GAYLORD It was a
clean sweep for Cheboygan
when it came to the Player of
the Year and Coach of the
Year awards in baseball.
After guiding the Chiefs to
a record season that includ-
ed 24 victories, another
undefeated season in the
Straits Area Conference and
the schools first-ever district
baseball championship,
Cheboygans Kevin Baller
was an easy choice for
Coach of the Year honors.
The Chiefs mound ace,
seed-throwing senior
Damon Proctor is the 2013
Player of the Year after
recording an outstanding 9-
1-1 record on the hill against
some very stiff competition
and shining in the postsea-
son as the Chiefs won their
district title against Petoskey
and then advanced to the
regional finals the following
week in Cadillac.
Team captains for the 2013
Top Choice baseball team
include Proctor and sweet-
swinging senior teammate
Stan Swiderek and
Johannesburg-Lewistons
slugging leftfielder Alex
Payne.
Proctor, a powerful pres-
ence on the hill who invokes
the daunting image of Roger
Clemens with the ball in his
hands, gave up hits and runs
as grudgingly as Scrooge
gave up nickels. At seasons
end, Proctors amazing 0.66
earned-run-average could
only be viewed through a
microscope. He rang up 127
strikeouts in the course of
the campaign and allowed
just 19 walks.
Proctor, a three-time All-
Conference linebacker for
the Chiefs on the gridiron
and an All-Conference point
guard in basketball, deliv-
ered with the bat in his
hands also. He led the Chiefs
in home runs and was espe-
cially tough in clutch situa-
tions. His bases-loaded dou-
ble in the Div. 2 regional
semifinal game with
Gladwin helped break things
open in what turned out to
be a 4-0 triumph. Proctor
also went the distance on
the hill for the Chiefs in that
one.
Proctor was chosen as the
Straits Area Conference
Player of the Year, an honor
he also won following his
sophomore season. He was-
nt eligible for the award last
year as he had to sit out the
entire campaign with a knee
injury. But the determined
young man came back with
resilience and a fiery com-
petitiveness that showed in
his numbers and in his
teams success. Not only did
Proctor earn the Top Choice
Player of the Year honors
and SAC Player of the Year
honors along with All-
District and All-Region
recognition, but he also
earned a scholarship. He will
be continuing his career on
the diamond at Muskegon
Community College, where
he was recruited to play
third base but could very
well end up serving smoke
from the rubber.
Proctor is the first player
from Cheboygan to earn
Player of the Year honors.
Past winners include Rich
Schreiber of Grayling (2008),
Greg Blanco of Mancelona
(2009), Jensen Aubry of
Grayling (2010), Taylor Borst
of Mancelona (2011) and
Craig Conway of Mancelona
(2012).
Swiderek, a first-team All-
Conference performer along
with Proctor and an All-
District and All-Region play-
er, batted a team-high .340
this season for the Chiefs
and led the team in several
categories, recording 35 hits
and 19 steals. He was also
the teams No. 2 pitcher.
Payne, a four-year varsity
starter for Hall of Fame J-L
coach Rick Guild, is the only
player from the area to earn
first-team All-State honors
this season. He batted .484
and knocked in a team-high
32 runs for a very young
Cardinal team that posted a
respectable 18-9 record.

GAYLORD The Gaylord
girls soccer team of coach
Sean Byram posted a win-
ning record this season in
spite of an extremely tough
schedule and one of the chief
reasons was the sensationally
stingy play of Blue Devil goal-
keeper Alex Simmons.
The senior was rewarded
recently with a terrific honor,
being named to the Division
2 All-State team for the sec-
ond year in a row by the
Michigan High School Soccer
Coaches Association. Alex
earned second-team recog-
nition after achieving honor-
able mention a year ago.
Alex helped Gaylord post a
solid 7-3-2 record in the
rugged Big North this season
and an 8-6-3 overall record
against very tough competi-
tion. The Blue Devils permit-
ted a meager 1.35 goals per
game, thanks in large part to
the steady play of Alex in the
nets along with fellow goalie
Megan Lamb and the swarm-
ing, aggressive defense in
front of her. Junior defensive
stopper Brooke Stier was a
beast all season long and was
effective in limiting oppo-
nents quality shots along
with Lindsey Zaremba,
Darby Fitzhenry and Chelsea
Fox, among others.

GAYLORD The 33rd
anniversary running of the
Mark Mellon Memorial
Triathlon on Saturday drew
another large field of partici-
pants to the Otsego Lake
County Park south of
Gaylord. A field of around
200 competed in the Olympic
Triathlon, the Sprint
Triathlon or the 5K race.
The Olympic triathlon fea-
tured perhaps the tightest
competition ever for the
championship. Ben
McMurray, 26, edged out
Dave Smith, 29, in a thrilling
battle that literally came
right down to the end.
McMurray, after trailing
coming out of the water and
at the end of the bike leg of
the race, finally overtook
Smith in the final stages of
the run and beat him out by a
mere 18 seconds.
McMurray completed the
1-kilometer swim, the 40K
bike and the 10K run in a
strong time of one hour, 50
minutes, 9.9 seconds. Smith
finished in 1:50:27.4.
It was the second year in a
row finishing as runner-up
for Smith, a 2001 St. Mary
graduate now serving as a
health and physical educa-
tion teacher at Mancelona
High School and also as co-
race director with his dad
Dan Smith.
Smith, an All-American
triathlete, was the Mellon
champion for two straight
years in 2010 and 2011 before
losing out last year to former
National Junior Team runner
Aaron Bachman, 24, of
Grosse Pointe. Bachman, like
McMurray, trailed Smith after
the swim and bike portions
of the race and passed him
during the final stages of the
run.
Smith trimmed a full
minute off his time from last
year but McMurray, a top-
class triathlete in his own
right, managed to close out
strong and gain the hard-
earned victory with the
thrilling finish.
Sam Dannenbring, 25,
came in third overall in
1:54:08.5 with 31-year-old
Jeff Vandusen (2:02:57.9)
fourth and Trevor Darnell, 39,
in fifth (2:07:14.5). It is the
second year in a row that
Darnell has earned a top-10
finish. He came in ninth a
year ago in 2:10:29.8. Darnell
trimmed three minutes off
his 2012 time to claim fifth
this year.
Cadia Hofmann, 29, was
the female overall champion
of 2013 with her seventh-
place time of 2:10:43.7.
Another female triathlete, 22-
year-old Kate Vann, was also
a top-10 finisher, taking
ninth overall in 2:11:24.2.
The Sprint Triathlon fea-
tured a 500-meter swim, a
20K bike and a 5K run.
Aron Mohammadi, 16,
crossed the finish line first
with an excellent time of 58
minutes, 24.8 seconds. Mike
McQueen, 37, was runner-up
in 59:12.2 with 39-year-old
Lee Kanitz (1:01:42.2) taking
third. Jack Hervela, 14, was
fourth in 1:04:59.0 with 49-
year-old Scout Hester
(1:05:34.1) in fifth.
The overall female cham-
pion this year was 18-year-
old Marissa Lobert of Sault
Ste. Marie, Ontario. She came
in sixth place overall in
1:06:55.3. She unseated two-
time defending champion
Kallisse Dent, 17, of Midland,
who came in eighth in
1:08:08.7.
Dave Smiths younger
brother Mike, 24, was sev-
enth in the Sprint in 1:07:40.5
with Stephen Orsini, 40, in
ninth (1:08:47.1) and
Brandon Fisk, 30, in tenth
(1:09:03.6).
In the Olympic relay, the
team of Matthew Smock
(swim and bike) and Jeanne
McLeod (run) completed the
course in a winning time of
1:25:04.3.
In the Sprint relay, the
threesome of Rhonda
Howard (swim), Mandy
Labarge (bike) and Brittany
Beyers (run) teamed up for a
winning time of 2:37:03.6.
In the 5K race, it was 16-
year-old Carter Lobert of
Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario
crossing the finish line first in
17:50.7 with Jay Janisse, 22, of
East Grand Rapids as runner-
up in 18:02.8 and Mark
Klingel, 16, of Trenton third
in 18:02.8.
Danielle Fredenburg, 20, of
Wayland was the female
champion of 2013, taking
ninth overall in 23:14.9.
