Reality Checks Tutorial Reality Checks Reality Checks are a necessary part of the Lucid Dreaming learning curve.

Reality Checking is just what it sounds like - it is checking which reality you are in. In this case, !m I dreaming, or am I awake"# Reality checks provide a clear means of defining and distinguishing the dream world from the waking world - which is the majority of the $attle when it comes to $ecome lucid. %he idea of Reality Checking is that you get into the ha$it of asking yourself to check if you are dreaming or asking yourself if you are dreaming - you may check upon encountering a known dream sign &see' dream journal( for e)ample. !s this $ecomes a day-to-day task in the waking world, it will $ecome one in the dreaming world. *)amples of common reality checks are provided $elow - these have $een provided $y mem$ers of the Dreamviews community. If you have your own to contri$ute, post it in the appropriate forum +currently !ttaining Lucidity, and perhaps a moderator will update this tutorial. 1. Look at your watch or a clock -hen you are lucid dreaming, the part of your $rain in charge of recogni.ing num$ers and letters is still asleep. %herefore, when you check the time, it should $e completely random. /or e)ample, if you look at your watch and it is 012'230 one minute and 02'440 the ne)t, you know you are dreaming +$arring the unlikely situation that your digital watch is e)tremely $roke, and are therefore lucid. 2. Attempt to Write -hen you write, it may $e illegi$le or irregular, and the letters may change, as with a$ove. If you notice this occuring, it is a strong hint that you may $e dreaming +$arring the unlikely situation that some$ody spiked your drink., 3. Attempt to Read If you have pro$lems reading te)t, or read it once and when you try again it is different, then you are most likely dreaming. 4. Try to find unusual thin s in the world %hese are things to look out for in a dream. If, for e)ample, the sky is green and an alien is attacking you, it is most certainly a dream. 5f course, it is likely to $e far more su$tle than this, as is normal. -hen you pick up on this, try to alter your surroundings in some way - a usually easy dream trick. If you can, then you are either dreaming or magic. !. Turnin the li hts on"off -hen you are dreaming, one of the things some people are una$le to do is adjust the light level of the settings you are in. If you try to turn the light switch on6off and nothing happens then there are 2 possi$ilities' a. 7ou are dreaming $. %he light $ul$ $urnt out the light switch doesn8t work for some reason. #. Tryin somethin considered $impossi%le$ !nother method to test whether you are in a dream or not is to try somthing that you know is impossi$le in the waking life. Commonly used e)amples of this are' 9utting your finger through your palm, crossing over through a mirror, levitating, etc. I suggest you don8t try

something like flying out your window or such... just to $e on the safe side. &. 'emory Check %his is a method where you are 0asking0 yourself what have happened during the day, or fortunately a dream. %ry to think $ack as far as you can. -hen you perform this method, you will $e aware if you have e)perienced anything illogical during the day, and you may have $lank periods. (. 'irror Check :o to a mirror, and look at your self carefully. !sk yourself if you are dreaming. If you are dreaming, it is likely that you will notice something strange in the mirror. /or instance, you could have a different hair style from normal, or different clothes. 7ou may also look like you are a completely different person. In this case, you are definitely dreaming. ). *elf +%ser, ation Test %his method is similar to the one a$ove. It is a very fle)i$le reality check in that it takes little time, and you could do it almost all the time. Look at your self. If you have, for instance, ; fingers on one hand, you are dreaming. 7ou could also look at your clothes. If they look strange, you are pro$a$ly dreaming. 1-. Look for a dream si n Dream signs are common things which fre<uently appear in your dreams. /or e)ample, in some dreams, you may always see a certain person +possi$ly a dream guide, and the same features +for e)ample, something which does not e)ist in reality $ut is always there in your dreams,. 11. The .reathin Test %his is a nice all-rounder. 9inch your nose closed and keep $reathing. %ry not to think a$out your $reathing while doing it, just leave your usual 8automatic8 $reathing to do its work. If you can $reathe whilst pinching your nose, you8re dreaming. 12. /motion Analysis 9ay close attention to how you feel. If something causes you to react a certain way frustration, $liss, laughter, it would $e a good time to determine your state. %he feelings generated $y a dream are the same as in the waking world, so it8s certainly something to keep in check. 13. Constant physical awareness If you8re like me, you8ve $een trained to $e rushing from point ! to point = throughout life. Life is a race and there8s no sense of >now>. Learning to control the feeling of now is a great way to pick up on the inconsistencies. I find that learning to consciously acknowledge the little things in life is a great way to regenerate the mind8s analytical a$ility. I find this to $e very strong in kids. %hey will pick up on something insignificant to my mind, and point it out to me, and I will $e thinking 8?ow did you notice that"8 It8s that sense of 8now8, the feeling that there8s not some light waiting at the end of a tunnel, $ut that the tunnel is filled with light. 14. 0se a computer %his one8s easy. Do your normal startup programs run" Can you access the internet okay" :o to a lucid dreaming site every day you wake up - it might help trigger an LD. It is $asically the same idea as the reading test.

1!. Look outside Is the weather normal for the season" /or e)ample, if it8s snowing in the middle of summer you8re either dreaming or the ice age has started. 1#. Look at the layout of your room Is it how you left it when you went to sleep" If you have shelves, is everything on the shelves that you e)pected to" 1&. Look"use a telephone !re all the num$ers in order" 9ress the 0call0 $utton. Do you get the 0$oooo0 tone" 1(. 1ump @ust do it. Do you float" Do you stay in the air for an a$normal amount of time" Do you hear the 0thump0 sound when you land" 1). *ay somethin Aometimes your voice can $e distorted in a dream, so just say something to yourself <uietly. 2-. Throw somethin %hrow a soft $all or something of the sort. Does it act as you would e)pect it to" Does it stay up or move a$normally far" 21. Look at your pets If you have pets, just look at them. Do they look normal" Atroke them. Do they feel as they should" 22. Talk to some%ody %alk to some$ody, prefera$ly some$ody you know <uite well. Do they act as they usually act" 23. 2lay some music !re the lyrics as they should $e" !re the singers the people that should $e singing" Does it sound distorted" 24. *mell somethin Buite easy. Apray something or some perfume or just smell something - does it smell as e)pected"
