INTRODUCTION Traffic accidents have been taking thousands of lives each year, outnumbering any deadly diseases or natural

disasters. tudies sho! that about 60% road!ay collisions could be avoided if the o"erator of the vehicle !as "rovided !arning at least one#half second "rior to a collision. $uman drivers suffer from "erce"tion limitations on road!ay emergency events, resulting in large delay in "ro"agating emergency!arnings. This "ro%ect is to avoid the collision bet!een vehicles by reducing the s"eed automatically !hen the vehicle faces any obstacle&another vehicle',thus the accidents can be avoided. It is based on IR sensor circuits, IR transmitter and reciever, and dc# motors interfaced to microcontroller !ith a mechanical arrangement into it !hich includes a model of mechanically designed vehicle. The "ro%ect is based on microcontroller. $ere the conce"t is to avoid collision of vehicles, thereby to avoid the accidents bet!een them on road!ays. The vehicle !ill be moving arbitrarily and if it comes near to some obstacle&another vehicle' then automatically the vehicle should slo! do!n and thus avoids the collision. If any vehicle is at close "ro(imity !ith an obstacle)another vehicle then the vehicle should com"letely sto". *or detecting the obstacles)another vehicle, IR sensors !ill be used and a "re#"rogrammed microcontroller for slo!ing do!n the vehicle. In the "resent "ro%ect, t!o model vehicles are used to demonstrate the a""lication.

The IR .,D array&IR transmitter' is controlled by a 333 timer o"erated at a "articular fre4uency. T O/ array&IR reciever' !ill receive the signals from IR led array connected in other vehicle !hen it comes in the IR range and sends it to the microcontroller.There are t!o dc motors&one for right side and other for the left side' for the mechanical motion of the vehicle. ,ach motor is driven by a motor driver in !hich s"eed control and direction control "rovisions are "rovided from the microcontroller "ins. !itch array is used to "rovide the !ired control so that the user can control the mechanical motion of the vehicle. .CD units are "rovided to dis"lay the s"eed of the vehicle. The above e("lanation is a""lied to both the vehicles. $ere let us take the case of t!o vehicles - and 0 moving one after other. - is in the front !hich is follo!ed by 0 .The IR led array and T O/ array are "laced both in front and back of each vehicle. If - slo!s do!n or 0 s"eeds u" ,!hen IR signals are received then s"eed of 0 !ill be automatically decreased. If vehicle - is sto""ed or 0 faces an obstacle in front of it then s"eed of 0 !ill be reduced and !hen it reaches close "ro(imity, 0 !ill be sto""ed.