Bobby Klemmer, 35, of
South Lyon (19:36.8) was
fourth in the 5K followed by
Lonnie Peiffer, 41 of Parma
(19:59.4) in fifth. Young Mitch
Wilson, 13, claimed sixth in
20:44.5 with Judd Videto, 39,
of Jerome in seventh
(21:45.9) and Michael Fisher,
22, of Roseville (22:17.1) in
eighth. Kurt Dingman, 54, of
Mancelona was tenth in the
5K in 24:11.4.
The top three finishers in
the Olympic Triathlon
received $300, $200 and $100
in prize money.
The Mark Mellon Triathlon
was started by Dr. Dennis
and Judy Mellon in honor of
their son Mark, who died in a
motorcycle accident at the
age of 16.

LANSING Summer means
more and more Michigan resi-
dents and visitors are in the
outdoors enjoying the state's
abundant natural resources,
and one of the more popular
activities is off-road vehicle
(ORV) riding. Conservation
officers with the Michigan
Department of Natural
Resources are reminding ORV
enthusiasts to ride safely and
legally this summer.
"With the holiday weekend
approaching, we know more
ORV riders will be out enjoying
Michigan's designated trail sys-
tem," said Lt. Andrew Turner,
who leads the DNR's recreation
safety program. "We want all
riders to have a fun and safe
experience, and that is why we
want to remind them of some
important safety information."
Lt. Turner offered the follow-
ing tips and guidelines for ORV
riders:
* As with any vehicle, do not
drink and drive.
* Know your ORV - study
your owner's manual and
become familiar with your
vehicle's features. Know where
they are located without having
to look at them.
* Wear a helmet. While
Michigan law recently changed
to give motorcycle riders the
option not to wear a helmet,
the law does not apply to ORV
riders. Also wear eye protec-
tion, such as goggles, or have a
face shield on your helmet.
* Wear gloves and other
proper clothing, including
boots, long pants and long-
sleeved shirts.
* Only have a passenger ride
with you if your ORV is
designed to accommodate a
passenger.
* Do not operate your vehicle
at excessive speeds.
* Do a pre-ride check of your
vehicle to make sure it is in
proper working order. Pay close
attention to the tires, making
sure they aren't low and don't
have a leak. Low tire pressure
can cause handling issues for
your ORV.
* Know your trail - study the
map for where you are riding
and become familiar with
where the sharp curves are
located.
* Know where you're riding -
before heading out, make sure
you know whether or not the
county you're riding in allows
ORV use on county roads. Do
not mistake state forest roads
for county roads. Contact the
county clerk's office where you
want to ride and request a plat
book that shows county roads
for each township. The DNR
also keeps updated ORV maps
on its website at www.michi-
gan.gov/orvtrails.
ORVs are primarily designed
for off-road use. Driving on
paved surfaces is hazardous
because of handling issues.
Riding on paved roads is the
leading cause of ORV-related
fatalities.
For a complete overview of
ORV rules and regulations in
Michigan, go to the Michigan
ORV Handbook online at
www.offroad-ed.com. While
out riding, those who
encounter anyone violating
land use rules for ORVs are
asked to call the DNR's Report
All Poaching law enforcement
line at 800-292-7800.

By Mike Dunn
GRAYLING There will be
another very strong field for
the annual AuSable River
Canoe Marathon this year. As
of July 1, there were 73 two-
person teams entered to par-
ticipate in the 2013
marathon, which is billed as
the longest, richest non-stop
canoe race in North America
and the worlds toughest
spectator race.
Last year, there were 72
teams in the field and 57
crossed the finish line of the
grueling two-day, 120-mile
canoe race that extends
along the Au Sable from
Grayling to Oscoda.
The 2013 race kicks off on
Saturday, July 27, at 9 p.m.
with the traditional LeMans-
style start at the Old AuSable
Canoe Livery. The racing
duos paddle their canoes all
night along the winding con-
tours of the AuSable River
with the top teams finishing
in Oscoda around noon on
Sunday.
Race organizers have again
added an extra day of time
trials, extending from
Wednesday through Friday,
July 24-26, at Penrods Canoe
Livery. The time trials are
used to determine starting
positions, an important fac-
tor for those who would legit-
imately challenge for the
2013 title.
