Introduction
This book is a compilation of every map produced for the Graduate Housing Studio. Over the course of our Studio, these maps were created in order to assist us in our research. Our work was divided into several stages, beginning with examining existing housing conditions for graduate students at Florida State University. Once these existing conditions were examined, we analyzed the data through GIS. This analysis, combined with results from our survey and community engagement activities, helped us attempt to identify appropriate parcels for new graduate housing. Finally, we determined that the redevelopment of Alumni Village would be the best option going forward. The site plans we created feature our ideas after careful consideration of our research and analysis. Most of the data layers were obtained from Tallahassee-Leon County GIS. Some maps required simple symbolization, while others required complex GIS tools. For example, the Where Graduate Students Live map was created from a spreadsheet containing graduate student addresses from the Fall 2011 semester (all data was anonymous and confidential). These addresses were geocoded and then a frequency tool was used within ArcGIS to determine which addresses housed more than one student. The circles were symbolized according to the number of students at that particular address. In the Top Apartments Where Graduate Students Live map, we took the data from the location map and researched which apartment complexes existed at the top 10 addresses. The site plan layers were superimposed on aerial views of the existing area of Alumni Village. Careful consideration was given to building footprints in order to match building needs and planning principles we determined. We hope that the provided maps and site plans will help paint a picture of graduate housing in Tallahassee and begin a conversation about how to better house graduate students in the future.
