Draw and explain the operation of semi converter feeding a DC series motor with necessary wave forms. Hence explain the speed torque characteristics of the motor. Sketch characteristics of constant torque drive and constant power drive regions. Explain the speed torque characteristics of a separately excited DC motor connected to a three phase fully controlled converter.

What is a dual converter? Explain the principle of operation of a dual converter in circulating current mode. How the same is used for speed control of DC drive? Explain briefly the following methods of breaking of a DC motor drives: (i) Regenerative breaking and (ii) Plugging. Explain the operation of four quadrant chopper fed DC series motor and also draw the current and voltage waveforms for continuous current operation. Explain the principle of speed control of DC motor and show how it can be achieved by a chopper. Explain any one type of AC voltage controller of induction motor. A 3 KW, 400 V, 50Hz, 4-pole, 1370 rpm, Y connected induction motor has the following parameters. , , . Load characteristics are matched with motor such that motor runs at 1370 rpm with full voltage across its terminals. The motor is controlled by terminal voltage control and load torque is proportional to speed. Calculate the motor terminal voltage and current at half the rated speed. Make a comparison between CSI and VSI operations. Show that a variable frequency induction motor drive develops at all frequencies the same torque for a given slip - speed when operating at constant flux. Draw the circuit diagram and explain the operation of rotor resistance control of induction motor of rotor side and also explain their performance and speed torque characteristics. Mention the advantages and disadvantages of the above method of control.
