Pico WCDMA BTS in Rel.2

Pico Node B should be possible to deploy
Directly on IP backbone (public internet)
With a static preconfigured IP address On a private LAN connected via a firewall to internet Where node B IP address retrieved via DHCP Firewall may use NAT between inner and outer addresses

The IP network between Pico and RNC/TGU may be hostile

Protection needed,
both on Pico and RNC/TGU side VPN tunnels used for protection Firewalls in Pico and in front of RNC/TGU

TGU located close to RNC

Short ATM network between RNC and TGU

IP Pico Network bandwidth requirements
Depending on the services to be offered in the air interface, the requirements on available bandwidth between the Node B and the RNC differs. The following table details the bandwidth need for some example 3GPP air interface services:
RAB/SRB service Type AMR12.2 SRB3.4 CS64 PS384 HSDPA, 5codes, qpsk HSDPA, 5codes, 16qam user bitrate 12.2 kbps 3.4 kbps 64.0 kbps 384.0 kbps ~1.6Mbps ~3.2Mbps Bytes per TTI on Iub (RAB/SRB:TS25.993, FP:TS25.427) 39 bytes 24 bytes 165 bytes 509 bytes 439 bytes 878 bytes IP transport TTI 50 Hz 25 Hz 50 Hz 100 Hz 500 Hz 500 Hz overhead/TTI 28 bytes 28 bytes 28 bytes 28 bytes 28 bytes 28 bytes Iub bandwidth consumption 26.8 kbps 10.4 kbps 77.2 kbps 429.6 kbps 1868.0 kbps 3624.0 kbps

Common channels will require around 200 kbit/s and the requirement for user bearer services will be dependant on the capacity demand in the cell serviced by the Node B. Example: common channels + 3.2 Mbit/s HSDPA + 10 speech users + 4 CS64 (Video) users would require a bandwidth of: 200 + 3624 + 10*26.8 + 4*77.2 = 4400.8 kbit/s.

Time

For each Node B RNC connection, two levels are specified in the table below: 1. Very limited system performance degradation imposed by the transport network, compared to ATM operation. 2. System service is maintained but fault indications may be given. For connection to the Time Server(s) level 1 has to be fulfilled 90% of the time.

Timing and sync when using IP Network
The Pico Node B oven controlled reference oscillator will

due to aging drift up to 100 ppb per year. drift up to 20 ppb due to temperature.
3GPP requirements for a Local Area Node B is 100 ppb i.e.

No need for compensation of drift due to temperature

variations need to compensate for aging of the oscillator
NTP Time Server(s) will send time stamps to Node B 10 times each second.
