An appositive is a phrase which provides additional details about a noun or pronoun in a sentence.

Although it is most common for an appositive to interrupt a sentence, sometimes the appositive phrase begins or ends the sentence. When it does, it is separated from the rest of the sentence by a single comma. For example, the appositive phrase is bolded in the following sentence:
