Fifth Ward 6th Grade Science Syllabus

All great scientists start out by asking great questions and researching to find the answers. 6th grade Scientists will learn about collecting descriptive and experimental data to better understand the world around them. Additionally, 6th grade Scientists will be introduced to a lot of new vocabulary and it is extremely important that we practice using scientific vocabulary every day. Lastly, 6th grade Scientists will need to use Science strategies and show work on every assignment for it to be considered complete. Below you will find some other important information about how to succeed as a 6th grade Scientist in Ms. Matthews class.

What will I learn this year?


This year, Titans will study a broad scope of subjects in Science class, covering many different scientific disciplines and leaving the 6th grade with a better understanding of the world around them!
Our year will be divided into the following units: Unit 1: Chemistry Unit 2: Biology Unit 3: Physics Unit 4: Energy Unit 5: Geology Unit 6: Astronomy

Grading Policy
Titans Science grades will be calculated from the following categories: 70% Assessments: common assessments, unit tests and quizzes 30% Classwork: work done in class or over an extended time at home such as exit tickets, projects, presentations, and lab work

I use your grades to help me know what support you need and you use your grades to determine what material you need to study in order to succeed.

BIG GOALS
ALL Titans will meet their growth goal at the end of each grading cycle. All Titans will read at least three scientific articles each 6 week grading cycle.

Expectations
1) Bring required supplies to class everyday. 2) Be an active listener and participant. 3) Respect others and the learning environment. 4) Keep notebook up to date, including tracker. 5) Come to tutorials if your grade is below 70.

What do I do if Im absent?
Students will #takeaction by making up the work they missed while absent. If absent, you have as much time as you were absent to make up the work. Extra copies of all work will be posted by day in the absent bin in the folder under the clock. Students are expected to complete the work and turn in assignments as appropriate to the teacher. If you have questions about the missed lesson, please ask a responsible classmate or check in with Ms. Matthews.
