Practical Use of Argala Purana Their Essence Hayagreeva Stotram - 3 Gyana Kshetra
APRIL 2000
Argala is a very important concept in Vedic astrology. Literally speaking, argala means a bolt. Argala on a house shows the influences that intervene in its affairs and decide some aspects of it and close the bolt on it, so to speak. A planet or house in the 2 , 4 and 11 houses from a house causes primary argala on it. This simple concept can be better appreciated if some examples are given. The 4 house stands for education. The 2 , 4 and 11 from the 4 house are 5 , 7 and 2 th th houses respectively. Ones intelligence (5 ), interaction with others (7 ) and and overall character nd th and samskara (2 ) make or break one education. If Jupiter is in 5 house, he will give intelligence th th and his subhargala (benefic intervention) on 4 will help ones education. If Rahu is in 5 house, th his papargala (malefic intervention) on 4 will cause obstacles in ones education by way of poor intelligence. Similarly, benefics and malefics in the houses causing argala cause good and bad intervention. Basically, the point is that intelligence, interaction and samskara are the things that decide ones education. Let us take another example. Short journeys are seen from the 3 house. What are the things th necessary for a journey? One needs a vehicle (4 ). One may need someone to serve one by th th th driving the vehicle. Servants are seen from 6 . So, no wonder the 4 and 6 houses cause argala rd nd th rd th on the 3 house, being the 2 and 4 from it respectively! If one has papargala on 3 from 4 , it rd th may show trouble to the journey because of the vehicle. If one has papargala on 3 from 6 , it may show trouble to the journey because of the driver. Let us take another example. Domestic harmony, comfort, well-being and happiness are seen th from the 4 house. What are the things that can make or break domestic harmony? Of course, wife, children and other family members! Each of them can intervene in ones domestic harmony. th th nd th nd th th No wonder the 5 , 7 and 2 houses have an argala on the 4 house (being the 2 , 4 and 11 th th th respectively from the 4 house)! If a malefic in 5 has papargala on 4 , it may show domestic th clashes and lack of sukha (comfort/happiness) on account of a child. If a benefic in 7 has th subhargala on on 4 , it may show domestic happiness due to a caring partner. Let us now look at two practical examples to illustrate the above concepts.

Example 1:
Consider the lady in the chart. In a Leo pratyantardasa of 12 days, she went on a trip to see a popular US city. Let us try to guess who drove the minivan in which she travelled. Taking Leo as lagna, the 3 house is Libra. Planets in 6 cause argala on it and show the driver th of the short journey. Here Jupiter is in 6 . What kind of driver does Jupiter denote? Jupiter is th puttra karaka and he owns the 5 from Leo. So one of the possibilities is: a son/daughter. Indeed this lady was driven by her daughter in Leo pratyantardasa. Her daughter is a sattwik person.

Example 2:
The same lady was very unhappy during a Scorpio antardasa . She was arguing with her family members almost everyday about a particular matter and domestic harmony was suffering. From Sc, 4 house shows domestic harmony and happiness. It has Moon in it. So things should be fine, but they werent. Why? It is because of Rahu in 5 , who has an argala on 4 ! That shows some clashes related to a child th (5 ). In fact, this lady was unhappy with her younger daughter who could not get a job or get married. She was frustrated and spoiling domestic harmony with needless arguments and harassment. However, Jupiter in the 12 from 4 obstructs Rahus argala. Jupiter is putra karaka and 5 lord from Sc. So the elder daughter of this lady came to their help, told her mother that there was nothing to worry and she used to calm her mother with her wise counselling. This reduced some of the ladys tension and brought some relief and happiness. As these examples may show, argala is a very simple and basic concept. An intelligent astrologer can use it to get profound insights in practical charts.

What is Purana? The Veda is called Sruti (because it is learnt by hearing). It has four interwoven parts.