Six-time winners and five-
time defending champs
Andrew Triebold and Steve
LaJoie were not entered in
the field as of July 1, though
there is still plenty of time for
them to enter. Triebold and
LaJoie won the race last year
in 14 hours, 42 minutes, 43
seconds, almost identical to
their winning time from the
previous year. Triebold, 37, of
Grayling and LaJoie, 37, of
Mirabel, Quebec paddled to
the finish 16 minutes ahead
of the tandem of Josh
Sheldon and Ryan Halstead
of Grayling, who were run-
ners-up in 14:58:36. The
team of race veterans Steve
Corlew and Bill Torongo were
close behind in third
(15:05:23).
One of the strong con-
tenders for the 2013 title
looks to be the team of
Halstead, 26, and Mathieu St.
Pierre, 25, of Shawnigan,
Quebec. Halstead is compet-
ing in his 11th marathon race
and has been runner-up
three times. This is the sec-
ond marathon for St. Pierre,
who came in seventh last
year as a rookie with partner
Samuel Frigon, who was also
in his first year.
Another strong contender
looks to be the team of
Sheldon, 32, and fellow race
veteran Matt Strieb, 49, of
Grayling. This is Sheldons
ninth marathon and Striebs
11th and both have had high
finishes in the past. Sheldon
was runner-up with Halstead
last year and Strieb came in
fifth with partner Matt
Meersman.
Michael Schlimmer, 26, of
Cortland, N.Y. joined with
Frigon, 17, of St. Boniface,
Quebec to form another
strong team for the 2013
field. Another strong tandem
looks to be Colin Hunter, 32,
of Grayling and Jason
Hatfield, 35, of Grayling who
have a combined 26 years of
racing experience and
numerous top-10 finishes to
their credit.
A strong contender for the
AuSable womens crown
looks to be the strong tan-
dem of 22-year-old Hailey
McMahon of Grayling and
Rebecca Barton, 23, of
Homer. This is Haileys sec-
ond straight year competing
in the marathon and
Rebeccas fourth.
The third annual Dash for
Cash is set for Tuesday, July
23, in Oscoda. Teams will be
competing for a $5,000 prize
pool on that day in a bracket
style, single-elimination
event.
Marathon program books
and merchandise are ready
for this years event and avail-
able in a downtown store-
front as well as at the
marathon office located in
the Grayling Mini Mall.

LANSING The Department
of Natural Resources reminds
hunters that applications for
fall turkey hunting licenses are
on sale from now through Aug.
1.
A total of 51,850 licenses are
available; 5,150 general licens-
es that may be used on public
or private land and 46,700
licenses for private land only.
Eleven wild turkey manage-
ment units, totaling 44,943
square miles, are open to fall
turkey hunting during the
Sept. 15 - Nov. 14 season,
including most of the southern
Lower Peninsula, Beaver
Island, five counties in the
northern Lower Peninsula and
the entire Upper Peninsula.
"We are in the first year of a
three-year period of stabilized
regulations that were devel-
oped by working with turkey
hunting groups," explained Al
Stewart, the DNR's upland
game bird specialist.
"Regulations are generally sim-
ilar to last year with the only
change being the re-opening of
turkey management units J, T
and WA."
Hunters may apply for a
turkey hunting license at any
authorized license agent, at
DNR Operations Service
Centers or online at
www.michigan.gov/huntdraw-
ings. The application fee is $4.
Drawing results will be posted
online beginning Aug. 15.
If any licenses remain after
the drawing, unsuccessful
applicants may purchase one
leftover license at any license
agent or online for a one-week
period beginning Aug. 19 at 10
a.m. (EDT). Any licenses that
remain as of Aug. 26 at 10 a.m.
(EDT) will be available for pur-
chase over the counter by any
hunter. The licenses will be
sold until the quotas are met.
Hunters have an additional
opportunity to get a turkey
license by applying for the
2014 Pure Michigan Hunt
drawing. Each application is
$4, and hunters may apply as
many times as they like. Three
lucky winners will receive a
hunt package that includes an
elk, bear turkey, and antlerless
deer license. For more infor-
mation, go to
www.michigan.gov/puremichi
ganhunt. Season dates and
regulations have not yet been
established for the 2014 hunt-
ing seasons

The 2014 Ford F-150 Tremor
is the first-ever EcoBoost-
powered sport truck that
addresses the needs of street
truck enthusiasts looking for
high-performance V8 power
with V6 fuel economy. The
short-wheelbase, regular-cab
Tremor goes on sale this fall
delivering distinctive looks
and performance. The all-new
truck couples the style of the
FX Appearance Package with
an EcoBoost engine and a
launch-optimized 4.10 rear
axle the shortest final drive
ratio offered in an EcoBoost F-
150 helping provide cus-
tomers with fast acceleration.
