Book of Germantown history now available

A pictorial journey through the first part of the twentieth century, decade-by-decade, Germantown in the 20th Century, Part 1: 1900-1959 is now on sale by the Germantown Historical Society. Each chapter will include a review of significant international, national, and state-wide events, all designed to put in perspective what occurred locally in Germantown and the surrounding area during the decade. Captioned photos of developing agricultural and commercial ventures, along with schools, churches, recreation and family life tell the story of a sleepy, rural area growing into a booming city suburb. The book is made personal through rarely-seen photos provided by people in the community sharing their family's story. The 128-page, 8-by-11-inch hard cover book, printed on high quality, durable paper, sells for $55, tax included. It is available at the publisher, Allied Digital Photo, at German Glass and Gifts, and at Sinter Klausen Christmas Shop and through www.bastbellmuseum.com, with an additional shipping fee of $5.

Staying safe in the winter

BY NIKKI ACKERMAN STAFF WRITER While winter brings with it many positivesbuilding a snowman, sipping hot cocoa by the fireplace, outdoor activitiesit also presents certain areas of danger. However, by using common sense regarding the main areas of risk, one can enjoy a happy, injuryfree season. Slippery surfaces The number one injury we tend to see in winter is slips and falls, stated Dr. Robert Beyer, an emergency medicine physician who works primarily out of Community Memorial Hospital in Menomonee Falls. Especially when we have an excess of snow and ice, falls are very common for us to see. Its very important to be careful. Senior citizens should be especially cautious, said Beyer. Their bones are more brittle and some fractureslike a hip fracturecan be pretty devastating, he said. Seniors should have someone with them when they walk on ice and, in general, have family, friends and neighbors who keep and eye on them in the winter months. During the snowy season, the more salt, the better, the doctor said. Use an abundance of salt, he urged. You can never use too much. Some salt on the driveways, stairs, wherever youre walking, can prevent falls and injuries. Cold temperatures As many as 700 people die each year from frostbite or hypothermia, according to the National Safety Council. That, however, is the extreme and the danger begins well before that, said Beyer, as frostnipthe precursor to frostbiteis far more likely. Once the temperatures start to drop significantly below zero with the wind chill, you are at risk, the doctor said. Once you start to feel pain, that is frostnip. Frostbite is numbness that is analogous to burning. Stay inside as much as possible, Beyer said, but when heading outdoors follow this advice: Cover all exposed areas. Layer clothing and wear proper material. As a rule, dress in layers, Beyer said. Cotton breathes, but it also absorbs moisture. In order to avoid this, active individuals should wear synthetic clothing that traps heat without holding onto the dampness of sweat. Go inside periodically. If youre going to be outside longer than 30 minutes, make sure you take breaks to go inside and warm up, said the doctor. Fire and carbon monoxide We tend to get a lot more chimney fires in the winter, said John Delain, public education coordinator for the Germantown Fire Department. This happens when people dont have their chimneys properly cleaned and inspected. Delain recommends this be done once per year and he also advises families to have a carbon monoxide detector on all levels of their house. Carbon monoxide emergencies also rise during the winter months due to the use of the furnace, he explained. Driving Motorists should carry a survival kit when traveling, said Delain, especially since driving emergencies are much more likely to occur during the winter than any other season. According to the Weather Channel website, the kit should include: blankets; a snow shovel; a flashlight; hand warmers; matches; bottles of water and protein bars; a syphon pump; lightsticks; flares; and a whistle. Delain also noted jumper cables, an ice scraper and a fire extinguisher. Its always good to have a supply kit in your car, he said. A lot of stores even sell pre-made roadside emergency kits; they can be obtained very conveniently. Winter activities Wisconsin winters are too long for people to sit inside idle, said Beyer, but pointed out that with hobbies such as skiing, sledding, snowmobiling and ice skating, awareness is key. As a rule, these sports are incredibly safe as long as you take a few precautions, said the doctor. A few guidelines are: Go easy the first time out for the season. Dont do a strenuous activity that youre not prepared for, said Beyer. Most of the sportsrelated activities we see are when its the individuals first time out for the year and they dont have their sea legs yet. Just like driving in the snow for the first time each year, theres a bit of a learning curve. Watch the alcohol. Use alcohol in moderation, said the doctor. A lot of the crashes and fatalities we see with these activities involve alcohol. Also, he noted, alcohol numbs ones senses and depresses the central nervous system so a person may not feel the full effect of the cold weather. They are more prone to things like hypothermia and dehydration, said Beyer. Know your surroundings. Never walk on a lake or river if you dont know how thick the ice is, said Delain, noting that various state websites give ice reports. Use common sense with physical chores. Even with mundane tasks such as shoveling, caution should be used, said Delain. The elderly and individuals with poor cardiovascular health should ask for assistance, he said. Bottom line: Be smart in the winter. Whatever youre doing, be extremely aware of your surroundings and be mindful of your senses, said Beyer.

