Blue Is The Warmest Colour is a beautiful and heartbreaking love story (Picture: Artificial Eye) Its been a fantastic year for film, so good that weve had to criminally miss out some truly amazing movies on this list. Captain Phillips, Filth, The Place Beyond The Pines, The Kings of Summer, Django Unchained, What Maisie Knew, Drinking Buddies, Kill Your Darlings and Don Jon are some that didnt quite make the cut. So, what are your favourites of 2013?
1. Blue Is The Warmest Colour This ravishing three-hour epic perfectly encapsulates the soaring highs and crushing lows of falling in love as it follows a lesbian relationship from start to finish. La Seydoux and Adle Exarchopoulos are astonishing as the two lovers.
2. Gravity
Gravity is what 3D was made for. Sandra Bullock and George Clooney play astronauts stranded in space in Alfonso Cuarns immersive tale of survival but its the dazzling, eye-splintering visuals which will leave you breathless with admiration.
3. Before Midnight Being reunited with Jesse and Cline is like catching up with old friends. Before Midnight shows you what love is really like after marriage, kids and the happy ever after with all its flaws and fights. Its beautifully bittersweet, gloriously funny and achingly real.
4. Aint Them Bodies Saints The dreamy romance of Aint Them Bodies Saints is hypnotic. Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara are captivating as outlaw star-crossed lovers attempting to be reunited. Like 1970s Terrence Malick written by The English Patient author Michael Ondaatje set to Bob Dylans music.
5. Zero Dark Thirty The hunt for Osama bin Laden after 9/11 is turned into a tense, urgent and gripping thriller by Kathryn Bigelow. An ever reliable Jessica Chastain is sensational as the CIA analyst doggedly on his tail.
6. Like Father, Like Son Hirokazu Koreedas drama follows the emotional fallout after two boys, who were swapped at birth, are returned to their families. Its a wonderfully touching and hugely rewarding exploration of what it means to be a father.
7. Frances Ha Actress Greta Gerwig teams up with real-life boyfriend and director Noah Baumbach in this quirky and spirited comedy about struggling to find your place in life in your twenties. A joyous celebration of being young, feeling lost and female friendship.
8. Behind the Candelabra Michael Douglas gives the performance of his career as Liberace in this highly entertaining biopic which captures the pianist in all his flamboyant, sequined glory. If it really is Steven Soderberghs last film, then hes going out on a real high.

9. Blue Jasmine Metro Each semi-decent Woody Allen film seems to invite cries of a return to form but this time its really true. Cate Blanchett is ferociously good as the woman teetering on the brink of a nervous breakdown in this loose update of A Streetcar Named Desire.

10. Jiro Dreams Of Sushi Probably best not to watch David Gelbs documentary on an empty stomach. Beautifully-shot and quietly contemplative, it delves into the life of top sushi chef Jiro Ono to produce a fascinating mediation on work, family and success. 10 2 comments
