had evolved some of the most sustainable agricultural management technologies suitable for different agro-eco regions. In recent years, however, South and Southeast Asia have often been

projected as food-deficient technologies which have been adopted over large areas. Ironically, in the past few years, the sustainability of agriculture by following modern technologies has been questioned with good reasons. How can we make the agriculture in South and Southeast Asia sustainable? The trustees of AAHF believe that there is great deal to be learnt from the traditional wisdom and the indigenous time-tested technologies that have sustained the farmers of South and Southeast Asia in the past. In view of this, AA HF envisages To disseminate information on the history of agriculture in the South and Southeast Asia region. To stimulate interest in research on the history of agriculture in Asia with a special focus on South and Southeast Asia.

The NATIONAL SEMINAR is being organized to Understand changes in agricultural practices over period of time by farmers. Evaluate technologies leading to prosperous and sustainable agriculture. Encourage validation of indigenous traditional knowledge, and Preserve traditional input resources for functional integrity.
