    The Maurya Empire was a large and powerful empire in ancient India that existed from 322 BCE to 185 BCE. It was established by Chandragupta Maurya and reached its peak under the rule of Ashoka the Great. At its height, the empire stretched across large parts of modern day India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh. Ashoka pursued an active foreign policy to unite the empire, but abandoned it after a costly war with the state of Kalinga. Under the Mauryas, slavery developed rapidly and Buddhism flourished, especially under the patronage of Ashoka, though this strained the economy. The empire had a modern administrative system but opposition arose against Ashoka, and the empire declined after his death.
