COMPLETED PROJECTS 2013
The Kaslo & District Arena Board is really pleased to an-
nounce the completion of the Columbia Basin Trust spon-
sored improvements to the public areas: the meeting room
has been sound proofed and is a much more comfortable
room for numerous people to be in; the updated kitchen,
including appliances, is sparkling clean and ready to be rent-
ed for family reunions, birthday parties...all manner of gath-
erings; and both the viewing room bathrooms have been
painted and renovated to include a baby change space on
the counters, making them more useful to the public. All this
was courtesy of a CBT grant and the enthusiasm of Lynda La-
Fleur who worked so hard
for us.
You may also have no-
ticed that the last nishing
touches to dressing rooms
1- 4 have been complet-
ed. Showers stalls (all
dressing rooms) have been
tiled and the players entry
has been timber-dressed,
thanks to the generous
donation of Joe Johnston.
The added shelving, reno-
vated cabinets, new sinks
and mirrors have all been
updated and repainted
with special thanks due to
Kaslo Front Street Market,
Kaslo Building Supplies,
Kaslo Home Hardware
and Hamill Creek Timber-
homes for sponsoring the
supplies. We were able to
stretch the dollars to the
max, thanks to a ton of
volunteer time donated
by Glen McRae.
State of the Arena
Kaslo
The Kaslo & District Arena Board is well
into its third grant in two years, and is very
proud of the improvements made to the
arena. Though we have had some disap-
pointments recently when we learned that
our vision would cost way more than we
had to spend, we have also learned some
very important information about our
building and the state of our equipment.
The arena board is committed to main-
taining the present structure and to con-
tinuing to replace the infrastructure as
needed. In the next several years we an-
ticipate a minimum of another $100,000
worth of infrastructure to replace the 38
year old outside condenser and renovate or
more appropriately, rebuild the concession.
We have a need for more hands on
board members who are committed to
the arena, and who are willing to share
their professional expertise, knowledge
and energy to help with the ongoing proj-
ects and maintenance. If you would like
to help out in any way, please contact

I would like to thank all the board mem-
bers and especially Bryan and Ron from the
Curling Club for helping to unify the efforts
of both boards to improve the Kaslo recre-
ation complex, and to Karma who has per-
sistently kept us on track to maintain and
improve all the functions of the arena. No

UNFINISHED PROJECTS 2013
A year and a half ago the Kaslo & District Arena Board be-
gan taking steps towards making summer ice after a Europe-
an resident, with a connection to Kaslo, had requested the
opportunity to run a summer hockey school from our facility.
Dreaming of a hockey academy in Kaslo, we talked with our
ice technicians, developed a plan, and wrote for a grant. We
were successful in our application for funding for two new
condensers, updating the dressing rooms, and replacing the
venting for the grill in the concession... all projects geared to
serving our new summer school market in a shiny updated
space. We began to move forward, hiring two independent
professional engineers one to assess the arenas ice plant
equipment and another to assess the concession grill and
venting. It quickly became apparent that the original estimate
of $94,600 for the summer ice and concession venting proj-
ects was out by nearly $450,000, unreachable by our present
board in the time frame allotted.
Armed with our new knowledge, we have identied the
38 year old chiller as the ice plant component that should be
replaced. We are grateful to our current granting authority for
amending the grant to assist in the purchase of the chiller,
which we have to install by the spring deadline.
The engineering consultant who assessed the grill and
venting recommended immediate removal of the venting if we
could not afford to replace it right away. He basically said the
grill and vent was a re trap, and this was conrmed by the re
inspector. The KDA board took the steps necessary to keep the
recreation complex safe and our insurance valid, by removing
the grill and vent. Luckily for us all, Rose, to her credit has put
up with these changes and has devised new ways to create the
same menu that we depend upon. We compliment Rose for
being part of the planning for the concession. Though aware
that concession revenues are down and that Rose has indi-
cated that she may retire soon, the arena board is committed
to the concept that a concession is vital to the complex. Our
plan is to pursue the electrical rewiring and renovation of the
concession and the upgrade of the ice plant and have all nec-
essary quotes in place so we are able to move on a new grant
opportunity quickly.

A HEARTFELT THANK-YOU to all who responded to the
call after Maggie and I slid off the road on Saturday eve-
ning. Balfour search and rescue, Nelson and Kaslo RCMP,
Western Auto, and Nelson Ambulance. Your quick reassur-
ing response to our predicament was greatly appreciated.
As well, many thanks to everyone who stopped to check
on us. Every person who put themselves at risk to stop
made us feel so much better about the whole situation.
Thanks also to the 911 operator who talked me through my
panic. Sincerely Linda Portman and Maggie Crowe.
CFNKLS (Seafunkels): the funny name with the Big
Heart. Our local charity that funds so many others. North
Kootenay Lake will have a happier New Year thanks to CF-

Light Up celebration a great success. It was an especially cold night
out this year; it was so great to see so many people come out despite
the frigid temperatures!
Tis event would not be possible without community involvement
and the support of many contributors and volunteers. You are all
appreciated.

Parade: Tanks to all who came out to participate in the parade; Jen
Cookson lit the way with her light up hoops, followed by the Minor

Kaslo Building Supplies, Kaslo Fire Dept, RCMP & Ambulance
services, the JVH grads pulling Santas Sleigh, Herb Tompson who
supplied Santas ride, and of course Santa and Mrs Claus.

Bruce Freeman for bringing the wood, lighting the fre and keeping
us warm, the Kaslo Volunteer Fire Dept, and everyone else who

Water Street Redevelopment
Te Village of Kaslo intends to pave, curb and gutter
Water Street in 2014 and is currently fnalizing the costs
involved for the 2014-19 Financial Plan. A paving con-
tractor will be in the area next year and mobilization costs
will be lower than would otherwise be the case.
Important to note is that curb and gutter work will be
done on the north side of Water Street only. Landscaping
and other optional or later phase work may not be imple-
mented until 2015, depending on funds and organisation-
al capacity.
Te following considerations are important for impact-
ed stakeholders:
1. Any encroachments on the public right-of-way, for
which legal easements are not held, must be removed this
spring so as not to impede the works;
2. If you have any paving needs for your private property
that could be undertaken at the same time, Public Works
would be happy to put you in touch with the contractor at
the appropriate time for a quote. Simply make this need
known to the Village of ce.
3. Please contact Public Works to address any commer-
cial delivery or business challenges you might have dur-
ing the works so that inconvenience to your establishment
can be minimized. Some inconvenience should be antici-
pated and planned for.
While the fnal decision with respect to development
layout has been taken, staf and Council would be happy
to try and address, as best as possible, any concerns you
might have. On behalf of Council, I congratulate all vol-
