INTRODUCTION The advances and improvements of current gas tur ine techno!og" have !ed to more efficient and more po#erfu! engines$ One ver" !arge improvement over the past fift" "ears has een the increase in ma%imum gas temperature that is produced in the gas tur ine engine$ &urrent!"' temperatures in mi!itar" aircraft tur ines can reach upto ()** degree &e!sius and for commercia! aircraft temperatures can reach upto (+** degree &e!sius$ This increase in temperature has in turn increased efficienc"' ut has a!so introduced other pro !ems such as the actua! constraints in the materia!s itse!f$ The super a!!o" that is used to create the tur ines in a gas tur ine engine has a me!ting point of around (,** degree &e!sius #hich as #e can see is #e!! e!o# the operating temperature of the engine$ To overcome these constraints three ma-or advancements have een deve!oped. /i0creating a!!o"s that are more creep resistant and o%idation resistant' /ii0 inc!uding channe!s in the !ades so that air can f!o# through them' and /iii0 deve!opment of a therma! arrier coating /TB&0 on the tur ine !ade itse!f$ 1as tur ine engines use nic2e!3 and co a!t3 ase super a!!o"s in the tur ine components' such as airfoi!s' com ustors' transition ducts' and sea!s$ Increased therma! efficienc" demands of the ne#er engines re4uire that the tur ine in!et temperature e significant!" increased$ This must e accomp!ished #ithout structura! fai!ure of e components from me!ting' creep' o%idation' therma! fatigue' or other degradation mechanisms$ Therefore' the surface temperature of these components must maintained !o# enough to retain materia!s properties #ithin accepta !e !imits$ The demand is partia!!" met " innovative component coo!ing schemes using compresor discharge air$ 5o#ever' coo!ing air is on!" avai!a !e at the e%pense of !oss of thrust and added fue! consumption$ The ma-or e!ement in meeting the demand #ithout significant performance !oss comes from t#o para!!e! materia!s innovations. /i0 improvement in the temperature capa i!it" of super a!!o"s and /ii0 deve!opment of therma! arrier coatings /TB&s0 capa !e of providing therma! insu!ation e4uiva!ent to a out (6) to (7* 8&$ TB&s are a i!a"er s"stem' consisting of a meta!!ic !a"er /the ond coat0 on the su strate on #hich a ceramic !a"er is deposited$ In addition to /(0

In an effort to protect the tur ine !ades from e%treme!" high temperature gasesF the therma! arrier coating /TB&0 s"stem has een imp!emented$ The TB& s"stem primari!" consists of fo!!o#ing !a"ers. (0 &eramic top3coat' :0 Therma!!" gro#n o%ide /T1O0' ,0 Bond coat' and C(rami) to7")oat. 3 The ceramic top3coat is the !a"er that provides therma! insu!ation for the !ade$ It has a ver" !o# therma! conductivit" and has een designed using point defects to #ithstand therma! c"c!es$ This !a"er is t"pica!!" made of B :O, #hich is sta i!i9ed #ith ArO: or in short BSA$ The therma! conductivit" for this !a"er at a temperature of a thousand degrees &e!sius is :$, <D/M8E0 #hich is one of !o#est conductivit" of a!! the ceramics$ In addition BSA has a ver" high me!ting point /:7**

The ond coat is primari!" deposited " He!ectrop!ating in con-unction #ith diffusion3 a!umini9ing or chemica!3vapour deposition$I Recent!"' the high ve!ocit" o%"3fue! techno!og" /5COG0 is a!so increasing!" used for this tas2$

The &eramic top3coat on other hand is current!" eing deposited in t#o different #a"s. #as decreased' crac2ing of the ond coat in EB3PCD coated s"stems #as suppressed' the !ife of the coated s"stem increased significant!" and de!amination of the top3coat #as o served$ A su se4uent GE ana!"sis sho#ed that' " su -ecting the s"stem to the higher mechanica! strain' significant tensi!e stresses deve!op in the T1O and the ond coat that are thought to e responsi !e for the o served crac2 initiation and " propagation$ The GE mode! a!so predicts that crac2ing initiates at specific geometric features of the rough interface of a PS coated s"stem' #hich #as confirmed meta!!ographic e%amination of fai!ed samp!es$ The decrease of the app!ied mechanica! strain and hence of the deve!oped stresses !ed to the suppression of fai!ure " ond coat crac2ing and activate de!amination$ These resu!ts out!ine the importance of designing TMG tests and se!ecting the appropriate mechanica! !oading in order to acce!erate testing and sti!! trigger the same fai!ure mechanisms as o served in3service$

As one can see in Gigure 6' the temperature distri ution drops dramatica!!" through the ceramic top coat ecause of its ver" !o# therma! conductivit"$ Gurthermore' these resu!ts sho# that the temperature distri ution through the supper a!!o" is #e!! e!o# the me!ting point of the meta! #hich is #hat #as e%pected$ /(:0
