The two x four

6 Part Project:
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Research Sketchbook Readings and Responses Exercise cut list proposal in sketchbook Final Project - a sculpture made with a 2 x 4.

Critique & Due date:

April 9th

Introduction:
In your last project you held the form (the cube) constant in order to more freely explore a variety of materials. In this project, you will hold the primary material (the 2x4) constant in order concentrate on form. Consider also that as long as your primary material remains the 2x4 pine, you are free to apply what you learned in Project 3 to incorporate other materials that might transform your 2x4 into something else entirely.

Project:
For this project you will be each be given a single pine 2x4. Your goal is to transform the 2x4 to create a well-crafted and compelling sculptural form. You may use up to two materials in addition to the 2x4, but these additional materials cannot comprise the majority of your piece. In manipulating your primary material, consider state changes (burning, charring, pulping, sanding, etc). Can it be broken into smaller components for a larger whole? Explore joinery finger joints, biscuit joints, dado joints, etc. Experiment with surface treatments and material transformations (drilling, sanding, plaster, chicken wire, chiseling, burning, etc). The nature of the project also emphasizes economy with materials, which means an emphasis on smart planning and design. Think twice, cut once. Measure twice, cut once. As always, conceptual development and resolution is crucial, so work out your ideas and plans in your sketchbook. You should include references for your ideas (what artists did you look up or research from lecture/discussion?), sketches, notes, scale, material lists, and other relevant information about your sculpture.

Part I Research

Research at least 3 contemporary sculptors (working today) who employ wood and/or value economy of material in their work. Record these artists in your sketchbook (at least one page per artist), including at least one quality reference image for each artist and a brief legible description of the artists methods, materials, and interests. Due Tuesday 3.25. In addition, your sketchbook will be collected on the day of critique and graded for content pertaining to your cube and 2x4 projects. You should include references for your ideas (what artists did you look up or research from lecture/discussion?), sketches, notes, scale, material lists, and other relevant information about your sculpture. Your group will be given one 18-24 inch length of 2x4 to practice with prior to cutting your project 2x4. Your goal: to reduce your piece to at least 10 individual components, then reassemble them into a small-scale experimental structure. To join your components together, you may use only two of the following five elements: glue, string, wire, hardware, or joinery. No tape or hot glue permitted. In-class workday will be provided. Due Tuesday 3.25 The nature of the project also emphasizes economy with materials, which means an emphasis on smart planning and design. Think twice, cut once. Measure twice, cut once. Make a cut list and think about the most efficient manner in which to use the given material. Craft, creativity, and use of materials are important in this project. A numbered cut list with a chronological plan of action must be typed and approved by me before beginning your final project. You are welcome to experiment with scraps prior to approval of your design. If you make a mistake during the process it happens, even with the best-laid plans part of this project deals with being able to troubleshoot and determine an appropriate solution. Read one of the remaining readings of your reading packet and write a one-page response. Reflections should include a brief summary of the articles main points and your own reaction to the article. Responses should be one typed page. Due Thursday 3.27.

Part V Proposal due: Thurs 3.27 Part VI Project due: Tues 4.09

Sketchbook Proposal with clear, resolved, design and installation plan including drawings, written descriptions, concepts, and relevant material studies. Due Thursday 3.27. See project description above. Only your originally-assigned pine 2x4 may be used for your final project. A carefully planned, numbered cut list is critical for you to gain the maximum benefit from your 2x4. Up to two other materials of your choice may also be used, but the pine 2x4 must be your primary material, meaning it comprises the majority of your final sculpture. Artist statement (typed), sketchbook, and project (installed by 8:20 am) due on Due: Tuesday 4.09. | Spring 2014 | University of Florida | Erin Curry 2 of 4