Tremor signals its sport truck capabilities with a cus-
tom-inspired FX Appearance Package featuring stealthy,
flat-black accents that include unique 20-inch flat-black
wheels, stylized bodyside graphics and black badges with
red lettering.
Tremor is the only regular-cab F-150 offering a flow-
through center console and bucket seats. Interior touch-
es include black leather seating surfaces with red piping,
brushed-metal accents and a red-stitched steering
wheel. Alcantara seat inserts add texture and style as
well.
The new Tremor gives F-150 customers yet another
option to drive a highly capable, distinctive performance
truck with features typically found only in the aftermar-
ket, said Brian Bell, F-150 product marketing manager.
Plus, the Built Ford Tough EcoBoost engine is available
for the first time in a short-wheelbase F-150.
F-150 Tremor is powered exclusively by Fords ground-
breaking 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine, which features:
365 horsepower at 5,000 rpm on regular fuel
420 lb.-ft. of torque at 2,500 rpm
Twin independent variable camshaft timing for
improved performance and fuel economy
Up to 90 percent peak torque available from 1,700 rpm
to 5,000 rpm
An electronic locking rear differential thats standard
for both two- and four-wheel-drive versions helps deliver
the power to the pavement by improving traction during
takeoff.
Connectivity comes standard on F-150 Tremor with
MyFord Touch powered by SYNC. Designers have
optimized the physical interface for MyFord Touch to
accommodate truck users who may be wearing work
gloves by providing easy access to climate controls and
audio presets on the center stack.

Real Estate
Do you need
Title
Insurance
Compliments of Ed Wohlfiel
During the real estate
transaction (especially if
you're a first-time buyer),
you're hit with so many
foreign terms, fees and requirements your
head spins. One of those strange and unfa-
miliar costs is title insurance. In most cases,
borrowers have no optioneither you get
title insurance (among other requirements)
or you don't get a loan.
The lender says you need it, you want the
loan to go though, so you buy title insur-
ance. Great. So what is title insurance?
When you buy a home you want to make
sure that the people selling it actually have
full and legal title. The party who conducts
closing will check this out by going down to
the local property records office to research
the history of ownership.
Butand here's the tricky partthose
records down at the property office may be
official, but they may also be wrong. It's also
possible that the person who does the title
search can make a mistake and also that
important information may simply not be
recorded.
For instance, maybe a bill against the
property was not recorded or some taxes
were not been paid. Or, suppose that 40
years ago the property you want to purchase
was owned by Smith. Let's also imagine that
Smith was a bigamist with an extra spouse.
Will this matter show up on the local prop-
erty records? Not likely. Does the additional
Smith spouse have an ownership claim
against the property? That may only be clear
after a lot of legal wranglingand if you
lose, you could lose the house.
There may be other odd and bizarre
claims as well. Was an owner an alcoholic?
Insane? A drug user? Is there a contractor
with a claim against the property? Such
issues can "cloud" titles and neither lenders
nor owners want clouds.
One form of title insurance, "lenders" cov-
erage, is designed to protect (who else?) your
lender in case of title problems. "Lenders"
coverage is required and generally provides
protection up to the original mortgage
amountif you buy a home for $300,000
and get a $250,000 mortgage, then $250,000
is as much coverage as you can get with a
lender's policy. If there's a claim, the title
insurer will fight on your behalf and if
there's a claim the policy will pay off the
loan if necessary. This is good news for you
because you won't owe the lender a dime if
you lose in court.
But there are also some options.
For instance, you can also get "owners"
coverage. This will protect your equitythat
$50,000 in the example above not covered by
the lender's policy. And you can often get an
"inflation rider" with an owner's policyas
the value of your home goes up, so does the
value of your title coverage.
While title insurance is required by virtu-
ally all lenders, there is one big exception:
Loans made in Iowa. In Iowa, the state says
that attorneys and others who do title work
must participate in a title guarantee pro-
gram. If there's a title error, the state fund
provides coverage.
