Introduction
Flat Roofs
Over the past few years, there have been major advances and improvements in the materials used in modern roofing technology. The specifier now has renewed confidence to take full advantage of the benefits of a flat roof and low pitched roof design concept. Flat roofs allow greater planning and design flexibility - roof-top gardens, terracing, patios, car parks, building services and ventilation equipment, delivery areas and provision for adding additional storeys at a later date. All can be accommodated in a flat roof design. Extensive or irregular shaped buildings can be roofed more quickly, easily and cost effectively than a pitched roof. Internal condensation is less of a risk because a flat roof uses less airspace than a pitched roof. In addition, the need to heat and illuminate voids is eliminated. Flat roofs allow easy access to natural light and because of the simple construction, internal partitioning is easy. This is especially advantageous for commercial or industrial buildings.
HP (High Performance) range of outlets provides rainwater drainage solutions for a wide range of applications.

HYDRAULIC DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS
Overview
The following notes are intended as a guide to the specifier who is designing a rainwater drainage system for a roof. It is recommended that reference is made to British Standard BS EN 12056 : 2000 Gravity Drainage Systems Inside Buildings - Part 3 : Roof drainage, layout and calculation for a comprehensive design guide. For any rainwater drainage system to work effectively and reliably, due account must be taken of the following considerations: Geographical location Rainfall intensity Effective catchment area of roof Risk category of building Hydraulic capacity of the drainage system(s) employed
Geographical Location
Rainfall intensity has a direct impact on the performance requirements of any rainwater drainage system. For roofs and paved areas, it is normally impracticable to guard against very infrequent, extremely heavy rainfall situations and so the designer should aim to strike a balance between the cost of the drainage system, the risk category of the building and the frequency and subsequent consequences of flooding. The drainage system for roofs and paved areas should be capable of coping with the intense rainfall that accompanies summer thunderstorms. The UK experiences complex and varied rainfall patterns. For example, surprisingly, although the upland areas of northern and western parts of the British Isles experience higher average annual rainfall than the lowland areas, the lowland areas experience more frequent and more intense short duration rainfall than the upland areas. British Standard BS EN 12056 : 2000 may be referred to for further information and guidance on this topic. A rainfall intensity of 75 mm/hr (0.02 l/s/ m2) is used throughout this design catalogue.
Pitched Roofs
The effective catchment area of a freely exposed pitched roof draining to an eaves or parapet wall gutter is equal to the plan area of the roof plus half its maximum elevation area.
Figure 1. Pitched Roof Plan l
Catchment area A Catchment Area A = (f x l) + (g/2 x l) (m) = l(f + g/2) (m) All linear dimensions in metres.
d e Catchment area D For a flat roof with a dual pitch, split the roof up into discrete areas to isolate the catchment areas as follows: Catchment Area C = c x d (m) Catchment Area D = c x e (m) All linear dimensions in metres.
Similarly, for a flat roof exposed to two or more vertical walls forming an angle or bay, the assumed resulting wind direction requires that the combined areas of the walls should be considered together as follows:
Figure 5 Monopitch Flat Roof with Two Adjacent Vertical Walls
a Catchment area F Catchment area E

HP Range
Description
The ACO Building Drainage HP range of rainwater outlets provides a comprehensive selection of high performance rainwater outlet solutions for most domestic, industrial and commercial applications involving flat roofs, balconies and terracing. High Flow Rate Reduced Installation Costs Compared to conventional outlets, high performance outlets mean either fewer outlets/pipe/groundworks with reduced installation costs, or greater security in extreme rainfall conditions. Secure Gratings All gratings for the HP range of products are secured with stainless steel fixings that require either a socket wrench or spanner for removal and replacement. This provides additional security to prevent theft or vandalism. Membrane Clamp The roof membrane is positively secured into the outlet body by a clamp and is secured by 2 stainless steel fixings. The membrane clamp is serrated on the underside for improved membrane clamp grip performance. The outlet design ensures the integrity of the seal between the clamp and body is not disturbed when the grating is removed for maintenance during the life of the installation. Materials All products are manufactured from LM6 grade aluminium alloy to BS 1490 as standard for optimum corrosion resistance.
Product Features
Cost effective drainage solution - high flow rates minimises number of outlets required. Secure grating to prevent vandalism and theft. Advanced design features encourage a higher flow rate of water through the outlet compared to conventional systems by reducing the amount of air that is drawn into the outlet. If allowed to go unchecked, a vortex will form as the water enters the outlet - the same effect can be seen in the bath or a sink when the plug is removed. Comprehensive product range for most applications. Durable, corrosion resistant construction. Gun-metal optionally available. At the centre of the vortex, a void is naturally formed as the water spirals through the outlet. Under these conditions, both water and air are drawn into the outlet significantly reducing efficiency. For maximum flow rate efficiency, only water should enter the outlet. This may result in the use of fewer outlets for a given installation.
The ACO Building Drainage HP range of outlets provide anti-vortex design features to minimise this effect and a twofold design approach is adopted to achieve this. On all circular domed gratings an inverted cup arrangement is integrated within the grating to breakdown the vortex effect within the grating and in addition, the leaf guard geometry of the gratings is optimised to encourage water to flow radially into the outlet, thereby minimising the vortex effect outside of the grating.

