Standard operating procedures with the following additions: a. Except as indicated below, ATS will assign a temporary discrete code for each flight sector for aircraft operating in controlled airspace, and for aircraft participating in Surveillance Information Service SIS!. b. "nless advised otherwise by AT#, pilots of $ode %A or $ode S transponder e&uipped aircraft operating in Australian airspace must activate their transponders, and where a $ode # capability is also available it must be activated simultaneously with $ode %A. '(TE: )ilots must ensure that transponders and A*S+, transmitters are activated and the altitude function is selected as: -. )rimary radar coverage only exists within ./ '$ of ma0or airports and the remainder of the ATS surveillance system relies on SS1 transponder and A*S+, transmitter information, and 2. T#AS relies on transponder information for its pilot alerting and collision avoidance functions. c. 3hen operating in Australian airspace, or on reaching the Australian 4I1 boundary if inbound to Australia, pilots of $ode %A transponder e&uipped aircraft must s&uaw5 the assigned temporary discrete code for that flight sector, or if not assigned a temporary discrete code, the appropriate non6discrete code from the following listing, unless advised otherwise by ATS: -. #ivil flights in classes 7A8, 7#8 and 7*8 airspace, or I41 flights in #lass 7E8 airspace9%///. e. A pilot must not operate the identification function S)I! unless re&uested by AT#.

f. 4lights assigned a temporary discrete SS1 code by ATS must s&uaw5 that code until termination of the flight sector, unless advised otherwise by ATS. If not assigned a discrete code, the appropriate generic code must be used. g. A pilot operating a $ode %A:# transponder at a radar controlled aerodrome must: -. (n departure, leave the transponder selected to STA'*,; until entering the departure runway< and 2. (n arrival, select the transponder to STA'*,; or (44 as soon as practicable after landing. h. A pilot operating a $ode S transponder at a radar controlled aerodrome must: -.
