    In this document, the quote "In literature, evil often triumphs but never conquers" is discussed in relation to William Shakespeare's Macbeth and Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird. ThroughoutMacbeth,Macbethisdrivenbyaneedtosucceedand,althoughhedoes temporarilysucceed,itleadstohisimminentdemise.WhenMacbethhearsthewitchesprophesies,his ambitiontakesoverhismoraljudgement.Promptedbyhiswife,MacbethkillsDuncan.Inthisinstance, eviltemporarilytriumphsbecause,astheprophecyforetold,Macbethbecomesking.Inorderto maintainhispower,MacbethhasBanquokilled,andevengoesasfarastohaveMacduffsentirefamily slaughtered.InanothermeetingwiththewitchesMacbethisreassuredthathewillbekingforever becauseithasbeensaidthathecannotdiefromamanbornofawoman,and,therefore,heconcludes thathewillkeepthecrown.

    Atthispoint,itappearsthatthroughhisevil,Macbethhasconquered, however,attheendoftheplay,werealizethatthisisuntrue.Intheend,MacduffkilledMacbethdueto aloopholeandMalcolmbecomesking.ThoughforamajorityoftheplayMacbethappearsto triumph,heloseseverythingintheendandisconquered.InToKillaMockingbird,BobEwell,whois motivatedbyignoranceandprejudicerepresentsevil.Onthecontrary,AtticusFinchsymbolizes moralityandintegrity.WhenMayellaEwellaccusesTomRobinson,ablackman,ofrape,heisassumed guiltyduetoprejudice.AtticusistheonlymanwillingtodefendTomincourt.Sinceheisalawyer, AtticusdoesanexcellentjobofdefendingTomandthereisnodoubtthatheisinnocent.Howeverdue

    toracialbigotry,theverdictisthatTomisguiltyonallcharges..Theignorantandprejudiced,havethus farhavetriumphedoverintegrityandhonesty.ThequoteisfurtherportrayedwhenBobEwellattacks Atticuschildren,ScoutandJem,andheiskilledbythetimidBooRadley.Theevilwhichtriumphed previouslyhasnowbeenconquered.ThequoteisalsorelevanttoAtticusasacharacter.Atticusactsas arolemodelandmoralteacherforhischildrenbygivingthemadviceaboutlife.Hewantsthemto realizethatineverypersonthereisbothgoodandevil.Atticuswantshischildrentobelievethatinthe end,thegoodinthisworldoutweightheeviland,intheend,evilwillneverconquer. InbothMacbethandToKillaMockingbird,thereisastrugglebetweenevilandmorality. Throughouttheseworks,evilisoftentemporarilytriumphant,yetneverconquersintheend.Thequote Inliterature,eviloftentriumphsbutneverconquersisprevalentthroughoutthesenovelsandmany others.
