In many ways, we are beginning a new era at the College of Law.

As the incoming Interim Dean, I want to update you on the changes we are experiencingsome exciting and some quite challengingand to in ite you to renew or expand your engagement with the law school, its students, and your fellow alumni.

At our commencement on !ay "#, we honored the graduation of the College$s centennial class. %he formal anni ersary of our first graduation is &une ', but we will be celebrating throughout the next academic year, beginning with our Centennial (ymposium and )ala on (eptember *#. Loo+ for more information on those e ents in the months to come.

%he Class of *#", includes some of the most talented, di erse and dedicated graduates in the College$s history. Collecti ely, they de oted nearly '-,### hours of olunteer community ser ice during their three years of law school through clinical and pro bono placements. .e fielded more external competition teams than in any prior year, gi ing our students aluable hands/ on training, and our team won the best brief award at the 0ational !oot Court Competition in 0ew 1or+. !ore students than e er too+ concentrated courses in legal drafting, litigation and transactional s+ills. %hat lea es them superbly prepared for a wide range of legal or law/related careers.

1et this class still needs our help. %he mar+et for new lawyers is 2ust beginning to reco er, and fran+ly, many of our graduates are still loo+ing for 2obs. .e are doing e erything we can to connect our students with potential employers, and to expand the range of opportunities for them to consider. 3ut you can help as well. If one of our graduates reaches out to you for ad ice, please gi e a few minutes of your time. If you +now of employment opportunities we may ha e o erloo+ed, in 4tah or elsewhere, please contact our 5rofessional De elopment 6ffice and let them +now.

Less than a month after the historic centennial commencement, on &une ', we bro+e ground on the College$s fourth physical 7home.8 9If you cannot identify each of the three buildings in which the law school has been located to date, the others are described in a colorful historical portrait in the centennial issue of :es )estae, which we hope you will de our co er to co er.;

!any of you ha e already seen our presentations showing 2ust how exciting our new building will be< state/of/the/art training facilities to prepare lawyers with s+ills as well as +nowledge= spaces for collaborati e research and clinical education= ad anced but flexible learning technology and a library integrated throughout the building= and superior accessibility to students, employees, and isitors to address a full range of disabilities. %han+s to a recent grant from the Alternati e >isions ?und of the Chicago Community %rust, ours will also be one of the most sustainable law school buildings in the world, which will sa e us money on operating costs for the life of the building and honor our commitment to conser ing natural resources for future generations.

If you ha e not had the chance to see one of these presentations and would li+e to do so, please let me +now. I would be happy to schedule one for any si@e group, at indi idual law offices or in other settings.

3ut I want to emphasi@e what I ha e from the day I was as+ed to ser e as Interim Dean. It$s not 2ust about the building. It$s about doing a better 2ob of educating the next generation of lawyers. It$s about more engaged and more rele ant scholarship by our faculty, and increasing community ser ice by our students, faculty, and alumni. .hile we continue to put the finishing touches on the building design and o ersee its construction, we are turning our attention to how we will use the new building to do a better 2ob as educators, scholars, and community ser ants.

%o achie e these goals, the faculty is in the midst of a comprehensi e e aluation of our academic curriculum, our clinical and pro bono placements, and our other programs to determine what s+ills we teach well, where we might impro e or refine our programs, and what is missing. .e do not intend to fix programs that are not bro+en, or to chase e ery idea that has been proposed as a 7solution8 to the challenges facing legal education. .e do intend to e aluate each potential solution carefully, and to adopt those that ma+e the most sense for our students.

And in doing so, we welcome your input. 6ur future graduates will be your future employees, colleagues, and partners in pre enting or resol ing legal conflicts. 1ou ha e as much of an interest as we do in ensuring that those

aspiring lawyers recei e the best training possible. 5lease let me +now what you thin+ we are doing well in preparing them to practice law, and what you thin+ we can do better.

It$s also not 2ust about the law school. Although our main incenti e for building a new facility is to fulfill our immediate educational mission, we also want our new home to ser e the needs of the broader 4tah legal community. .e in ite members of the 4tah bench and bar to consider how the new facility might be used for CLA programs and other trainings, and for other meetings and e ents. In addition to our top floor conference center, the building will ha e practice courtrooms and a range of other flexible s+ills training and meeting rooms for you to use.

&ust as our students and recent graduates need your help, so do we in order to build a facility designed to train your future colleagues, to ser e the needs of 4tah$s legal community and the community at large, and to de elop the programs necessary to do so. 1ou can help by contributing to our 3uilding &ustice ?undincluding our )reen 3uilding ?und in which you can double the alue of your donation until we reach our BC##,### matching challenge grant from the Alternati e >isions ?und. A growing number of law firms, indi idual alumni, and other law school friends ha e already gi en generously to this effort, and we than+ you sincerely for that help. If you ha e not done so and want to learn the many ways you can help, please go to 3uilding&ustice.law.utah.edu.

At the same time, we need to maintain momentum in all of our ongoing programs. 1ou can also help by contributing to student scholarships, the law library, each of our centers of academic excellence, the 5ro 3ono Initiati e, or the Dean$s ?und. ?or a full range of opportunities to help, please isit law.utah.eduDgi e

6ur other ma2or milestone, of course, is the departure of Dean Eiram Chodosh, who has ser ed the College of Law with great ision, energy, and distinction for se en years, and who now mo es on to become 5resident of Claremont !cFenna College in California. I want to than+ Eiram personally for all he has done for us, and wish him our best in his challenging but exciting new assignment. At the same time, I assure you that e eryone at the College of Law is committed to building on the momentum Eiram has pro ided.

As we all mo e forward in our efforts to build a new facility and a better program for our students and our community, please feel free to contact me at any time with your questions and your ideas. I loo+ forward to wor+ing with all of you.

(incerely,

3ob Adler