To make these four sections more easily performable Vyasadeva compiled these four parts into four seperate books. Being sympathetic towards the fallen souls of Kali-yuga, who are lazy, misdirected and have no inclination for spiritual life, Vyasadeva compiled the Puranas, from related historical facts, which explain the teachings of the four Vedas. In other words, the Puranas teach the Vedic literature in story form, making spiritual life more simple, and therefore in this age, they are more important. (Ref.:S.B. Canto 1 Ch.4 text 19-23)
There are eighteen Puranas that are divided into three groups along with three predominating Deities. 1) GOODNESS - Visnu 2) PASSION - Brahma
3) IGNORANCE - Siva They are divided in this way to gradually raise the conditioned soul from ignorance to pure goodness. The three divisions of the Puranas are compiled in this way to appeal to those people in these respective modes and to thus elevate them to the perfection of life.

I meditate on the most merciful Sri Krsna. Whose bodily hue is like a tamala tree. He has appeared for everyone's benefit in the form of Srimad Bhagavatam. The srimad Bhagavatam is like a bridge for crossing over the unending ocean of birth and death. The first and second cantos are His lotus feet. The third and fourth cantos are His two thighs. The fifth canto is His navel (waist). The seventh and eighth are His mighty shoulders. The ninth canto is His throat (neck). The tenth canto is His face, which is like a fully bloomed lotus flower. The eleventh canto is His forehead. The twelth canto is His head. (Padma Purana).

The Supreme Lord has diverse and innumerable energies which are beyond our conception; however, great learned sages or liberated souls have studied these energies and have analyzed them into three parts. All of the energies are of visnu-sakti, that is to say they are different potencies of Lord Visnu. The first energy is para, transcendental. Living entities also belong to the superior energy. The other energies, or material energies, are in the mode of ignorance. (Visnu Purana 6.7.61).
1) ANTARANGA SAKTI - Internal Potency (Yoga-maya) sat - samvit - external potency cit - sandhini - knowledge potency ananda - hladini - pleasure potency 2) BAHIRANGA SAKTI - External Energy (Maha-maya) (Bg. 7.4) a) bhumih - earth b) apah - water c) analah - fire d) vayuh - air e) kham - ether f) manah - mind g) buddhih - intelligence h) ahankara - false ego
3) TATASTHA SAKTI - Marginal Potency (Living Entities) (Bg. 7.5; 15.7) Krsna is the saktimana or the source of all energy. (Bg. 7.6)
a) The spiritual energy is eternal, full of knowledge and bliss. It is transcendental and beyond all changes of material nature. b) The external energy is the exact opposite and is therefore temporary, full of ignorance and misery. It is mundane and always changing. c) The marginal energy (jiva) also belongs to the spiritual energy, but because he has the independence to be either in the spiritual world or the material world, he is called marginal. The whole manifestation is the Lord himself by diffusion of His different energies only, namely the internal, external and marginal. Such energy is siultaneously one with and different from the Lord (acintya-bheda-abheda-tattva). (S.B. 2.9.27)
The material world is also called Durga or jail. Just as the jail is for those people who break the laws of the government, this material world is created for those souls who do not like to accept Krsna's supremacy. Just as the pupose of the jail is to reform criminals, in the same way the purpose of creation is to reform the conditioned soul or to get rid of his criminal desire to use Krsna's property without Krsna. (S.B. 2.10.46) (S.B. 2.9.19 purport)

GYANA KSHETRA
"Misery is caused on account of the desire to acquire an object rather than its shortage."
Swami Ramsukhdas
"Gandharva music is universal. It is at home with every land, with every man, with every society. It is the language of bliss, the science and art of bliss, the song of Nature." - Maharishi
Mahesh Yogi
"It is said that the child is busy with play, the youth is busy with sex, and the adult is busy with worries. How few think of the eternal bliss of the spirit. But he who seeks God, and who seeks with all the depth and fervour of his soul until he finds Him, is wisest of all men."
Paramahansa Yogananda
"All by Thee is accomplished, Thine is the might, Thou watcheth Thy handiwork, with chess pieces raw and ripe. All that into the world have come, must depart hence; And shall by turns go, Why put out of mind the Lord, master of life and death? By one's own hands is one's affairs set straight."
Swami Tejomayananda

"Everyone of may not be able to once to achieve the infinite expansion of universal oneness, but all of us are trying. Religion's original task was to help us in gradually achieving this elevated vision. To lift the limited and selfish human being from his passion, greed, and hatred to this loftier vision of the world was the essential ideal of religion."
