Before the event) each team su+mits 'esign an' cost reports to S-. officials% The 'esign reports are ju'ge' on originality an' innovation) particularly on improvements to previously entere' cars% 4n a''ition) the quality of engineering 'esign is ju'ge' for the: suspension an' +ra*e system) power train) structural 'esign) craftsmanship) operator comfort) feasi+ility for mass pro'uction) servicea+ility) an' flotation an' water propulsion% The cost reports are ju'ge' on prototype cost) manufacturing cost) 'ocumentation) an' an optional overview% S-. officials also loo* for optimi6ation of cost% -fter the reports are su+mitte') the cars are su+jecte' to a plethora of tests 'esigne' to push the vehicles to the limit% The cars are first thoroughly inspecte' for safety concerns) an' then are evaluate' in a num+er of qualifying tests% These tests inclu'e: top spee') acceleration) +ra*ing) lane maneuvera+ility) water maneuvera+ility) tractor pull) hill clim+) mu' +og) roc* crawl an' suspension% The centerpiece of the competition is the four hour en'urance race% The cars race on the rough2terrain of the en'urance trac*) competing to see who can complete the most laps in four hours) or to simply see how long the cars can last% 4t is therefore important to have a car +uilt long +efore the competition) to completely twea* the components an' prevent any part failures%
