Krueger's mentor was Randy Daughters, UW-Stout. "Students gained experience in presenting research, had networking opportunities with faculty and staff and had a chance to interact in a diverse environment with scholars from across the nation," said Sarah Wynn, UW-Stout McNair Scholars Program director. Students also attended workshops about preparing for graduate school and heard a talk by Carl McNair, brother of the program's namesake. The Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program began nationally in 1989 to bring more first-generation college students and disadvantaged groups into higher education. It is named after McNair, a scholar and astronaut who died in the 1986 Challenger space shuttle explosion. UW-Stout's McNair program began in fall 2009. A two-day audition process occurs at the beginning of each fall semester, and then faculty members place students in specific jazz combos that reflect their strengths and unique skills. "The Jazz Combos change every semester, making way for a very creative atmosphere," said Bradley Townsend, adviser. "These are smaller groups with higher leadership roles, but the experience always pays off." MSOE To Induct Nine Into Hall of Fame Milwaukee School of Engineering has announced nine former student-athletes will make up the 2014 induction class into the MSOE Athletics Hall of Fame. Chris Boardman (soccer / 2001-05 / Wauwatosa, Wis.) will be among the nine inducted during a ceremony and banquet Feb. 8, 2014 at the Kern Center. Boardman was a three-time All-Lake Michigan Conference honoree while playing every position in the field for the MSOE men's soccer team. He began his career in the midfield and moved to forward as a sophomore when he was among conference leaders with eight goals and six assists for 22 points. Then, as a junior, Boardman moved to central defense. He suffered a knee injury midway through that season, but returned to start every game as a senior and reassert himself as one of the top players in the conference. Boardman was named to the Lake Michigan Conference All-Rookie team as a freshman. He then earned All-LMC awards at forward as a sophomore and defender as a senior in 2004.

Simple actions can make the difference in home fires

(NAPSI)-There seem to be countless things we don't think twice about when it comes to protecting our families. You'd never hit the road on a long road trip without buckling your baby in a car seat. And most people have a nightly habit of making sure the house is locked before going to bed. Both are simple things that become a habit in order to keep your family safe. So why are Americans still not taking simple actions to protect their families from home fires? According to the United States Fire Administration (USFA), almost 2,500 people die every year in home fires. Yet most of these deaths occur in homes without working smoke alarms. Did you also know that cooking is the main cause of home fires and home fire injuries? But it doesn't have to be that way, because Fire is Everyone's Fight. There are simple steps you can take right now to reduce your risk of a home fire that could not just injure you or a loved one, but could take a life. Put smoke alarms in your home to keep your family safe. Make sure your smoke alarms work. Your family is not safe if they can't hear the smoke alarms. Test your smoke alarms. Push the test button. You will hear a loud noise. If you don't hear the noise, you need a new battery or a new alarm. Fix this immediately. To protect against cooking-related fires and injuries, keep an eye on what you fry. Most cooking fires start when someone is frying food. Hot oil and grease can burn people and start fires. Be prepared when cooking and make the cooking area safe. Make sure children and pets stay at least 3 feet away from a hot stove. Clean and clear the area around the stove before you turn on the heat. Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove so no one can bump them or pull them over. Just as the simple click of a seat belt can become a habit that decreases your chance of being injured in a car crash, getting in the habit of doing these fire safety practices may help save your life or the life of your family one day. Remember, keeping you safe isn't just the fire department's job.

Working from home is a viable option to many people, but there are several considerations to take into account before starting an at-home business. First, there is the time consideration. How much time can you devote to your business? If you are a stay-at-home mom with young children, you may only have nap times to work versus a mom whose children are in school for most of the day. Then there is location. Where will you work? Ideally a separate space or office works best but is not always practical. Be creative when looking for an area to work. No matter how ridiculous your idea may seem, if it works, use it. Coming up with a practical business idea is only a matter of your imagination. Many a successful business has started with a single thought. Earmuffs, for example, were first invented by a mother who sewed fur onto ear-sized caps to protect her sons ears from the cold. However, you dont have to come up with a novel idea to be successfulyou just have to be good at what you do. Take these ideas, for example. If you have a particular area of interest, consider capitalizing on it. One area of high need is men and women who can do work around the house. Most handymen or jack-of-all-trades are in very high demand and often booked months in advance. If you have painting, drywall, carpentry or minor electrical or plumbing skills, you might consider this as an option. Your investment in tools would probably be minimal since you most likely already have what youll need. A small budget for initial advertising and insurance is all youll need to get started. Once established, word of mouth is the usual course of obtaining new customers. Your name will spread like wildfire if you do good work and charge a fair price. Choosing to start a business revolving around your interests can sometimes backfire. Keep in mind the difference between indulging your interests on your own time and having to work to meet someone elses time schedule. In business, the two are not always compatible. With little or no money, you can start up any number of businesses. Perhaps you enjoy sewing. A good seamstress is always in high demand. You can specialize in one area like wedding gowns and bridesmaid gowns, custom draperies or clothing alterations. If you are experienced at painting and wallpapering, you may find your services needed by those who dont have the time to decorate their own homes. Plant maintenance requires nothing more than water, plant food and the knowledge to use each properly. Many a young man has started mowing lawns, only to find years later that he has a booming yard care service. In a metropolitan area, dog walking might be a source of income. A retired person who loves animals might find this a pleasant way to spend an afternoon while getting plenty of exercise, too. The possibilities are endless. Here are some other ways people work from home: mail order sales, E-bay sales, financial advisor, bookkeeper, landscaper/gardener, upholsterer, bicycle repair specialist, house sitter, personal shopper, professional writer, caterer, house cleaner, food deliverer, auto detailer, antiques dealer, bed & breakfast, desktop publisher, computer consultant, graphic designer, muralist, estate sale manager, real-estate appraiser, carpenter, word processing/transcriptionist, translater, beautician/color consultant or carpet cleaner. Working from home is not for everyone, but if you have the time and the desire to succeed, earning an income from the comfort of your own home is a very real possibility.