Simple actions can make the difference in home fires

(NAPSI)-There seem to be countless things we don't think twice about when it comes to protecting our families. You'd never hit the road on a long road trip without buckling your baby in a car seat. And most people have a nightly habit of making sure the house is locked before going to bed. Both are simple things that become a habit in order to keep your family safe. So why are Americans still not taking simple actions to protect their families from home fires? According to the United States Fire Administration (USFA), almost 2,500 people die every year in home fires. Yet most of these deaths occur in homes without working smoke alarms. Did you also know that cooking is the main cause of home fires and home fire injuries? But it doesn't have to be that way, because Fire is Everyone's Fight. There are simple steps you can take right now to reduce your risk of a home fire that could not just injure you or a loved one, but could take a life. Put smoke alarms in your home to keep your family safe. Make sure your smoke alarms work. Your family is not safe if they can't hear the smoke alarms. Test your smoke alarms. Push the test button. You will hear a loud noise. If you don't hear the noise, you need a new battery or a new alarm. Fix this immediately. To protect against cooking-related fires and injuries, keep an eye on what you fry. Most cooking fires start when someone is frying food. Hot oil and grease can burn people and start fires. Be prepared when cooking and make the cooking area safe. Make sure children and pets stay at least 3 feet away from a hot stove. Clean and clear the area around the stove before you turn on the heat. Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove so no one can bump them or pull them over. Just as the simple click of a seat belt can become a habit that decreases your chance of being injured in a car crash, getting in the habit of doing these fire safety practices may help save your life or the life of your family one day. Remember, keeping you safe isn't just the fire department's job.

Bay dominates Falls

Whitefish Bay set the pace against Menomonee Falls Dec. 21 with a 13-2 run to start the game and kept control throughout, winning 64-36 in a game played at the Al McGuire Center. "Hats off to Whitefish Bay, they're good at what they do," Menomonee Falls Coach Ben Farley said afterward. Bay used its length and a full court defense to limit scoring opportunities for Menomonee Falls. A seven-point run by the Blue Dukes gave Whitefish Bay a 43-23 lead with 53 seconds left before halftime after Ryan Olver converted a free throw. "Their length is the biggest thing that bothered us," Farley said. The Blue Dukes continued to build on the lead in the second half, outscoring Menomonee Falls by 12 points in the third quarter and eight points in the fourth quarter. Jake Stauffacher led Menomonee Falls with nine points. Afterward, Menomonee Falls had a 2-1 Greater Metro Conference record and a 4-4 overall mark. Menomonee Falls was scheduled to play at the John Chekouras Tournament at Homestead High School Dec. 27-28. Hamilton results Hamilton beat Marquette Dec. 20, 65-52. Brady Ellingson led Hamilton with 35 points. Afterward, Hamilton had a 2-1 Greater Metro record and a 5-3 overall mark. Hamilton was to play Racine Horlick at the Luke Homan Tournament at Brookfield Central Dec. 28.

Boys basketball: Germantown adds to winning streak

The Germantown boys basketball team added to their record-setting winning streak Dec. 21, as the Warhawks followed a gameopening seven-point run with a 23-4 run in the second quarter on the way a to a 68-44 win over Pius Xi Dec. 21 at the Al McGuire Classic, which was held at the Al McGuire Center. Germantown opened the game with baskets by Jon Averkamp and Evan Wesenberg, and a basket by Jake Showalter prompted Pius to call time out. Germantown continued to add onto its lead, as a 10-point run gave Germantown a 3411 lead with three minutes left in the second quarter. Afterward, Germantown Coach Steve Showalter said "top guys against top guys we made a good statement and that's what we're trying to do." Jake Showalter led Germantown with 18 points while Brian Bearden added 16 points. The win followed a 73-50 North Shore Conference win at Grafton the previous evening. The Pius victory was the 65th consecutive win for Germantown, a winning streak that dates to the beginning of the 2011-12 season. Germantown's winning streak is the longest winning streak among any boys basketball team in state history. The game was third weekend where Germantown had a Friday game followed by a Saturday contest. The Warhawks then had Friday/Saturday games at the WBY Shootout Dec. 27-28.

Girls basketball: Germantown comeback falls short

The Germantown girls basketball team fell behind early against Arrowhead Dec. 21 and a late comeback fell short, as Germantown lost 55-48. It was the first loss of the season for Germantown Arrowhead scored the first 13 points until Germantown went on a 7-2 run to make the score 15-7 after one quarter. Arrowhead kept the lead between nine and 12 points during the second quarter and extended the lead to 40-21 following a basket by Lauren Peterson near the 6:30 mark of the third quarter. But Germantown rallied late in the game as they converted three three-point baskets late in the fourth quarter. But Arrowhead converted several free throws toward the end to hold off Germantown's comeback. Afterward, Germantown Coach Matt Stuve noted that Arrowhead was able to break Germantown's pressure defense and it took Germantown several minutes to adjust. "Arrowhead came out really well prepared with a lot of intensity and it took us three to four minutes to figure that out and meet that level of effort," Stuve said. "For the rest of the game we played OK." Stuve added that the details were key to the final result. "Against Arrowhead, you have to do the little things. If you don't, you get the result we had today. Just be more mindful of the details." Germantown was to play at the Christine Rathke Memorial tournament at Franklin High School Dec. 26-28. Menomonee Falls results Menomonee Falls had a 2-1 Greater Metro Conference record and a 3-5 overall mark following a 62-36 win over West Allis Central Dec. 28. Erin Otzelberger led Menomonee Falls with 15 points. Menomonee Falls was scheduled to play at the Fort Atkinson tournament Dec. 27. Hamilton results Hamilton lost to Divine Savior Holy Angels Dec. 20, 48-31. Taylor Klug led Hamilton with 13 points. Afterward, Hamilton had a 2-1 record in the Greater Metro Conference and 3-3 overall record. Hamilton was to play in the Ashwaubenon Holiday Classic Dec. 27-28.
