Projects
Original thinking, truly applied.
The key strength of the Manchester MBA programme lies in the projects. Live projects, in which students have the chance to work with real companies on real briefs, are a mile apart from the case studies and simulated projects on offer at other schools. The Manchester MBA represents a safe and controlled environment to apply your learnings in a way that tests academic theory. My previous experience of education is that youre left to apply theoretical learning after graduation not so at MBS!

We believe you can only learn by doing. From day one you will work on consultancy projects with real clients. Our unique, hands-on approach to learning gives you more client-facing hours than any other MBA course nearly six months worth so you can test theories in real-world situations and stay connected to business. You will benefit from working with a diverse range of local, national and international clients, from not-for-profit organisations to global blue chips. Youll gain first-hand experience of the rewards and challenges of working as a team on real business issues and bidding against other teams for your final project. Plus, with every project you work on, youre building up a strong network of international business contacts that could have a real impact on your future career. Thats the Manchester Method.

The projects are designed to bring the best out of the students, to bring you out of your comfort zone, through applied learning in the workplace. The very first project I worked on was for a not-for-profit organisation. We acted as consultants for the client, who were actually facing similar challenges to ones I have experienced in a professional capacity. Learning cant get more hands on than that. You will be stretched more than at any other stage of your MBA so far and you will learn more than you thought possible. The project builds on your learning from the Not-for-Profit Project and involves working with an external client to solve a real-life business issue. You will work under realistic consultancy conditions bidding against other teams, managing the project and delivering a solution to very tight timescales and budgets. You will be expected to deliver practical and actionable recommendations that will have a genuine impact on your clients business. Although the companies are based in the UK, their problems might not be. Many of the UK consultancy projects have an international dimension, which will not only challenge you but prepare you for the International Business Project and your future career.
BMW developing a robust supply chain An MBA team worked with BMW to harness the wealth of knowledge about suppliers that already existed among its employees, outside stakeholders and research institutions. They designed a platform to engage with internal and external agents, crowd source knowledge and enhance collaborative work and research. The team developed a global rollout plan for the platform and provided a range of methods to analyse and maintain it once launched. Working with high level BMW employees on developing a solution which could have far reaching implications, they were able to give the company a business rather than an IT perspective, with the emphasis on user needs.

Your team will act as the acquisitions function of a major corporation such as Associated British Foods. You will analyse the company and formulate an acquisition strategy. Although the project is simulated, it includes interactive and real-life role-play situations that will test your negotiation skills to the limit. This project is perfect for those who want to develop a career in business development, financial management or investment banking, but it also gives you the multidisciplinary strategy, negotiation, finance and accounting skills essential in modern business.
The project showed efficient possibilities for better communication and collaboration within the supply chain. The MBS team also offered a clear recommendation for next steps in implementation and rollout.

This goes beyond any academic project its a real piece of international professional consultancy. You have to build the best team; choose from a list of exciting project briefs from major global companies; then pitch your ideas against other MBA teams, and potentially against external consultancy firms. Your team will travel internationally and undertake more than 2,000 hours of collective consultancy work, giving you the opportunity to access senior figures at some of the worlds most prestigious companies and in some cases receive job offers. The International Business Project is your chance to prove yourself in a high-pressure, high-risk, real business situation the perfect preparation for a career in international business.

Tesco a finance transformation journey Two teams worked in 11 countries to evaluate Tescos worldwide financial administration processes. They interviewed 270 internal customers and finance staff in 14 global locations. They received electronic survey responses from 770 internal customers and 216 external business partners. A total of 90 key performance indicators were reviewed against internal achievements and external benchmarks. Teams recommended opportunities for improvement in productivity, cost and user service.
We had a terrific experience with one of the International Business Project teams who helped us understand our end-to-end finance organisation spread across Asia (five countries). As we embarked on our Global Finance Transformation journey it was critical to get an in-depth understanding of where we were in terms of efficiency and effectiveness; as well as recommendations on where we could take it to. The team has given us great insights and our future plan is heavily reliant on the work done.

Cost of living We estimate the cost of living for a single student to be 15,200 for the duration of the programme. Those bringing a partner or family should budget for approximately 23,750. Current UK immigration regulations (April 2013) allow permission for the partner or spouse of a Tier-4 student (with leave to remain for 12 months or more) to work in the UK. When you apply We guarantee a quick response to your application and will keep you informed at every stage of the process. We'll help you understand visa regulations and offer advice on finance, scholarships and bursaries. We can put you in touch with current students or alumni from similar backgrounds if you need first-hand advice about the programme.
Before you arrive Access to our online applicant community puts you in touch with the current class and alumni to hear what the experience is like. When you arrive University accommodation is guaranteed for single full-time, international students. There are a limited number of double rooms and flats available for students with families and partners. Most MBAs opt for private accommodation. We have a Partner Club for families of our MBA students.