Aluminium Alloys
Aluminium alloys are very common and can be found in a wide range of applications ranging from cooking utensils to spacecraft. The material is commercially available in excess of 99% purity and is used primarily for its high resistance to corrosion, lightness and strength. Comparing similar products, aluminium alloys weigh around one-third as much as equivalent mild steel and stainless steel products and compared to mild steel, they have a much better corrosion resistance to atmospheric conditions. Because aluminium alloys are strong, lightweight, have good corrosion resistance, are cost effective and have excellent casting properties, this material is an obvious first choice for rainwater outlets and floor gullies. Additionally, being non-magnetic, aluminium will not attract ferrous particles that could otherwise cause silt traps and long term maintenance issues. ACO Building Drainage aluminium rainwater outlets, shower drains and floor drains use LM6 grade aluminium alloy to BS 1490. LM6 exhibits excellent resistance to corrosion in both atmospheric and marine environments compared to other aluminium alloys, and is resistant to sulphate attack for curing concrete. When exposed to the atmosphere, a thin invisible aluminium oxide film forms on the surface of the material that protects the material from further oxidation.
Gun-metal
Gun metal possesses good tensile strength and corrosion resistant properties and is used in many bearing and marine applications. ACO Building Drainage rainwater outlets are available in gunmetal when bi-metallic corrosion resistance arising from lead or copper materials is a potential risk. Gun-metal is an alloy of copper, tin and zinc. Admiralty gun-metal typically has a composition of 88% copper, 10% tin and 2% zinc.
The Electromotive Series provides an insight to the corrosion effects between dissimilar materials.
24
Galvanic Corrosion
Galvanic corrosion occurs when two dissimilar metals are in electrical contact and connected by an electrolyte. An electrolyte conducts electricity and can be water solutions containing salts or acids and need not be concentrated for the effect to take place. The effects of galvanic corrosion begin to play an important part when an aluminium rainwater outlet is used in conjunction with metallic membranes, such as lead or copper.

Threaded Outlets
For all ACO Building Drainage threaded outlets (HP Vertical Screw and Two-Way outlets) are provided with female parallel threads conforming to BS 21:1985 for direct connection of threaded tube conforming to BS 1387:1985. This tube is supplied with a taper male thread conforming to BS 21:1985, which ensures a watertight joint when fully screwed into the unit. 30 Threaded outlets are particularly recommended where a connection to the outlet is made within the thickness of the concrete slab. In these applications, the threaded connection creates a completely watertight seal. Where an ABS screw thread connector (STC) is used in conjunction with threaded outlets, the screw thread connector should be assembled with PTFE tape to ensure a watertight seal.
Deck Supports
ACO deck supports are recommended for metal decked roof construction and are suitable for installation on all types of metal decked roofs. Deck supports have pre-drilled holes for ease of fixing.
Refurbishment Outlet
Refurbishment outlets are designed to conveniently fit within the existing rainwater outlet of the roof that is being refurbished, which means there is no need to remove the existing rainwater outlet. Refurbishment outlets incorporate a high performance domed grating and optimised tail pipe to maximise flow through the unit. The labyrinth finned seal ensures a watertight connection to the existing pipework. Two sealable access points within the body enable PU foam to be injected to fill the void between the old and new outlet.
Step 1 Strip back all roof coverings to the deck level. Clean out old outlet with wire brush and flush with clean water.
Step 5 Flush with clean water to lubricate and insert tail pipe into existing pipework. Seat flange on timber frame.
