Melanie Schlaeger Self-Managed Funding Advocate

REGISTER TODAY!

Melanie is a vibrant 25 year old woman living with Cerebral Palsy. She lives the busy life of a typical young woman and credits self-managed support for enabling her to live the life she wants. With the implementation of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), Melanies experience is a positive example of a young woman making the most of the opportunity to have control and choice in her life. In spite of my physical dependence on people, I think it is very important and empowering to be able to run your own life by directing your own support and care the way you want and need it to be.

What I really want from life is to be able to say I made a difference by the time I get to the end of it.

Michele is currently studying Nutrition & Dietetics and Commercial Cookery at TAFE so that she can promote healthy eating choices to people living with disability. When working with young people, it is important to remember that the experts in young people are young people themselves, and that is why it is important to ask what works best. It is also important to remember that everyone is different and nothing will work for everyone. Providing options and choices for young people can often help with solving the issue within a personal context.
