Parallel Resonance
1. (C-5-P.29) Given the circuit shown in Fig. 1 (a) What are the values of XL that will produce resonance? (b) Find the magnitude of the maximum impedance obtainable with this circuit. Assume that the frequency is held xed.

Figure 1: See Problem 1 (c) If RL is changed to 30 (RC remaining the same) and L and C are made 9 mH and 10F , respectively, what is the impedance looking into the circuit at 100 Hz and 10000 Hz? (d) At what frequency will the circuit as designed in part (c) be in resonance? 2. (C-5-P.31)An impedance Z1 = 8 j 5 is in parallel with an impedance Z2 = 3 + j 7. Find the resultant impedance of the combination. What is the overall power factor? 3. (C-5-P.32)If 100 volts are impressed on the parallel impedances of Problem 2, nd I1 , I2 , and the resultant current. Draw the vector diagram of the circuit, showing each current, and the voltage drop across each parameter. 4. (C-5-P.33) An impedance load consisting of 12 resistance and 16 inductive reactance is connected across a 60 Hz, 100 volt source. Find the capacitance of a capacitor which may be paralleled with this load to bring the power factor to 1. Assume negligible resistance for the capacitor. 5. (C-5-P.35)Find the value of pure resistance which would be required in parallel with the impedance load of Problem 4 to bring the resultant power factor to 0.8. 6. (C-5-P.43) Find C to produce resonance in Fig. 2. How much power is dissipated in Rc at resonance? 1

Figure 2: See Problem 6,7, and 8 7. (C-5-P.44) Find the value of C in Fig. 2 which will yield maximum impedance for the whole circuit. 8. (C-5-P.45) What minimum value of Rc in Fig. 2 would prevent the possibility of attaining resonance by varying C? 9. (C-5-P.47) Refer to Fig. 3 (a) Draw a to-scale vector diagram of V, IC and IRL for XL = 0. (b) On the above diagram draw the loci of IRL and I for XL variable from 0 to

Figure 3: See Problem 9 (c) Determine the values of XL which will produce unity power factor resonance either graphically or analytically. (d) Determine the minimum value of I either graphically or analytically, and nd the value of XL which produces this minimum value of I. 10. (C-5-P.49) (a) If L = 0.050H , C = 200F , and RL = RC = 1.0, nd the resonant frequency of the parallel branches shown in 4. 2

Figure 4: See Problem 10 (b) If RL = 20, L = 0.050H , C = 100F , nd the value of RC which will yield parallel resonance of the two branches at a frequency of 45 Hz. (c) If C = 100F , RL = 20, and RC = 20, nd the value of L that will place the branches in parallel resonance irrespective of frequency. Prepared by S.M.
