LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE Your Name: Allison Okurowski Title of Lesson: Lets Talk About the Sun Grade:

5 STANDARDS Next Generation Science Standard 5-ESS1-2. Represent data in graphical displays to reveal patterns of daily changes in length and direction of shadows, day and night, and the seasonal appearance of some stars in the night sky. Common Core State Standard CCSS.Math.Content.5.MD.A.1 Convert among different-sized standard measurement units within a given measurement system (e.g., convert 5 cm to 0.05 m), and use these conversions in solving multi-step, real world problems. LESSON SUMMARY/OVERVIEW Lesson will cover the following topics: How the sun heats the earth How the seasons change How the time of day affects shadows Sun safety UV index It is recommended that this lesson be started in the beginning of the day. Students will watch Bill Nye season 1 episode 15 Seasons and complete worksheet throughout video. Students will then complete Me and My Shadow activity (worksheet). This will require students to go outside every couple of hours to measure their shadow. In between shadow measurements, students will use sunsafetyalliance.org and weather.weatherbug.com to learn about sun safety and UV index. These websites can be explored individually on class computers or with a teacher guiding students through the website by projecting it on a screen. OBJECTIVES SWBAT Understand why seasons change SWBAT Describe how the sun heats the earth SWBAT Collect meaningful data and graph results SWBAT Comprehend sun safety topics and UV index ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION Students will have Bill Nye Seasons video worksheet completed Students will contribute meaningful input in whole class discussion on video contents Students will complete Me and My Shadow activity and show completed graph PREREQUISITE KNOWLEDGE Earth has 4 seasons Students are able to take measurements and record data on a graph Students have some internet navigation experience MATERIALS Projector and computer Screen or whiteboard Bill Nye Seasons link Bill Nye Seasons worksheet Me and My Shadow Worksheet Chalk Colored pencils Graph Paper Internet access for sun safety links VOCABULARY/KEY WORDS Seasons 4 equal subdivisions of the year that are characterized by changes in weather, hours of daylight, and how living things interact with the environment. Earths Axis The imaginary line that goes through the North and South Pole. It is on a tilt of 23 degrees

UV Index unit of measurement that tells us how much ultraviolet radiation from the sun is hitting the earth in a particular place Equinox A day twice a year when there are equal hours of daylight and night TEACHING PROCEDURES Teacher will play Bill Nye Seasons episode for students Students will complete worksheet while watching the video Teacher will pare up students in groups of two and lead them outside to the playground/blacktop Students will begin Me and My Shadow activity and record data Teacher will bring students back inside have students explore weather.weatherbug.com and sunsafetyalliance.org (websites can be explored individually on class computers or with a teacher guiding students through the website by projecting it on a screen. Teacher will bring students back outside to measure shadows again (1 hour later) and repeat this step every hour on the hour for the next 3 hours (5 hours/data points total) Students will complete Me and My Shadow worksheet with their completed graph and data RESOURCES Bill Nye Season 1 Episode 15, Seasons: http://gorillavid.in/acnvnwuleo8m Me and My Shadow Worksheet: http://cancer.dartmouth.edu/melanoma_skin/documents/Me_My_shadow.pdf Sun Safety Website: http://www.sunsafetyalliance.org/bare_facts.html Weatherbug/UV Index Website: http://weather.weatherbug.com/AZ/Phoenix-weather/uv-index.html?zcode=z6286 WAYS OF THINKING CONNECTION Systems thinking is a way of understanding multiple systems and how they affect each other. My lesson connects to this because it explains how astronomy affects earths seasons which in turn affect biological processes in nature.
