ASSESSMENT METHODS

Final marks will be awarded on the following basis: Class Attendance, Participation and Contribution Individual research paper Pre-trip Group Project Presentation Final Group Project Report & Presentation

- 20% - 25% - 15% - 40%

Participants will also be evaluated individually. You will be assessed based on attendance, participation, contribution to learning discussions and your preparedness in Singapore and during the BSM (20%). You are also expected to write an Individual Research Paper on Taiwan. Your instructor will provide you with more information about the Group Project and Individual Research Paper in class. Class participation is assessed according to the following criteria: Level F D range Criteria B range A range Absent without reason. Disruptive in class. Present, not disruptive. Tries to respond when called on but does not offer much. Demonstrates very infrequent involvement in discussion. Demonstrates adequate preparation: knows basic case or reading facts, but does not show evidence of trying to interpret or analyze them. Offers straightforward information (e.g., straight from the case or reading), without elaboration or very infrequently (perhaps once a class). Does not offer to contribute to discussion, but contributes to a moderate degree when called on. Demonstrates sporadic involvement. Demonstrates good preparation: knows case or reading facts well, has thought through implications of them. Offers interpretations and analysis of case material (more than just facts) to class. Contributes well to discussion in an ongoing way: responds to other students' points, thinks through own points, questions others in a constructive way, offers and supports suggestions that may be counter to the majority opinion. Demonstrates consistent ongoing involvement. Demonstrates excellent preparation: has analyzed case exceptionally well, relating it to readings and other material (e.g., readings, course material, discussions, experiences, etc.). Offers analysis, synthesis, and evaluation of case material, e.g., puts together pieces of the discussion to develop new approaches that take the class further. Contributes in a very significant way to ongoing discussion: keeps analysis focused, responds very thoughtfully to other students' comments, contributes to the cooperative argumentbuilding, suggests alternative ways of approaching material and helps class analyze which approaches are appropriate, etc. Demonstrates ongoing very active involvement.

C range

There will be no final examination for this course. Note: Marks amongst individual members in group projects may differ as a confidential peer evaluation system will be conducted. INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS AND EXPECTATIONS

This course qualifies for one course unit and encompasses preparatory seminars in Singapore, culminating into a Business Study Mission (BSM) at the end of the term. The departure date for the BSM is scheduled on Sunday 4th May to Saturday 10th May 2014. Specifically, the course consists of two components: Seminar Sessions on SMU campus throughout Term 2, Year 2013-2014 A 7 days Business Study Mission in May 2014

The preparatory seminars in Singapore will be devoted to research and discussion of Taiwans industry integrating the economic, political, legal, social, cultural and general business issues, particularly those issues pertaining to the region/places of the BSM destination. Entrepreneurs and business executives with rich experience in working or doing businesses in the manufacturing & industrial sector, including the lifestyle and Agri-Biotechnology area, will be invited to speak at seminars prior to the trip. All classes including guest-speaker sessions and the BSM are compulsory. Failure to undertake the BSM or attend all classes and site visits during the BSM will result in failing the course.

Participants will work in groups of about 4-5 people on an applied research project. Each group will be required to research in an area/topic of study pertaining to the latest economic and business development in Taiwan. Before the trip, each project team will be required to make a presentation of their preliminary research findings. With feedback from the class and the instructor, the project teams will make necessary amendments to their research study. During the BSM, the project teams should endeavor to collect information to complete their project study. The project reports should be submitted within ONE WEEK after return from the trip. Each group will do a Final Presentation of their major research project at the end of the Field Trip. Your instructor will inform you the date of presentation before the trip.

GROUP RESEARCH PROJECT AND PRESENTATION

Apart from the group-based research projects, each student is required to conduct an independent study and write up a study paper in no more than 2,000 words. For the individual study paper, students may either choose a topic pertaining to the contemporary Taiwans economic, political, legal, social and cultural aspects relating to the topic of manufacturing & industrial transformation, including lifestyle and Agri Biotechnology. They may also choose a topic related to their group project and do a further investigation and analysis of certain aspects/issues. The primary objective of this individual assignment is to help prepare students for the learning mission and also develop their understanding of their visit destination. The individual paper is to be completed and submitted by the end of Week 9.
